Too shy to wear sunglasses? Anyone else?

I always wanted to wear sunglasses, but also feel like I look stupid in them. Every year I see all kinds of people wearing them, and I just think to myself gosh I wish I could do that. My face is round , and I just feel I’d look stupid in them. Im honestly thinking of buying a good pair this year, and just go for it. Does anyone else feel like this about sunglasses?

I have never looked at a person wearing sunglasses and thought ' blimey, they're the wrong shape for that face'.
Protect your eyes OP.

EmpressSuiko · 20/03/2022 18:01

I feel the same OP but I have a massive nose and i don’t view myself as very pretty so I think I just look odd with them on

Blinky21 · 20/03/2022 18:04

Me too, I'm the same with hats!

MingeofDeath · 20/03/2022 18:07

Mine are virtually welded onto my head. I wear them all the time.

wheelywheelynice · 20/03/2022 18:13

Everyone looks good in sunglasses if they find the right pair. With a round face, you need a square shape, anything else will just emphasise the roundness of your face.

BabyofMine · 20/03/2022 18:13

My parents have recently had cataracts surgery after struggling for years with terrible eyesight. Whilst it’s enormously improved now after the surgeries, they both say they really wish they had worn sunglasses through their life to prevent it. Proper sunglasses that block UVA and UVB light can greatly prevent cataracts and other eye problems. They’re not just a fashion item, they are important in the same way suncream is.

Fernandina · 20/03/2022 18:18

My local TK Maxx had about 300 pairs of sunglasses last time I was in about a week ago. Loads of different styles.

Blossomtoes · 20/03/2022 18:20

Just in case anyone’s worried about cataracts - I had both mine done three years ago after a life time of wearing sunglasses all year round. I suppose I might have got them earlier if I hadn’t worn them but sunglasses certainly didn’t prevent them.

I've always felt like this about something or other throughout my life. I'm late 40s now and have realised that literally no one cares what I'm wearing or look like, and if they do, they can't be that nice a person. Most people just think about what they look like themselves. I ask myself if I ever really have strong thoughts about what others look like - no, I don't remember what people wear on the whole, unless they look spectacular. I use this advice for my daughters when they worry what they look like. I hope this helps! Life's too short. Enjoy whatever you want xx
DinosaurDuvet · 20/03/2022 18:41

Omg I love mine but I get what you mean, at the start I felt self conscious too. But I actually now feel I can hide away behind them. They also serve a practical purpose for me, I have very light sensitive eyes

HappyDays40 · 20/03/2022 18:55

Nobody is interested in if you are wearing sunglasses or not....really they aren't.

Summerfun54321 · 20/03/2022 18:58

I couldn’t give 2 shits if someone walked down the street with a pineapple on their head. Honestly no one cares about how your sunglasses look.

Fluffmum · 20/03/2022 19:10

Love mine wear them daily

BooneyBeautiful · 20/03/2022 19:14

Please do wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. They must offer 100% UVA and UVB protection. I was diagnosed with Age-related Macular Degeneration (dry) some years ago and I really wish I had worn sunglasses when I was younger, but nobody warned me of the dangers. Even when I did used to wear a pair, they were always cheap and cheerful ones which offered no real protection. Now I wear them as soon as the sun comes out, even during the winter.

PenelopeProsser · 20/03/2022 19:17

I'm infamous for being grumpy without mine on a sunny day. To the extent that my sister (who is much more organised than me) often checks in advance that I have them in my bag or packs a spare pair!

Just buy some you like. I wear ridiculously uncool slightly wrap around sports ones as they protect my eyes much better than "fashion" ones.

dizzy125 · 20/03/2022 19:21

Yep. Used to feel shy about lots of things...wearing sunglasses, carrying an umbrella, felt self conscious about taking up any space in the world whatsoever. I outgrew it thankfully, I hope you do too. Wear anything that makes you feel good, most people won't notice or care.

justandfair · 20/03/2022 19:29

That’s me OP!! Happy someone like me out there. And thank you so much for posting! Everyone reply is encouraging so thank you for that!
It’s just that I get too self aware and conscious of myself which I think is a trait lacking in non shy people !

Mandyjack · 20/03/2022 19:42

Not at all, it's just getting a style that suits your face. Go somewhere like Primark they are really cheap

StoneofDestiny · 20/03/2022 19:46

I wear them to protect my ears

Wow - that's a new one

Londoncallingtothefarawaytowns · 20/03/2022 19:57

Omg i wear sunglasses all year round ! How are you not sneezing and squinting all summer?

Get one of those apps where you try on the frames and see what your friends think- they wonh habe you pick a pair that dont suit you.
Or go into primark and try on all the styles

I have quite a round face and the styles i dont really suit are cat, winged rounded square ones( oversized) or browline.

Avaitor, wayfarer , round , small , retro all look great.

CaMePlaitPas · 20/03/2022 20:06

I love sunglasses, although I do feel a bit self conscious, in a "who does she think she is?!" type way. Wearing them protects your eyes from UV though which is obviously a good thing.

evilharpy · 20/03/2022 20:09

Quite the opposite - I wear them every single day as my eyes are so shit in daylight (even when it's not that bright). The very odd time I go out without them I feel like I'm missing an arm.

TK Maxx is definitely your friend for trying on a million pairs, but also if you're going to be in an airport any time soon, there are always some bargains to be had in the duty free.

SchoolNightWine · 20/03/2022 20:10

@Sunshineandrainbow

Go for it. Go to boots and take you time to try them on and treat yourself.
Agree - Boots had a brilliant selection when I bought mine last year, and they're really helpful at finding the right ones to suit your face.
PearlyShamps · 20/03/2022 20:13

I totally get this, I feel this way about wearing hats.

In truth I'm sure nobody would even notice if you wore sunglasses, and I wore a hat.

Tell you what... I will if you will!!
