To ask why people use spray deodorants

When roll ons and sticks are more effective, more economical (all the product goes where it is meant to rather than half of it going into the air around you) less polluting and less irritating to the lungs? Seems like a no brainer to me.

Sprays are gross. I hope my children don’t want to use them when they become teens. Thankfully, I managed to convince dh to stop using sprays. The smell goes everywhere.

Don’t get me started on people who top up their deodorant by using sprays in an open plan office.

RobertaFirmino · 17/03/2022 22:07

@Jeannie88

Roll on creams like Dove are gorgeous, absorb and smell lovely! X
Gorgeous? Really?
workwoes123 · 17/03/2022 22:27

A sciencey friend once told me that 80% of a spray can contents is wasted, only 20% actually land on skin and sticks. They are a total waste of money.

Haven’t used one since.

Animum2 · 17/03/2022 22:53

I seem to be allergic to roll on deodorant. I used them handful of times and always had a itchy rash after, so switched to spray and it's been fine ever since

Helloevans3 · 18/03/2022 02:15

Stopped using Roll on when I realised they were virtually none recyclable. Use a spray in a recycled aluminium can.

supperlover · 18/03/2022 07:18

The crystal ones are brilliant and last for ages so environmentally better and more economical. I've never used a spray one even before discovering the crystal ones.

If you are using spray deodorant in a shared changing room at the gym, just know everyone hates it. (Breathing in spray can fumes is very unpleasant)

Sanada · 18/03/2022 08:11

I prefer spray deodorant to stick and roll on. I find it works better, smells nicer and lasts ages. Roll on takes too long to dry and stick is never as effective for me.

SunshineCake1 · 18/03/2022 08:38

[quote Branster]"Which dry instantly? My Sanex doesn't."

This is impressive:

Thank you. I'll look today.

budlea64 · 18/03/2022 09:00

Another reason - sprays are freezing in winter. Used once when I was about 16 and never again.
I never feel sticky with roll-ons, not understanding that.
I hate people using sprays in the changing room at work. I walk in after someone and nearly choke. Selfish behaviour, some of us are asthmatics.

ravenmum · 18/03/2022 10:01

@AWOL66 It's not CFCs that are still polluting the air; it's volatile organic compounds. news.sky.com/story/household-aerosols-now-release-more-harmful-smog-chemicals-than-cars-study-finds-12289966

CounsellorTroi · 18/03/2022 10:11

I assume pump dispenser bottles are ok as the contents are not pressurised, but they still get on your chest.

In any case thanks for the thread as I've been trying to use plastic products less, and this prompted me to check out the latest eco-friendly products again. Have found a couple of new ones at a good price! Will check them out.

HarriR · 18/03/2022 10:40

I used roll on until i got a skin condition, under my arms. Now I use sprays. I don't want it back again. Happy to take any other suggestions though!

jay55 · 18/03/2022 12:11

Roll on for underarm, spray for back and feet when I know ill be using the tube.

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/03/2022 12:14

Because I don't like either. You do you.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/03/2022 12:23

I'm not sure, probably habit.
I buy the roll-on for DD.
I use a tiny blast daily I don't need much I'll happily buy roll-on or stick next time for environmental reasons.

AWOL66 · 18/03/2022 12:45

Oh I didn't know that! Thanks for highlighting it. I will have another look at eco deodrants too!

Thisisnotreallymyname · 18/03/2022 16:38

I needed a new deodorant and,as a result of this post , I bought a stick one, instead of my usual spray 🥰

GeneLovesJezebel · 18/03/2022 16:40

Sometimes my stick one isn’t enough, so I use spray on top.

HelenAnnC · 20/03/2022 08:57

I find that a good couple of spray deodorant squirts double as a very effective bathroom deodorant. Can be very useful e.g when starting out with a new partner!

themosttiptoptopcat · 20/03/2022 09:37

I subscribe to Wild deodorant. It’s a roll on, all natural ingredients. You buy a one off holder and every couple of months I get refills delivered. When the refills are empty they can go in the compost bin.
It works for me, I find it keeps me smelling fresh all day. It can feel a little wet on the underarm when first applied and sometimes leaves white marks but I’m happy to compromise for an environmentally friendly deodorant.
