Neighbours’ leaving-the-house ritual

Next door neighbours have got primary age kids. Every time any family member leaves the house for school, work, activities or whatnot, the remaining members of the household enthusiastically gather in the doorway and perform this lengthy and noisy ritual as if they’re never going to see each other again. They jump up and down and shout BYE!! at the top of their voice, alternating with the person who is leaving, at increasing pitch and volume, for the entire time it takes the person to walk down the street and round the corner (about 30 houses).
The first few times I found it quite endearing, but after two years of being subjected to this several times a day, it’s beginning to really grate. It’s loud, frequent and in your face (long narrow echoey street of tall town houses).
AIB a grumpy old fart or do they sound a bit unhinged?
InFiveMins · 24/02/2022 17:47
God that would drive me mad. Literally every time someone leaves the house they do this?!
ApolloandDaphne · 24/02/2022 17:47
Sounds bonkers but at least they all seem to like each other!
WildPoinsettia · 24/02/2022 17:48
They're nuts. Nothing you can do about it though.
britneyisfree · 24/02/2022 17:48
😂
FionnulaTheCooler · 24/02/2022 17:49
I used to have a neighbour like this, if the leaving person was driving it was accompanied by horn beeping. It was annoying as hell.
ClemDanFango · 24/02/2022 17:50
🤣🤣🤣
MumsMetHer · 24/02/2022 17:50
I seen see why you're fed up with it, but it's also adorable!
TheMissingMango · 24/02/2022 17:50
Get a small bell and every time they do it, sit in the window and ring it until they're finished. Never discuss the bell with them.
warmeduppizza · 24/02/2022 17:51
I know, it’s super cute in a weird way
DinnoWoman · 24/02/2022 17:54
Maybe they love each other very much.
Or they're all high.
SirChenjins · 24/02/2022 17:55
@TheMissingMango
Do this!
You need to match crazy with crazy. Two years of that would drive me demented.
IsItTooHotInHere · 24/02/2022 17:57
Bloody hell, it's OTT
CheeseCakeSunflowers · 24/02/2022 17:58
Stand in your doorway and shout "where you going" everytime.
BSideBaby · 24/02/2022 18:00
Imagine if they did it in reverse when they came home too, starting at the end of the street 🤣
Shainago · 24/02/2022 18:01
Join them next time.
Get out your door, jump up and down and shout BYE at the top of your lungs everytime one of them is about to leave.
Cure crazy with crazy
Rummikub · 24/02/2022 18:02
I was reading this laughing
Read it out to my dd2 - still chuckling.
30 houses seems a lot, maybe 4/5 is acceptable. Very funny and cute and annoying!
Shainago · 24/02/2022 18:02
@CheeseCakeSunflowers
🤣🤣🤣
Satingreenshutters · 24/02/2022 18:04
@TheMissingMango
This made my day.
OnceuponaRainbow18 · 24/02/2022 18:04
Oh god my boys do this to each other… every time
Havers · 24/02/2022 18:04
That would drive me crazy - it's not cute or endearing, it's anti-social.
MrsPnut · 24/02/2022 18:07
It's better than what I do to DH (not all the time admittedly) - After he has left the driveway, I fling open the front door and shout "And don't come back" then slam the front door shut.
I can watch him walking along the street laughing away.
Nidan2Sandan · 24/02/2022 18:13
@MrsPnut
I can watch him walking along the street laughing away.
All my DH/visitors get is
"Hurry up and shut the door, you're letting the cold in"

warmeduppizza · 24/02/2022 18:16
OMG the doing it in reverse thing 😂
Dyrne · 24/02/2022 18:17
That is odd; but I wonder if it’s been triggered by something and then morphed over time into this?
I am compelled to do a lower key thing where I have to see someone off at the front door and wave to them from the door until I can’t see their car any more - for me it comes from a traumatic sudden bereavement and that “I never got to say goodbye” feeling.
WomanStanleyWoman · 24/02/2022 18:17
You need to take it up a notch, OP. Invite your extended family over and, as you prepare to pop out for a packet of fags, get them to perform ‘So Long, Farewell’ from The Sound of Music. That’ll teach em.
