Fucked off with Brexit

Allison453 · 17/02/2022 10:38

I live in Northern Ireland. I have today tried to purchase 3 separate items from companies in the EU and one in the mainland.

They all state they don’t deliver to Northern Ireland because of Brexit

How has this happened where there is a border in the Irish Sea.

I can have parcels delivered to Ireland - no problem. Mainland UK - no problem

Northern Ireland - nope.

We are still part of the UK nothing has changed!!!

I’m so pissed off

I would expect additional charges maybe if the parcel has to be delivered through UK and on to us. I did not expect that years later this would still be an issue

No wonder the Northern Ireland government has collapsed! I fully support the collapse, maybe Westminster will finally take some action, although I doubt it Angry

Fuck you Brexit. Send me my parcel

I'm sorry OP. The people of NI have been totally shafted as a result of Brexit, which is awful given that they voted to remain. It's shit, but Westminster seems quite happy to throw them under the bus.

WindyState · 17/02/2022 10:58

YANBU.

It was always a shit idea voted for by idiots, and surprise surprise it's all going wrong.

Allison453 · 17/02/2022 11:00

It cost an estimated £100 million of tax payers money last time it collapsed and had to be ran by Westminster

All politicians still received full wages over the 3 years of collapse.

I wonder what will happen this time

FumingFredericka · 17/02/2022 11:02

Yeah it is utterly crap and unfair.

It’s a shit show. Though we deliver to Northern Ireland haven’t had any problems and prices have also dropped to pre shitshow levels.

Brexit is the biggest own goal going.

Xiaoxiong · 17/02/2022 11:13

I remember bringing up NI to an ardent Brexiteer I knew back in 2016 and he literally said "oh whatever, they can be part of the ROI" while handwaving away any further discussion. I was absolutely speechless.

MorningStarling · 17/02/2022 11:17

Perhaps the Irish Republic could join a customs union with the UK. This would resolve the border issue entirely. The limited trade between the Republic and mainland EU could be checked at the time.

Alternatively, there could just be a straightforward free trade agreement between the EU and UK, but of course that wouldn't "punish" the UK so can't happen.

No-one is punishing the UK.

The UK chose to leave the EU.
This is the result.

me to

the response to me from the said adrent Brexiter was ' I don't give a shit about Northern Ireland '

.... sums up the attitude of many!

The UK doesn't want a free trade agreement with the EU though. I don't think the ROI can join a customs union with the UK, that's kind of the point of the EU. What do you mean by "limited" trade?

Why on earth would Ireland want to do that? They have not chosen to leave the EU and they are not responsible for the decision that the UK made to leave.

And we had free trade between the EU and the UK, but we chose to opt out of that. We could have stayed in the single market post Brexit but we chose to opt out of that too.

I'm not sure why you think the rest of Europe should bend to accommodate everything on our terms. That's not really how it works.

The UK voted to leave the EU and our elected leaders decided that we needed a hard Brexit. There are consequences to those decisions, and we alone are responsible for those consequences.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 17/02/2022 12:24

@Allison453 I hear ya! I'm in NI too and not only have I had companies completely refusing to deliver here but I've also had sellers contact me on eBay and Vinted wanting more money for postage because we're "out of the way". I'm fed up to the back teeth of our pathetic infighting executive. If they don't want to work then we should stop their pay, they're a bunch of freeloading bigoted shites.

AlexaShutUp · 17/02/2022 12:26

It's actually astonishingly arrogant to suggest that another sovereign nation should abandon its existing trade relationships in order to solve a problem that the UK has singlehandedly created! Unbelievable!

Runforthehills82 · 17/02/2022 12:29

I’m so sorry, it is so unbelievably crap.
It is a shit show on so many levels.
I am from mainland uk but trying to live in and travel Europe at the moment. It’s a nightmare. I’m so angry to have our right to free movement taken away.

As usual, these threads expose the level of ignorance in the UK about Ireland.
Ireland can't create a custom's union with the UK while part of the EU. And Ireland has zero interest in leaving the EU.
The "limited" trade between Ireland and the rest of the EU is worth far more than trade to the UK. In fact it has grown by about 40% since Brexit. Trade to the UK is worth an awful lot less than you think.
The EU is not punishing the UK. It is enforcing the rules between it and third countries that always existed. Rules that the UK helped to write! But for some reason, not least British exceptionalism, you seem to think that they shouldn't apply to you now.

Are you aware of how ridiculous you sound when you suggest the UK is being punished because the EU now treats it as any other nation that is NOT part of the EU.

The fact that some feel the UK is being punished for something they voted for has made me question my own level of understanding anything anymore.

The stupidity is staggering.

VelvetChairGirl · 17/02/2022 12:55

All the experts said it was a stupid idea but 50% didnt listen and decided to blame immigrants for all the troubles caused by long term tory governments.

stupid is as stupid does.

oh grow up, "punish" the UK by not having a free trade agreement good lord international diplomacy and trade deals are not school yard politics no matter how much our voted for representatives are permanently stuck in the school yard.

watching Ukip MEPs consistently and repeatedly embarrass themselves and the nation in the EU parliament was so cringeworthy, I am surprised anyone wants to have any trade with us after the absolute shitshow of xenophobia/racism, lies, stupidity and arrogant imperialistic bollocks we have been projecting for the last 10ish years.

I have never felt so ashamed to be British, we are a utter laughing stock a banana republic with no bananas unless you count the ruling classes whom all appear to be completely insane.

Well that's Brexit in a nutshell isn't it.

There was an episode of a political podcast a couple of years ago where an ex-Brexiter explicitly said that no-one in the Eurosceptic movement even thought about Ireland, in the whole 30-odd years they'd been banging their drum.

They're idiots.

wasnt it the case that the Tories only managed to get a majority by getting the support of the DUP?

so its the DUP and Tories to blame for all this shit. and the Lib Dems lets not forget them propping up cameron so he could start this shitfest in the first place.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 17/02/2022 13:18
