Fucked off with Brexit

Allison453 · 17/02/2022 10:38

I live in Northern Ireland. I have today tried to purchase 3 separate items from companies in the EU and one in the mainland.

They all state they don’t deliver to Northern Ireland because of Brexit

How has this happened where there is a border in the Irish Sea.

I can have parcels delivered to Ireland - no problem. Mainland UK - no problem

Northern Ireland - nope.

We are still part of the UK nothing has changed!!!

I’m so pissed off

I would expect additional charges maybe if the parcel has to be delivered through UK and on to us. I did not expect that years later this would still be an issue

No wonder the Northern Ireland government has collapsed! I fully support the collapse, maybe Westminster will finally take some action, although I doubt it Angry

Fuck you Brexit. Send me my parcel

and the Lib Dems lets not forget them propping up cameron so he could start this shitfest in the first place.

The referendum was in the Tories' 2015 manifesto, not in their 2010 manifesto. It was introduced by a Conservative-only government - absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the Lib Dems propping up Cameron.

MindyStClaire · 17/02/2022 15:04

@MorningStarling

Perhaps the Irish Republic could join a customs union with the UK. This would resolve the border issue entirely. The limited trade between the Republic and mainland EU could be checked at the time.

Alternatively, there could just be a straightforward free trade agreement between the EU and UK, but of course that wouldn't "punish" the UK so can't happen.

Is it 2016 again? Feeling quite nostalgic all of a sudden, haven't heard this bullshit for a while.

Maybe I'll go talk about how a few celebs dying makes it a terrible year, and go cough freely in a supermarket without a shred of worry.

Good times, good times.

Chasingaftermidnight · 17/02/2022 15:08

The fact that some feel the UK is being punished for something they voted for has made me question my own level of understanding anything anymore.

Lol. Don’t let it make you question yourself. There’s no making sense of stupid.

Some Brexiteers genuinely thought that the EU would be willing to tear up its own rules of membership (rules the UK helped write) and offer us a full free trade deal without us having to accept freedom of movement.

I know.

Perhaps they could, but why should they? Plenty of people in the UK voted for this mess. It's not for Ireland to make any concessions to make it easier for us.

It's not about "punishing" the UK. Those who voted to leave, voted to leave the EU without any solid assurances on what leave would look like. That's on them.

UserWithNoUserName · 17/02/2022 15:16

@AlexaShutUp

It's actually astonishingly arrogant to suggest that another sovereign nation should abandon its existing trade relationships in order to solve a problem that the UK has singlehandedly created! Unbelievable!
Someone on my facebook suggested that the problem could be solved if the Republic of Ireland just became part of the UK.... I despair.

FFS, what is wrong with these people?

septumring99 · 17/02/2022 15:20

I feel you OP- I have the same problem these days in the Channel Islands. There's only so many things I can have sent to family on the mainland before it starts getting ridiculous, any company smaller than Amazon seems to have been hit with this. We didn't even get a vote in Brexit! I feel so bad for NI because many people pointed out the potential problems and everyone seemed to ignore it! Everyone outside of the mainland seems to have been completely shafted.

PleasantBirthday · 17/02/2022 15:26

Please tell me they've worked out how that's going to happen.

All4Love · 17/02/2022 15:27

Can you get something delivered from EU to ROI to NI

I vaguely remember some Irish friends using an NI forwarding address to have things delivers to ROI. Perhaps something like that but in reverse?

TheMerrickBoy · 17/02/2022 15:29

If the obvious and logical outcomes of Brexit look like 'punishment' maybe that's because it was a stupid idea and a stupid thing to vote for.

Please tell me they haven't thought it through, because if they've got as far as actually planning another round of plantations in Ireland... well, it took hundreds of years to get rid last time, is all.
balalake · 17/02/2022 15:40

I have never supported the cause of Ulster Unionism. However I think the government headed by Boris Johnson has sold them down the river. A Brexit deal could have been done without this.

PleasantBirthday · 17/02/2022 15:40

My plan is to point and laugh, because there's no plausible way they could achieve it, but I'd like to hear more about the thought process.

if the lib dems hadnt propped them up in 2010 and shafted all the students they wouldnt have had such a manifesto, we could have had a labour/someone coalition.

coalition would have only been needed because of all the brainless prats and pillocks who blamed labour for a global recession and stupidly bought into tory austerity lies, as I said before stupid is as stupid does and the only thing the Tories/Right wing are good at is lying and passing the buck, they are utter professionals at that and I am so ugly that so many in this country are that bloody gullible.

thats because they are stuck in little Britain mentality, the war!, we have an empire you know, rule britainia!

its laughable fuck knows where they get it from, man do they huff and puff if I ever talk about my grandfather he won a medal in ww2 for catching a SS officer and was a bugle boy in ww1, he was disgusted by the British establishment, he would have got on well with Harry Patch, the way these Brexiteer types bellow about WW2 makes me think they never actually knew/spoke too anyone/family members involved at the sharp end of it, its all bollocks they spout from watching too many films like Dam Busters which is utter drivel and has nothing to do with reality, my other grandfather had involvement with that operation and firestorm etc, he did recon work over Germany, taking pictures before and after, the raids were horrific, he wasn't proud of it.

hanahsaunt · 17/02/2022 16:06

My Northern Irish parents in law voted for Brexit (and applied for their Irish passports the next day so that they could continue to enjoy their European holidays without issue). They are cross with what is happening because "this is not the Brexit we voted for" ... They couldn't articulate what Brexit they thought they were voting for ... they claim no one told them there would be problems despite being intelligent educated people. They do have The Daily Telegraph delivered daily and clearly didn't read or listen beyond that propaganda. They are unrepentant. We are livid. I find their passport thing virtually unforgiveable - when I challenged them on that they said "but we are entitled". Yes, yes you are. So so angry.

IpanemaPeaHen · 17/02/2022 16:08

YANBU and I think the penny is finally dropping for most. I don’t even see the ‘just believe in Brexit’ threads anymore.

There are far too many mental hurdles there I'm afraid. You're blaming everyone except the Tories and UKIP for a manifesto commitment which was there solely to satisfy right-wing Tories and potential UKIP voters.

interesting my father and sister voted brexit and both read the daily telegraph, no one else in the family did they both have life long conditions that require medical assistance (diabetes and terminal cancer) and both of them cited the bullshit on the bus as the reason why they voted, they thought the NHS would get the EU membership money and that would improve the NHS.
DublinFemale · 17/02/2022 16:12

Ireland had gone from 73% of its trade with UK before we joined EU to 12%.

During that time we have thrived and for a relatively young country in terms of self governance we have come a long way. All of which is down to good relations with the EU.

Why would we give up our independence, our constitutional rights, the right to decide our own destiny, to be ruled by a proven liar who has the power to control our right to even vote on self governance. Not to mention the wonderful racist Home Secretary Pretti Patel. She has made her feelings about Irish citizens very clear.

I don't think the penny will ever drop for a lot of people. Lots of them have probably forgotten about Brexit already, and they probably don't follow the news closely enough to realise how many problems it is causing.

If they stop and think about it for long enough, then they might realise that the sunlit uplands that they were promised haven't yet materialised, but I suspect that most have moved on to blaming the next scapegoat for their misery without the slightest care in the world for all of the chaos that they have caused.

but the point is the Tories wouldnt have had a majority if other bastards hadn't stepped in to help them.

even if they managed to get just enough seats to pass, they still wouldn't have had the control to do what they have without other idiots selling their souls for a piece of shared power, they got propped up for years before johnson.

Along the lines of WHY ON EARTH wouldn't anyone want to be part of Engerland, I suspect.
