Boris - new low

Obviously he's running scared from his own side as well and Labour and the excellent contribution from Ian Blackford - no doubt Dennis Skinner would have done the same if still an MP.

However, there was no need for Johnson to stoop to the level of more lies - this time trying smear Kier Starmer with untrue allegations about Jimmy Savile.

'That doesn't mean the media shouldn't publish any new evidence. Every tiny shred of it should be made public.'

Evidence Confused

3 work colleagues in a room at work. One bottle of something opened, no-one drinking from it but even if they were that would be ok because we know no crimes were committed when the leader of the opposition necked beer at work with others.

I'm sure Pip and Dom have more up their sleeve, but this one is a 0/10 from me. Must try harder.

you keep repeating Kier drinking beer like it’s some sort of bombshell… do you not own a calendar? Can’t you comprehend that different periods of time have different circumstances?

Take your own advice.

@JaniieJones I do not know what kind of work environment you are used to, but in the middle of several national crises does it not seem odd to you that the Prime Minister is photographed next to a chap wearing tinsel and by an open bottle of wine.

I'd much rather have someone in charge who does not seem to need a drink to work, and is sufficiently motivated not to have to have Christmas quizzes.

NETSRIK · 09/02/2022 15:35

@JaniieJones

Bombshell?! We've seen this quiz before. Which is funny because when Pip originally shared a snap from it she said with 'a bottle of bubbly' but at that time when it was first leaked, what a month ago? all that was visible then was hand sanitiser. She's obviously finally, finally, got one with the 'bubbly' in shot. She must be ecstatic.

3 people present though at a remote Christmas quiz. I'm not outraged sorry. Booze is allowed at work, Starmer said.

What will it take for you to take a step back and see all this for what it is and the huge lack of trust in the government this has caused? I'm genuinely interested in what it will be?

Perhaps what Matthew Parris suggests I’m hoping that next week he may cartwheel naked down Whitehall, with a daffodil stuck up his bottom, shouting “Tom Daley is a tank-topped bum-boy and Princess Diana had it coming!” — and afterwards will sit channel-hopping in his bunker, stroking his dog as squirming ministers try to explain what the prime minister actually meant.

StormzyinaTCup · 09/02/2022 15:40

I think the media (not for the first time) and DC are going to overplay their hand soon. We are all now aware that there were parties and it's being rightly investigated. It makes no difference to me whether there are 3 photos or 300 but the drip drip will soon become yawn yawn.

ClaudineClare · 09/02/2022 15:57

Even if Partygate does become yawn yawn (which it won't as we have the results of the met investigation and the full Grey report in the pipeline as well as who knows what from Cummings) another scandal will come along to finish Johnson off.

I agree. It is utterly boring that we have a Prime Minister who can't seem to function without regular drinking and parties.

The sooner he leaves the better.

Trouble is I honestly believe some people would try and defend it. Probably all be Jeremy Corbyn or Kier Starmer's fault as Corbyn once said he liked Daffodils and Starmer once observed someone do something similar to a cartwheel in 1996.

I will step back and see all this for what it is when/if we see photos of actual parties. As I say Dom and Pip may be saving the worst for last so if we do see photos of Johnson partying in a room full of people including invited guests( not work colleagues at work) then yes I'll agree and say that is shit.

So you are happy for the Prime Minister to break the law, if it is only a little bit?

Does that apply to other laws as well?

Say if the Prime Minister only beat up a journalist a little bit, that would be ok?

SueSaid · 09/02/2022 16:19

'So you are happy for the Prime Minister to break the law, if it is only a little bit?'

But jgw refreshments at work were allowed hence KS getting off with nibbles and beer at his works party/workplace break (step 2 out of lockdown, indoor socialising not allowed except for work. Yes I have a calendar thanks to the pp asking)

I'm interested to see if we do have snaps of an actual party. If so it begs the question why the delay, why fanny on with 3 person quizzes and 10min office coffee and cake? It would seem to lessen the impact of further serious reveals tbh.

StormzyinaTCup · 09/02/2022 16:21

The sooner he leaves the better.

Maybe. The burning question then is would it be Rishi? Liz? or maybe Gove and Hunt will have another go? if Johnson goes now then it gives the party plenty of time to balance the ship before the net GE, not sure if that's what people want though.

I am not a Tory, but I want stability for the country. I don't want us to be lurching along with an amoral PM at the helm until 2024.

You must have a great job if your work involves having champagne, crisps and jolly japes on zoom quizzes with colleagues wearing party hats and tinsel. Even more fun I imagine if the rest of the country are told they can't do these things.

If it was fine for these things to be happening, and are clearly such an important part of the Prime Minister's job, one has to wonder why one the photos of one of his many official photographers were not shared with us all at the time, to show us how busy he had been at work.

Good point. It's almost as if this completely totally absolutely fine example of his hard work was in fact a party?

Well, we had takeaway fish and chips in the office in Dec 2020, there were 7 of us and tinsel and wine may have also been involved.

But Rees Mogg told us that a change of leader automatically triggers a general election.

No you wouldn't because you'd add in more caveats, like you have now "including invited guests( not work colleagues at work)"

Nothing will make you criticise BJ, bit like Nadine in that regard i suppose.

StormzyinaTCup · 09/02/2022 18:51

But Rees Mogg told us that a change of leader automatically triggers a general election.

Rees Mogg said any new leader should call a GE to get the country's backing.
It is not one of the criteria that would automatically trigger a GE so I would imagine he is just sending out a warning shot to any Tory dissenters.

Thank you for the patronising explanation - it was irony.
jgw1 · 09/02/2022 19:00

No you wouldn't because you'd add in more caveats,

It is a good job we make our own caveats and don't have to import them from the EU, because there have been so many being used they would have bound to be in short supply.

Well, quite. Any PM with half a brain, would have immediately reacted with "what the hell are you thinking?" when faced with a jolly gathering with tinsel and champers, 30+ people in his garden with bottles of booze and trestle tables full of snacks, or a group of people singing Happy Birthday around a cabinet room table laden with party food, a birthday cake and lager. But Johnson's reaction was to join in.
