to think the common idea that Diana was murdered is absurd

Heard a journalist on the radio the other day speculating it was not an accident and heard others saying the same. AIBU to think people like this are complete idiots?

I wouldn’t say it’s a “common view” but yes it is a daft one. A “murder”that relies entirely on the victim not putting their seatbelt on is a flimsy plan at best.

Hellocatshome · 29/01/2022 17:08

I dont think it is a commonly held belief.

runningoutofnewnames · 29/01/2022 17:11

I think it's unlikely, but not impossible given we know things like this do happen - look at history. And, it's why the royals have protection, some people are out to get them.

The suggestion is, this could be secret services due to Diana having a child with Dodi, right? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there are sociopathic people / institutions with enough money / power who didn't want that to happen, it's not beyond the bounds of reason.

I think it's pretty unlikely. But we all need to be wary of anything we're seeing through the lens of the media, we don't know what the real story is. That's not tin foil hat stuff, that comes from working in marketing and around PR types!

I think people who say they know for sure are being idiots, yes! They don't have the evidence. But to entertain it as a possibility isn't being stupid IMO.

ChimChimeny · 29/01/2022 17:12

I dont think she was murdered but the number of paps and the dangerous driving must have contributed to or caused the car accident

Hoppinggreen · 29/01/2022 17:13

Very unlikely
Also, I don’t think it was necessary. People were staring to lose interest/fall out of love with her and she did far more damage to The Monarchy by dying than she did when alive

This. The person in the car who wore a seatbelt survived.

I don't think it's a widely-held view, either, though.

PlanetNormal · 29/01/2022 17:17

Diana’s death has always struck me as an absurd thing for conspiracy theories to focus on, simply because she died in such entirely unremarkable circumstances. Killed in a car crash with a drunk driver at the wheel, and not wearing her seat belt. It literally happens all the time, in every country.

WheelieBinPrincess · 29/01/2022 17:17
LordEmsworth · 29/01/2022 17:18

YABU for claiming it's a "common view". A minority of people may strongly believe it, but most people don't...

Raquelos · 29/01/2022 17:19

Yeah you're right they are morons fixated on a fairytale.

Crucible · 29/01/2022 17:20

It's a common response to something very significant happening, people need a 'big' reason for something 'big' happening. Someone so young, famous and attractive dying so suddenly means that some people simply can't comprehend that the very mundane reason she died was because she didn't put a belt on and her driver was drunk. (I'm not arguing about the paparazzi behind the car, just the fact that she would probably have survived with a belt on)

Figgygal · 29/01/2022 17:20

Out of the 4 of them in the car the one wearing a seat belt survived
But dont let that get in the way of a good story

Justawaterformeplease · 29/01/2022 17:21

She was on the front of the sunday red tops every week!
Ozanj · 29/01/2022 17:22

I think the media focussed on the conspiracies because nobody wanted to speculate that the reason why she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt in the car was probably to hide from the paps. If it was a murder the media did it

SickAndTiredAgain · 29/01/2022 17:24

It would be a ridiculous way to murder someone. Even if they knew she never wore a seatbelt, planning a car crash is pretty hit and miss in terms of damage done, risk of injury etc.

PAFMO · 29/01/2022 17:25

It was a fringe loony view even back then from the sort of person who thinks the WTC was a controlled explosion, Jim Morrison had a facelift and became Barry Manilow and the Moon landing was filmed in a studio.
It's never been a mainstream opinion.
She died because she didn't wear a seatbelt and the driver was pissed.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 29/01/2022 17:30

Murdered?

By the Pernod drinking driver?
The pursuing paparazzi?
Or someone maybe visited a clairvoyant and predicted these events and sat in the hotel lobby stealthily hypnotising her : “Do not put on your seat belt..do not put on your seat belt…”

I am guessing that you weren’t listening to Radio 4?

RightOnTheEdge · 29/01/2022 17:34

YANBU about it being absurd. It's ridiculous.
There are always comments about it under every news story about the royals.
They murdered Diana! Hmm

DiddyHeck · 29/01/2022 17:37

What makes you say it's a common view OP?

makkapacca · 29/01/2022 17:38

i think the queen gave an internal sigh of relief and the royals in general as she was a loose cannon especially after the panorama interview. Her death was therefore convenient but I still think it was an accident. She was under a shoddy security team.

OP posts:
makkapacca · 29/01/2022 17:38

because everybody i know thinks it was a murder.

I was about to say the complete opposite. I don’t know anyone who thinks she was murdered. Very unpredictable way to attempt to kill someone.
PrincessNikla · 29/01/2022 17:40

Of course it is possible, car crash could have been set up - remember the royal family do have a lot of money, and power. Maybe the accident was set up, and then if her injuries were not fatal, she could have been injected with something to help her along...

I dont think they did, but they certainly could have

PlanetNormal · 29/01/2022 17:41

@makkapacca

because everybody i know thinks it was a murder.
You need more intelligent friends, OP.
DiddyHeck · 29/01/2022 17:41

@makkapacca

because everybody i know thinks it was a murder.
That's very unusual
