“that if you want something enough, you can achieve it”

“You’re given one life and it’s down to you what you do with it
. You can literally go in any direction. When I’ve spoken about that in the past I have been slammed a little bit, with people saying ‘it’s easy for you to say that because you’ve not grown up in poverty, so for you to sit there and say we all have the same 24 hours in a day is not correct.’ But, technically, what I’m saying is correct. We do.

“I understand we all have different backgrounds and we’re all raised in different ways and we do have different financial situations, but I think if you want something enough you can achieve it. It just depends on what lengths you want to go to get where you want to be in the future. And I’ll go to any length. I’ve worked my absolute arse off to get where I am now.”

Not someone id come across before, a reality star, who has said the above

is she being reasonable or not?

So are you saying that when she spouts bollocks she shouldn't be picked up on it ? This is not being bullied - she's simply reaping what she has sown.

Being a social media effluenter is not of any consequence and achieves nothing of real use in her case (with a nod to the person who found the hair curlers up above somewhere). I'd contrast her with Marcus Rashford who tries to do something useful and worthwhile with his fame.[/quote]
It’s absolutely bullying - they were talking about it on radio 2 today.

She’s young and she said something stupid, but the adults lining up to crow about it are much, much worse. The only person on earth who can hand on heart say they’ve never said anything stupid or changed their opinion on something is @PeaceONoeuf - everyone else matures.

Do you think she deserves this much grief for one stupid, ill-informed comment?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 07/01/2022 19:05

@ivykaty44

She's lost 20k followers over the last few days apparently,

how many did she have? what sort of % is that ?

Oh it's not many at all in the grand scheme of things for her (she's got more than six million followers on Instagram alone) I just thought I would point out that she hasn't gained new followers from this wave of press coverage as someone upthread suggested she would have.
Pumperthepumper · 07/01/2022 19:07

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

What, being bullied endlessly by grown adults?

Firstly, she's a grown adult herself. Secondly, people challenging her statements does not equal bullying.

See my comment above. She’s absolutely everywhere today with her stupid, naive comment. People have committed suicide over this kind of unnecessary backlash.
Seb342 · 07/01/2022 19:07

Everyone always wants to hate on people that are successful and have wealth. Personally I think good for her, I can't get annoyed at something so trivial. It's just another reason for people to be offended and you need to ask yourself what she's said so bad that warrants this amount of negative attention and remember she's 22 years old, this online witch-hunt could tip her over the edge and I hope she's got people around supporting her right now because I'd hate my children to be going through this for something so trivial. We all make our own life choices and there's a lot of people out there who haven't had a good hand dealt to them but they make the best of it and carry on instead of moaning and conducting a pity party.

workingtheusername · 07/01/2022 19:08

@Pumperthepumper if people are being nasty about her personally that's awful. If people are critiquing what she said that's debate.

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 19:09

@Pumperthepumper

You seem to be forgetting the smug undertones to her comment and the underlying attitude of "oh, well, if you didn't make it like I did you obviously didn't work hard enough'. So, yes, I do think she deserves to be picked up on it.

She's happy enough to cash in on the publicity when it suits her and when it makes her a great deal of money, so she can cash in on the crap that is being dealt in her direction now. Hopefully she'll think twice before she posts such unmitigated rubbish in the future, although I doubt it.

Franticbutterfly · 07/01/2022 19:11

Anyone can work their arse off, it doesn't often make them rich though.

You think she deserves this kind of attention, all day, for something stupid she said on a podcast? Grown adults lining up to slag her off? The comments about her showing her tits to become famous? The idea that she’s on Tommy Fury’s coattails? At 22?

merrygoround23 · 07/01/2022 19:13

It's not like she's worked her way up in a complex job or completed a degree whilst building a home life and career is it

Againstmachine · 07/01/2022 19:14

You choose to live your life in public eye, posting about all your life and everything, the shit is going to hit the fan at some point and that's going to be in public too she's made her choices live with it

Againstmachine · 07/01/2022 19:16

The comments about her showing her tits to become famous?

The problem is she went on a show that is basically about showing your body and having sex to become famous same as her partner, so the above is true.

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 19:18

@Pumperthepumper

(I can't quote your posts as you're quoting mine - hence me doing it this way !)

Yes, I do think she deserves it. She is a grown adult herself. You seem to have lost sight of this. If she was a child, then I'd think differently. She is not.

She has cashed in on her looks to become famous, and this includes showing her tits and arse off to the world. Why SHOULDN'T she be picked up on this ? You make your choices and live with the consequences. After all, this is what she seems to think, isn't it ?

What about all the young people that don't have her support, her options or her privilege that might feel like shit because they haven't "achieved" what she did? Who's got their back? Who's supporting them through this blame and shame?

She's currently got 6.3 million followers so I doubt 20k even registers
Juancornetto · 07/01/2022 19:22

@PinkArt

I think she's worked clever, rather than worked hard. Yes obviously with all the privilege that came from a solid, well off family background and with looks etc to give her a huge step up. But she was never hugely popular on Love Island, she reached the final two because people liked her boyfriend Tommy, not her. And yes she will have had loads of opportunities thrown at her after the show, but so have many others who haven't managed to spin that into a (a quick search says) 6.3mill instagram following and a million pound job with PLT. Amber, who won that series and was hugely popular herself has 'just' 2.6mill followers, Maura who was equally popular has 3.3mill. You don't have to be a fan of what she does to see that she's been pretty savvy at spinning opportinuties beyond the usual life cycle of a reality show contributor. And from her current place in life she probably does think it's because she worked hard and doesn't yet have a wide enough world view to see that it's not that simple. But it can be true that she's worked hard at what she does AND that working hard alone isn't enough, at the same time.
Yes, I think talking about how strategic she's been would have been far more interesting than the "work hard" bollocks. I've worked hard in the past and progressed nowhere near as far as colleagues who've been cleverer about what they focused on and who've really thought about how they could succeed more easily. I think that's a much more important lesson than vague "work hard" mantras.

I do wonder how long it'll last for her. She seems to buy jewellery and bags like she's worth 10s of millions rather than "just" a couple of million. Being so materialisitic may have served her well so far but I'm not sure how long her earnings will be able to keep up with her spending habits.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/01/2022 19:24

Why is the backlash unnecessary? Her kind of career means opening up your life for monetary gain. And I'd imagine it's a matter of balancing the rough with the smooth. She chose to make these statements and probably knew there'd be some blowback. But she made that choice.

But it will be a 5 day wonder and then she'll be back to making serious wodges of cash for each Insta post.

Yes, her savviness is more interesting. She's top of the UK influencer tree, which I'm sure is a pretty crowded field, and that takes some doing.

She’s 22. The level of spite aimed her way is disproportionate.

Because she’s 22 and she made as stupid comment on a podcast that everyone, for some reason, has taken and ran with. She’s hardly the first person to say a variation of ‘poor people should work harder’ yet she’s had a full day of being ridiculed by everyone. It’s disproportionate, and it’s bullying.
ldontWanna · 07/01/2022 19:33

@Pumperthepumper if her comments were blatantly racist or disablist or homophobic instead( and there already are some undertones in what she said) would you be so quick to defend her?

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 19:34

@Pumperthepumper

At what age do you think it would be appropriate, as you seem to be hanging your hat on her age so much ?

I understand what you're saying, I just don't agree with you.

I’m not defending her, so no.

And she didn’t say anything racist or homophobic, so it’s a moot point.

I don’t think there is an age that someone deserves this kind of grief for a stupid comment about working harder on a podcast.

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 07/01/2022 19:36

I'm not surprised people are miffed at this. Loads of us - most of us - have genuinely worked out arsed off through the last 2 years, working from home and home schooling at the same time or all the keyworkers especially hospital staff slogging their guts out through the pandemic. People who get up in the middle of the night this cold dark winter to do essential jobs that we all take for granted like gritting the roads and countless others. And here's some 22 year old lecturing us all about how she's worked so hard Hmm when from what most of us can see she spends most of her time shopping, getting her nails and hair done, going on holiday and sitting on her arse posting selfies to Instagram.
