“that if you want something enough, you can achieve it”

“You’re given one life and it’s down to you what you do with it
. You can literally go in any direction. When I’ve spoken about that in the past I have been slammed a little bit, with people saying ‘it’s easy for you to say that because you’ve not grown up in poverty, so for you to sit there and say we all have the same 24 hours in a day is not correct.’ But, technically, what I’m saying is correct. We do.

“I understand we all have different backgrounds and we’re all raised in different ways and we do have different financial situations, but I think if you want something enough you can achieve it. It just depends on what lengths you want to go to get where you want to be in the future. And I’ll go to any length. I’ve worked my absolute arse off to get where I am now.”

Not someone id come across before, a reality star, who has said the above

is she being reasonable or not?

It's a stupid comment. The same as saying everyone has one life and start the same. Some people are born into poverty, some people are extremely sick, some people are abused. The thing is, she has risen to fame and fortune from love Island and promoting herself through IG. Is she seriously thinking she'd be the creative director of PLT at 22, with no experience, bevause she's worked hard Shockand Hmm

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 07/01/2022 19:42

But yes I was quite stupid when I was 22, we all get a wake up call eventually don't we, maybe this is hers. Maybe she can make some kind of documentary for iplayer where she meets ordinary people and learns what it's like to have to struggle in life, or maybe she can spend a couple of days working in one of the jobs she thinks we all do because we're lazy.

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 19:43

@Pumperthepumper

So although you keep mentioning her age, actually it's not relevant at all ? Which is what many other people have said.

Did you know that she has form, though ? She's previously made both racist and homophobic posts. So it's not like she doesn't know what posting can potentially do - it can cause a shit-storm.

She clearly hasn't learned from previous ill-advised posts, so obviously a harsher lesson is needed. Perhaps if she just worked a bit harder and tried a bit more and, you know, really was determined she could become intelligent enough to understand the consequences of what she's doing....

I'd imagine her job which she always seems to be travelling about and not doing it, is just so they have her name on the brand and she really doesn't have much to do with them.

It’s relevant in that she probably will become less ignorant about poverty with more life experience.

Ah yes, people who are bullied and humiliated often have their lives improved by it. No doubt she’ll be a much better person on the back of those phone-ins about her tits.

Greenfields124 · 07/01/2022 19:47

It's a tricky one because shes said it before and realised it was inflammatory and then said it again.
She does come across as really naive and not understanding of the luck she has had and that it's perfectly ok to admit it as well.
Her luck being picked for love island boosting her career, her luck that she is attractive, as people in her line of work dont tend to be unattractive as it's how they make their money.

One thing I will say about her interview is I don't deem her really all that successful in herself as a person as she states she is never happy with what she has.
That she lives in a dream house but still wants more.
Seems a bit rubbish to be honest.
I think she will look back and cringe at her younger self for saying it.
But don't we all when we look back at our 22 year old selves, I thought I knew everything Blush

MeredithGreyishblue · 07/01/2022 19:52

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

What, being bullied endlessly by grown adults?

Firstly, she's a grown adult herself. Secondly, people challenging her statements does not equal bullying.

The people on this thread calling her a vacuous twat? That's not challenging her statement! That's a personal attack.

Don't get me wrong, she's spoken like a naive princess but the blow up is very harsh. And not necessary really.

TomPinch · 07/01/2022 19:53

So as far as I can tell...

She is not a scientist.
She is not a politician.
She is not a philosopher.
She is not a cleric.
She is not an expert in anything in particular.
She has not achieved or done anything that is an obvious public good.

There is no reason to believe that any of her opinions are more valuable than anyone else's.

So regardless of what she says, be it positive or negative, why should anyone pay any attention to her?

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 19:53

@Pumperthepumper

In her case I think a bit of humiliation might work wonders. Humility seems to be something she has no idea about. I'm aware they're different words (although the stem of the word is the same - a clue there I feel).

It's quite clear she's a self-entitled little madam who think she's has all the answers. I'm not saying I was perfect at 22, and with hindsight I learned as I became older, but I also didn't make the same mistake multiple times and I also didn't go around lecturing other people on how to live their lives. I knew how to live my life, and that was sufficient for me.

I have no sympathy for her, she's reaping what she has sown in spades. I hope it's a wake-up call for her, but given the world has been here before with Molly-Mae it seems unlikely.

MeredithGreyishblue · 07/01/2022 19:56

@mumsnethq I'm interested to know why this thread is "in the spirit" with personal attacks on an individual but the thread about David Walliams' books being spiteful was pulled for personally attacking him? Hmmm. Hmm
Why would we protect Walliams at all costs but be fine with tearing MMH to shreds?

And I hope she’s mentally strong enough to deal with this sort of humiliation.

ldontWanna · 07/01/2022 20:02

Isn't PLT owned by Boohoo , who were found (by an investigation of the sunday times) to pay their workers £3.50 an hour in a city in England? As well as forcing them to work during lockdowns and while ill.

The irony and hypocrisy of it all, never mind the ethics.

theNumbersStation · 07/01/2022 20:02

The personal attacks on her absolutely should be deleted meredith.

But I think it is right to be able to debate the contents of the statement she made.

Againstmachine · 07/01/2022 20:05

Yep she represents a company who doesn't just run sweatshops on other country's runs them in this country.

But we all can make it.

ldontWanna · 07/01/2022 20:05

And I hope she’s mentally strong enough to deal with this sort of humiliation.

And I hope that all the vulnerable and struggling young people that follow ,maybe even support and admire her are mentally strong enough to deal with her comments that they're just not working or trying hard enough .

Why wouldn’t they be?
ldontWanna · 07/01/2022 20:08

Ah your defence of her makes sense now.

I don’t know what you mean by that. Why wouldn’t they be?
Againstmachine · 07/01/2022 20:09

Why wouldn’t they be?

You couldn't make this up, you are concerned about her but have no concerns about mental health of her followers.

Why would her comments about working harder make any difference to the mental health of her followers? Can you answer?
Suzi888 · 07/01/2022 20:13

All she had to do was shut up and look pretty, she had one job 🤣.

DeliriaSkibbly · 07/01/2022 20:16

@Pumperthepumper

Molly-Mae's statements, read by her avid followers who hang on her every word, imply that if you've not "made it" then you're lazy and haven't tried enough.

It's no different, really, to the view in certain sectors of American society that being poor is a reflection of your inner status, and means you must be feckless and lazy and just haven't really tried.

Jk987 · 07/01/2022 20:17

@MiloAndEddie

I think she’s unreasonable and tone deaf.

Yes we’ve all got 24 hours in a day but she’s not juggling kids/caring responsibilities/an actual 9-5 job that you have to do to keep a roof over your head etc etc.

I think she’s bloody cheeky

Having kids is a choice. She's chosen not to have them yet in favour of working. She's 23.
