Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

Never seen anyone do that! Except water if you’re really thirsty

Nosnowthisyear · 29/12/2021 08:58

Odd. What’s he like with alcohol?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/12/2021 08:58

I work with adults with LD and all three men do this.

Take it, down it, one slams the cup down but the other two take the cup to the sink.

Every time. No sipping.

Not saying your bloke had LD, but I’ve accepted it as an everyday thing that some people do.

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 08:59

After a gym class maybe, I would be drinking fast. But anything else?! I can't 🙈

He doesnt drink alcohol btw which is probably a bloody good thing

Very odd. Have you asked him why he throws it down his neck and doesn't savour it every time?

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 09:03

I've been asking him for 8 years! He then tries it with whatever we have, normally the morning coffee, to stop me pmsl at him, then next time we're back to down-in-one like a pirate, as he is unaware he is doing it! 😂

I have noticed my boyfriend doing that. Not in one gulp, but much faster than me. Even things like a cup of coffee that I usually drag out over half an hour or so. He'll be done with his in 2 minutes. Must be a man thing 🤷‍♀️

Have you asked him what its about? Mine will be pleased to know there's a kindred spirit out there

How many times have you actually drowned?

Branleuse · 29/12/2021 09:06

my eldest son does this, he also is a really fast eater. It makes it hard to be in the same room while hes eating or drinking at times . Hes autistic and an adult and has always done it and nothing works to change it

It’s really not a man thing, I know no man who does this and I work for a large male dominated company Confused

I neck a cup of coffee as quickly as I can. Not sure why other than once it gets below burning point I really don't enjoy it.
Couldn't do it with a fizzy drink though. Head would explode.

StarfishDish · 29/12/2021 09:10

I do this!

rufflyshirt · 29/12/2021 09:11

"like thor" has set me off, what a great image

I have to say I've never met anyone outside of sports who drinks really quickly (and even then, it's just water so easier to swallow fast). Intriguing.

I have known a couple of people (men) who have done that over the years

One had disordered eating and was hugely obese. He would add spoonfuls of sugar to white wine then down it in one ! The other just drank very, very quickly .

lololololollll · 29/12/2021 09:18

There's nowt as queer as folk

I drink very fast, regardless of what it is. No Thor style slamming though. It's why I hate the current obsession with going for coffee - I've finished mine in 2 mins flat and am ready to leave. I do it with all drinks. (I eat incredibly slowly though.)

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 09:22

@Itonlytakesonetree can you drink it scalding hot?

OP posts:
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/12/2021 09:23

He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

Grin love this. I'm envisaging it with the following:

Bone china teacup
Froot shoot
Cocktail glass bristling with umbrellas, straws and other decorations

Itonlytakesonetree · 29/12/2021 09:25

I do wait a minute rather than directly from the kettle. Then gone. If in a cafe, it's never properly hot, so that can be drunk instantly. have to large glasses of water when drinking alcohol as I drink that at the same speed as everything else unfortunately.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/12/2021 09:30

I would find this very unattractive.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 29/12/2021 09:34

Wow, I thought I was the only one!

I do this with all drinks, I can't just sip. I can't sip at all, actually. I kind of create a seal with my mouth/glass/liquid and... suck. Everyone takes the piss about this, but I just can't drink any other way. Tipping liquid into my mouth to swallow makes me gag, so I suck and down in one. Every drink, every time. Big drinks might require a breath in between, but I won't even take the cup away from my mouth for that.

(yes, I realise this sounds nuts now I've written it out!)
