Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

I will down a mug of tea in three goes if I’m thirsty or it’s going tepid. Too much living on my own, and working in a dilbert -style ‘cubicle’. I don’t have much awareness of how other people do it.

I can just about be polite with a cup of tea in a cafe, and I can spend hours over a glass of wine - a learned skill.

TillyTopper · 29/12/2021 11:16

That would give me the ick instantly!

ghostmouse · 29/12/2021 11:27

My LH used to do this with hot drinks. I’d still be nursing mine for 20 mins and he’d literally down in one. How he never burnt his throat I’ll never know

junebirthdaygirl · 29/12/2021 11:32

I hate hot tea as want to actually drink it down . I add extra milk and just drink it..probably in 3 goes. My dh has his quite hot and sips. I ate when he makes mine as always too hot.
I hate sipping water too now that l think of it. I just fill the glass twice and knock it back.
No wonder l don't like alcohol as that would be a dangerous practice

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/12/2021 11:45

Buy him one of these, it might slow him down a bit.

Essexmate · 29/12/2021 11:46

My DH does this. It’s like he’s a sponge and the liquid just goes in seconds. It’s actually really annoying —because I can drink 1 glass but he’ll go through loads—

Welshgal85 · 29/12/2021 11:56

My DF does this but only with certain drinks (beer or wine!) and I find it really embarrassing! He doesn’t have a drink problem as rarely drinks due to health reasons and they don’t buy alcohol very often at all. I don’t know why he does it

KenAddams · 29/12/2021 12:11

Mine does this to apparently he just can't help it 😂 he can be like that scene from. Elf

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 12:17

I think I might! I offered him a straw this morning. He declined.

Two of my girls do this. I savour a favourite drink- can or bottle- and I might take a day or more enjoying the same drink. (I’m aware that’s probably sounding strange too!)
When I give a fancy drink to my children- for example at the theatre- they open it and drink it immediately. The whole drink. As soon as they get it they open and finish it in seconds. To me it feels like they can’t enjoy it as much as I do. But I’m trying to be more tolerant of peoples differences as I age!
My little girl also eats meals very fast and will eat a whole box of chocolates at the theatre in the time I’d eat one or two. It’s interesting.

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 12:32

@Cissy me too! A can of Cola can last me 2 days so can chocolate. Crisps tend to disappear quite quickly if left near me though

OP this has given me the most amazing mental image so thank you for that!

TheVolturi · 29/12/2021 12:40

I would like to see this sounds funny!

GiantHaystacks2021 · 29/12/2021 12:43

That's very annoying.
Couldn't watch him doing that.
I also agree that it is very unattractive.

My ex used to do this thing when he was finished a good meal where he throw down his cutlery in a hugely exaggerated way, hands in the air, his elbows out, cutlery thrown criss cross onto the plate with a loud clatter.
It was SUPER annoying to watch.
I lost count of how many times I asked him to stop doing that.
One of the many, many reasons why I ditched him.

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/12/2021 12:49

@Itonlytakesonetree

I drink very fast, regardless of what it is. No Thor style slamming though. It's why I hate the current obsession with going for coffee - I've finished mine in 2 mins flat and am ready to leave. I do it with all drinks. (I eat incredibly slowly though.)
I do this with hot drinks. I don't gulp them down and slam the mug, but tea and coffee has to be gone while still steaming, so I have small cups and finish them within a couple of minutes.

I can't understand why people enjoy a vat of tepid coffee over the course of half an hour.

Aimee1987 · 29/12/2021 13:00

@HacerSonarSusPasos

I have noticed my boyfriend doing that. Not in one gulp, but much faster than me. Even things like a cup of coffee that I usually drag out over half an hour or so. He'll be done with his in 2 minutes. Must be a man thing 🤷‍♀️
I'm a woman and I do this. My partner constantly slags me over it. I make my coffee and tea really milky so they dont burn and i can just drink them. Difference between me and OPs partner is I do drink alcohol and can sup a drink. I had to train myself as in my youth I would drink far too much too fast. I also make my drinks more watered down so more tonic less gin
StrawberrySanta · 29/12/2021 13:08

Slamming it down like Thor 😂
My DH does this with cold drinks, eg a glass of water he stands by the sink with his glass of water drinks it all or tips the remainder down the sink and walks away. I find it so odd to not have a drink to sip all day long or during a meal but he waits til after he's finished then has his drink drinks the full thing and leaves the glass by the sink 🤷‍♀️ weirdo!

NellieBertram · 29/12/2021 13:11

@BabyDubsEverywhere

Wow, I thought I was the only one!

I do this with all drinks, I can't just sip. I can't sip at all, actually. I kind of create a seal with my mouth/glass/liquid and... suck. Everyone takes the piss about this, but I just can't drink any other way. Tipping liquid into my mouth to swallow makes me gag, so I suck and down in one. Every drink, every time. Big drinks might require a breath in between, but I won't even take the cup away from my mouth for that.

(yes, I realise this sounds nuts now I've written it out!)

Can you eat soup from a spoon?
takenforgrantednana · 29/12/2021 13:24

make him a drink but put it in a cup that has a lid, which he has to leave on, so say a travel mug, firstly it will be way to hot to drink down in one, but the lid will actually stop him from doing so. then sit him down and tell him he is drinking like an animal and you find it repulsive. its a complete lack of table mannners to be honest

LetHimHaveIt · 29/12/2021 13:43

Actually, I'd find being told what vessel I have to put my drinks in, pretty repulsive. I haven't seen many animals drink from cups or glasses outside a PG Tips ad, so I don't quite know how he's doing that. He's drinking quickly, is all. Good for him. Where does this modern obsession with constant sipping come from? Far more irritating. Watching my Yr 6 class constantly up and down to pull from a sports bottle, with the nozzle dragging their bottom lip down while they stare into space, drives me round the bend. I wish they'd drink like Thor!

rocky1914 · 29/12/2021 13:46

He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

Very amusing imagery you have created for us right there 🤣🤣

rocky1914 · 29/12/2021 13:47

@LetHimHaveIt ...so would you teach your child to gulp down a whole cup tea whilst it's still hot? Or even warm, for that matter? 🤨

rocky1914 · 29/12/2021 13:50

@Nosnowthisyear

Odd. What’s he like with alcohol?
I mean, I wouldn't necessarily place alcohol in this category ...cos I definitely gulp down an entire glass of wine in one go after a tough day 😄
LetHimHaveIt · 29/12/2021 13:51

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Get it done. Move on. Languid drinking is a bore.

MrsMorningStarOfBethleh · 29/12/2021 13:51

@HalfBrick

My ASD child chugs drinks in one... My belly would be a full sloshing mess if I did that.
My dd1 who has ASD does this, the gulping noises give me the rage! My dd2 who also has ASD sips delicately after being nagged to drink something!
