Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

This 😩

I wouldn't mind tbh but it's the fact that he has now taught 3yo DD to do the same that is most annoying 🤦‍♀️

daisyjgrey · 29/12/2021 15:02

I've a step son with adhd who also does this, I'm not sure if it's linked though...

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 29/12/2021 17:47

@rocky1914 I don't really drink now but one memorable, very bad day, I drank an entire bottle of wine from the bottle. Almost in one go BlushBlushBlushBlush and then smoked 10 fags

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2021 17:52

I work with young people who are neurodiverse and this is a really common behaviour. Lots of reasons why I suspect in terms of fulfilling need, sensory seeking and avoidant behaviours, literal thinking and so on.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/12/2021 17:58

If he really wants to be Thor though, he should dash the glass into the nearest fireplace Grin

BabyDubsEverywhere · 29/12/2021 18:12

@NellieBertram no, I can't take soup from a spoon Grin I struggle with icecream as it starts melting.

I am the only one of my mothers 4 dc who sucks to drink and downs everything in one. We all went from breast feeding to open cups at a year old, so I don't think its a parenting issue. Only 1 of my 4 dc do it. He's autistic, I'm currently under assessment for autism and ADHD. Maybe it's that?

You definitely sound like my kinda girl lol that's insane! 😆

rocky1914 · 29/12/2021 19:55

@MaybeHeIsMyCat ..or guy!! Apologies lol!

WhatDidISayAlan · 29/12/2021 20:21

I do this and I can’t really explain why I do it. I don’t do it with alcohol, and I don’t slam a glass down, and I don’t like tea or coffee or hot drinks, but I do drink all my cold drinks (squash, water, pop, etc) in one go.

Idontbelieveit14 · 29/12/2021 20:31

I do this but only with milkshake 🤔

MamaWeasel · 29/12/2021 20:32

A friend's dd did this, but only once in my hearing. The audible glugging gave me the rage. Annoying AF.

BeanBurrito · 29/12/2021 20:38

I do this (the drinking fast, not the slamming!) I have low levels of a hormone which means I’m always extremely thirsty. Also, like a previous poster said, with coffee and tea, I only enjoy it when it’s scalding hot!

Girl! Yeah it was a VERY bad day and the wine didn't touch the sides

My mum is like that with tea, and also soup "It's cold" she will say Me and dad, gazing at the steam coming off the still bubbling soup ConfusedConfusedConfused
Changechangychange · 29/12/2021 21:37

I sometimes chug a pint of squash or water if I am really thirsty (I often don’t drink during the day).

I wouldn’t do it for a hot drink, or at all unless I was really headachey and parched.

Gin4thewin4 · 29/12/2021 22:01

I do this!
My partner always comments on it and often mentions the noise of my gulps too.
Its the reason I do not like my coffee or tea hot but just warm.
It has also caused me to be significantly drunk on very little alcohol.

Why do I do it? I have no idea but feel dissatisfied if I don't....

pinkpirlie · 30/12/2021 17:36

This is how I drink in general. I'm always thirsty, so every drink I have is down in a few gulps. I told my partner to make me two drinks at a time now as one is just never enough.

Used to win every drinking game when I was younger. Grin

LovelyIssues · 30/12/2021 17:36

I don't slam the cup down but do often continually drink whatever drink is in my hand Blush

It's the feeling of it hitting the back of your throat - if you don't have that sensation, your brain is interpreting it as not having had enough.
Lolabray · 30/12/2021 17:47

Typical alpha male Viking style behaviour! Ha ha this did make me chuckle x

Mummabug18 · 30/12/2021 17:59

Drowned "4 and a half" times 🤣🤣

Mummabug18 · 30/12/2021 18:04

My DH can drag out a can for hours! I'm done in about 4 mouthfuls (15-20 mins) then soon want another drink, of anything, which will also be gone fast. The bottles of still Lucozade go in 2. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I never "Thor" a cup or bottle, that's a whole other level 😆

Idontlikecheesecake · 30/12/2021 18:08

My partner says I drink weird. I take a massive gulp and I will only swallow a bit of a time. So the biggest gulps can take 3 swallows to swallow that mouthful. I’ve tried drinking normally, but I just go back to drinking this way. My partner has tried drinking my way and he says he chokes. Does anyone else do this?
