Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

@LowlandLucky

My DH used slam his cup down, i told him next time he done it i would slam mine on his head, he doesn't do it anymore.
😂
Shallwegoforawalk · 30/12/2021 23:22

Has anybody else had to go get a glass of water to test how they drink after reading this thread? Grin

MusicTeacherSussex · 30/12/2021 23:30

@Suipigz

Like toddler style yam and slam? Maybe something happened in his childhood and he got stuck at a two year old age of drinking? Or found out he was a superhero/ Demi god?? 😅
YAM AND SLAM! l love it and will be using this

I read on the internet, so must be true, how you eat and drink depends on the pecking order in your house growing up

If you eat/drink everything quickly then you were worried someone would come and pinch it from you. It’s the same if you eat/drink your favourite thing first

Personally I leave my favourite thing till last cos I would stab you with my fork if you came at me for it 😂

Pgs007 · 30/12/2021 23:34

Autistic traits apparently, female here and have always downed non fizzy soft drinks, seriously struggle to sip, I manage to put bottles down but then want to finish those in one too, constant battle with myself to save some for in a while

MusicTeacherSussex · 30/12/2021 23:45

Interesting aside... I used to eat really slowly (probably from home where we were encouraged to chat at the dinner table and not scarf food down)

When I went to school o was embarrassed that I was on the "last eating" table and it was a hugely negative experience for me where the dinner ladies stood round tutting and hurrying us.

Now, I am determined to eat nicely but a bit quicker and if I'm the last eating it takes me right back to the red faced ashamed 8 year old who was supposedly holding everyone up.

Oh god! This is making me howl with laughter!!! Slamming it down everytime like Thor!!! And drowning if you were to drink it too fast!! Can you imagine if he did it with a sports cap bottle? His head would turn inside out!! 😂😂😂

terrimom · 31/12/2021 00:47

I've noticed that my daughter's boyfriend does this. I thought it was odd.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 31/12/2021 01:02

I rarely drink hot drinks and if I do I have to leave them to cool a lot, but otherwise I often don't leave the kitchen with a drink, this is mainly because I am terrible at remembering to drink until I am very thirsty or dehydrated, so I start drinking and it's so thirst quenching I can't stop. It's not healthy.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/12/2021 01:06

My toddlers try to steal my cup so this is how I drink coffee in my house. But usually cold 🙄

Dutchesss · 31/12/2021 01:09

I do this with water and juice. I sip tea and coffee, probably because they're hot. I sip alcohol because I am a light weight.Blush

antisocialsocialclub · 31/12/2021 01:19

He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

😂😂😂 Sorry OP but 🤣

BookishKitten · 31/12/2021 01:31

I’m a parent of an autistic child and I am on a FB support group for parents of people with learning disabilities.
Your partner sure sounds like he could be on the spectrum. Lots of autistics do that and also with food. Might be worth investigating.

Monty27 · 31/12/2021 01:38

OP funny not funny but pmsl
It's the kind of thing you don't want to analyse 🤣🤣🤣

undertheglassceiling · 31/12/2021 01:38

Never seen that. My husband does the opposite. Tiny sips of everything followed by a loud swallowing sound that doesn’t match the volume of liquid sipped. Drives.Me.Crazy.

WrongWayApricot · 31/12/2021 02:12

I can't stand it if it's a clear glass and it looks like a dark tunnel. Reminds me of birds swallowing fish whole. YANBU (I obviously have an unreasonable level of dislike for it though)

Irishgene · 31/12/2021 04:10

I'm not sure I could handle that, I have misophonia and my husband's chopping and slurpping is enough at the best of times!!

MarciaMarciaMarcia · 31/12/2021 04:20

@Arethechildreninbedyet

How fucking weird.

How was he raised? I’ve seen on here some people were raised with really strange attitudes to giving their kids liquids there was a thread about it ages ago and lots said there was only a drink at meal times and if you asked for another you had to wait (like food) is it a childhood habit?

My ex was not allowed to drink at mealtime as a child, as it would fill him up. He had to wait until after eating to have a drink. So strange.
MarciaMarciaMarcia · 31/12/2021 04:22

I feel your pain. Dh does that as well. He chugs everything - even pints. Shock

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 31/12/2021 08:59

🤣🤣.

I do it with water, and have to really slow myself down with wine. Luckily I'm not a big drinker.
I remember my dad drinking water in one go when I was younger and possibly saw it as a challenge 🤔.
Once water touches my lips, the glass doesn't leave until it's empty.
I sip tea quickly too as warm tea is pointless to me.

OP, if you didn't love him, this would make you heave, you sound like a fun couple too.

How anyone can choose be offended is bizarre.

ByStarlight · 31/12/2021 15:46

Very interesting thread. My son (10) and I are both very similar - but without the Thor slamming at the end!

I always add lots of milk to hot drinks to cool them down so I can drink them straight down, or in one or two long draughts. Don’t like drinks that are too hot or too cold as I can’t comfortably drink them at my usual pace. Don’t like fizzy drinks either for the same reason.

DS is also only ever drinking in one or two long draughts and then is done. Same with any volume of liquid given - from a small tumbler to a pint sized beaker. He was the same since being a toddler with a sippy cup…. never any sipping, just drinking the whole thing! Same with any liquid given - milk, water, diluted fruit juice or squash.

I never really notice this being unusual, except when he has friends over. However small the container given, his friends only ever take a small sip and then never drink any more. So many drinks end up going to waste. They never seem to be thirsty! That seems more strange to me than DS and my styles of drinking.

IdreamofPilates · 31/12/2021 15:59

Itonlytakesonetree: with you 1000% - hot drinks have to be exactly that - at least 1000 degrees celsius or forget it. Alcohol is consumed with unparalled gusto and speed I am afraid.

Devora13 · 31/12/2021 16:45

'Branleuse

my eldest son does this, he also is a really fast eater. It makes it hard to be in the same room while hes eating or drinking at times . Hes autistic and an adult and has always done it and nothing works to change it'

Same as

shivbo2014 · 31/12/2021 16:48

I do this. Not with coffee, tea, hot chocolate though. If i have cold drink I always down it. I don't slam it down like thor. Might start though.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 31/12/2021 16:54

Not exaggerating, this would be a deal-breaker in a relationship for me!

I cannot take my time with drinks at all - I'm an expensive date at bars because I don't like to treat drinks as entertainment, I just kind of get them over with. I certainly couldn't "nurse" a pint until it was warm like some people can.

However, watching (or, worse, HEARING) people guzzle down drinks makes me rage inwardly. It makes me extremely uncomfortable watching people behave in an animalistic way like that. Such a performance, too. It seems to be men who do this - do they think it makes them look rugged?

It's like chewing with your mouth open - not acceptable after age 5.
