Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

It's a macho thing. Boring AF.

godmum56 · 29/12/2021 09:41

its my understanding that children have to learn how to swallow liquids from a cup or spoon rather than by sucking. I wonder if those folk who drink differently as adults never learned this skill?

LowlandLucky · 29/12/2021 09:42

My DH used slam his cup down, i told him next time he done it i would slam mine on his head, he doesn't do it anymore.

Stiffcondomhat · 29/12/2021 09:44

I do this. I like drinks so they must be consumed ASAP. I haven't got time to be sipping.

inmyslippers · 29/12/2021 09:44

I work with adults with LD and all three men do this

^^ same! Some really fast eaters as well

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 09:46

I'm glad there are others out there! I'm the other kind of busy, where by the time I get to drink it it's stone cold. I think the fast drinkers might be onto something.

FlowerFlour · 29/12/2021 09:48

That is so odd. He can't enjoy the drink if he's pouring it straight down his throat. Does he just drink water, because drinking anything else is pointless?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/12/2021 10:10

When I was a kid, and wanted something. My mum would always say "when I've finished my coffee." And she'd take ages. Now she finishes it in 30 seconds flat. Can't take her anywhere, as I'm sitting over mine for ages and she's finished!

Nocutenamesleft · 29/12/2021 10:11

Ha

My dad is like that. But he does it scalding hot!!! Anything. Stupidly hot. Coffee. Soups. Drinks VERY quick and boiling hot.

He reckons it’s because he grew up in a big family and if you didn’t eat quick. You didn’t eat! So he learnt to eat and drink really quick. He can finish a full meal in around 4 mins.

LemonMuffins · 29/12/2021 10:12

My DH does this with tea. Leaves it sitting there until its almost too cold to bother with then chugs the whole mug Confused

diddl · 29/12/2021 10:14

@BabyDubsEverywhere

Wow, I thought I was the only one!

I do this with all drinks, I can't just sip. I can't sip at all, actually. I kind of create a seal with my mouth/glass/liquid and... suck. Everyone takes the piss about this, but I just can't drink any other way. Tipping liquid into my mouth to swallow makes me gag, so I suck and down in one. Every drink, every time. Big drinks might require a breath in between, but I won't even take the cup away from my mouth for that.

(yes, I realise this sounds nuts now I've written it out!)

Sounds really strange to not be able to take a sip as opposed to not wanting to.

Yes-I could only do it with a cold drink & for tea/coffee if it's cold enough to that I don't want to drink it anymore!

I thought that the point of a hot drink was to sit & enjoy it?

TopCatsTopHat · 29/12/2021 10:17

@MusicTeacherSussex

I've been asking him for 8 years! He then tries it with whatever we have, normally the morning coffee, to stop me pmsl at him, then next time we're back to down-in-one like a pirate, as he is unaware he is doing it! 😂
Like a pirate, like Thor. 😂😂😂 Love the imagery, I think it's great if you laugh about it, sounds like they're is plenty of comedy mileage in this. I'm with a pp who said she doesn't linger over hot drinks, I watch my tea like a hawk and then drink it at the exact point when it will scald slightly on the way down, there is no pleasure in it without. But even that wouldn't be done like a squaddy on initiation night.
Svara · 29/12/2021 10:21

I can't drink a coffee if it's too hot. So I just leave it until it's right, taking maybe a sip or two to judge temperature, then just drink it. If I sipped over a long period it would be too hot or cold.

iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 29/12/2021 10:28

'Down in one like a pirate' 😄

You've got to start saying 'Arrr, me hearties! Shiver me timbers & splice the main brace' every time he does it now.

I do this - I open something at the back of my throat and just pour it down. I can drink two pints of milk this way after training. Growing up in my house if you "took a sip and put a drink down" , someone would drink it. I don't drink alcohol either.
LetHimHaveIt · 29/12/2021 10:39

Meh. Some people see the consumption of food and drink as nothing more than a delivery system to keep them alive. Food is a bit more complicated, but drinking quickly wouldn't bother me. Certainly wouldn't find it 'macho' or 'very unattractive'.

HalfBrick · 29/12/2021 10:41

My ASD child chugs drinks in one...
My belly would be a full sloshing mess if I did that.

Interrobanger · 29/12/2021 10:43

My ex used to do this and it was one of the things that gave me the ick.

FluffyBooBoo · 29/12/2021 10:47

I'm female and I do this.

I don't often drink hot drinks, but when I do, I sip until it's hot enough to finish the rest in one go.

I just don't particularly enjoy the experience of drinking, so sipping over half an hour doesn't work for me.

I don't do this with alcohol though, I do drink that more slowly.

DeadGood · 29/12/2021 10:52

You clearly find it charming OP, so… what’s the point of this thread?

haba · 29/12/2021 10:53

My daughter does this! She would never slam her cup/glass down though, nor does she drink alcohol.
She has asd, with lots of hypersensitivities, and stomach issues so she vomits a lot, so maybe it is a sensation thing? I'll have to ask her.

That said, like previous posters, I drink coffee/tea very quickly, because there's a sweet spot for me, temperature-wise, and I hate it hotter or colder than 'perfect to me' Blush
I don't have too many sensory issues, I don't think.

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 10:55

For a laugh, it was his idea. HTH 😂

housemaus · 29/12/2021 10:57

Oh this is me! I don't do the slamming, though.

But if you put a (non-alcoholic - I have to really force myself to sip those) drink in front of me, it's going down in one or two goes.

I'm a thirsty person, also have sensory processing issues so maybe as PPs have said it's that!

Bagamoyo1 · 29/12/2021 10:59

I down cold drinks when I'm at home. I'm really busy and I figure the best and most time-efficient way of staying hydrated is to down a pint of squash when I have a chance, as I don't know when the next opportunity will be.
I don't do it at work as I have a desk job so I can drink whenever I need to.
