Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

@takenforgrantednana I feel like inviting you to do it for me instead, you seem keen. Then you could smack his bottom 😂😘

well yes that is how he is behaving, like a child as if he has something to prove like some big man downing his pint of beer or in his case milk!

there is nothing nice at all in being in company of people with no table manners, and i have even refused to eat at the same table as my brother in law at christmas because the view of a cement mixer open wide with it ll churning around really doesnt add much to the experience for me.

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 14:04

Omg 😂

I dont drink tea or coffee, if I am thirsty I will have a glass of water, at the sink downed in one.

Alcohol I'll sip, and I have a drink "normally" with food, or when socialising, but if it is just to quench a thirst at home I'll drink quickly and move on.

Mrsjayy · 29/12/2021 14:06

My mum does this I've no idea why never ask her out for a coffee two gulps and it's gone Hmm

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 14:06

Lmao 😂

@LetHimHaveIt

Watching my Yr 6 class constantly up and down to pull from a sports bottle, with the nozzle dragging their bottom lip down while they stare into space, drives me round the bend.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Get it done. Move on. Languid drinking is a bore.

...right. 🙃

Arethechildreninbedyet · 29/12/2021 14:09

How fucking weird.

How was he raised? I’ve seen on here some people were raised with really strange attitudes to giving their kids liquids there was a thread about it ages ago and lots said there was only a drink at meal times and if you asked for another you had to wait (like food) is it a childhood habit?

HeadacheEarthquake · 29/12/2021 14:10

@takenforgrantednana I'd bet your BIL does it to wind you up if that's how you act. PLEASE have you got a picture of you sitting at a separate table at Christmas with a big angry scowl on under your paper hat!!!

Is it like the kid's table, or do you go in a separate room? Grin

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/12/2021 14:11

My son does this and my ex husband. Both on the autistic spectrum.

Er . . . this is what you asked me:

' . . . so would you teach your child to gulp down a whole cup tea whilst it's still hot? Or even warm, for that matter? 🤨

To which I replied that it wouldn't bother me, and that it's the constant sipping and languid drinking that's irritating.

But, sure, do a wanky upside-down smiley. Whatever the fuck that means.

Amandasummers · 29/12/2021 14:16

@Credenhill22

How many times have you actually drowned?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
rocky1914 · 29/12/2021 14:17

@LetHimHaveIt 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ok, wanky upside-down smiley? Hilarious. You got me.

But I actually quoted you because you said in one breath that it bothers you when you're Yr 6 kids sip their drinks.

But then in the next breath, you said that it wouldn't bother you if your child gulped down a cup of hot tea.

But thanks for the laughs though 😆

No fighting guys, that's what the vaccination and lockdown threads are for!

This a joke thread and some have missed it beautifully

unfortunately for you, there are no pictures, and no he doesnt do it to wind me up, he is a disgusting eater. but because i have better manners than him i make my excuses to my mil and leave the house while they eat, the sounds of my running to the bathroom to be sick really would put most people off their dinner. ive had a chat with mil and explained why, so she puts a dinner on a plate for me which is lovely and i take it home to eat later.

so no need for the mocking at all. because i am simply not sitting looking into a disgusting pigs mouth while it eats and spoils my dinner

LetHimHaveIt · 29/12/2021 14:23

And yet you're still clearly not there, bless you.

Yes: the former bothers me. The latter does not. Because they're two different things. I don't enjoy watching people make a pantomime out of drinking, but don't mind when they do it quickly.

Happy to have given you a laugh. I imagine they're fairly thin on the ground, round your way . . .

Anordinarymum · 29/12/2021 14:24

I would make loud slurping gulping noises every time to show him its the sort of thing a child does. Does he behave like this when you go out for a meal etc
And you will marry him ?

Nah......... let someone else get 'the ick'

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 14:28

That is some next level dramatic shit! I'm surprised they invite you!

Right, cos that makes perfect sense 😭😭

Oh no, laughs are definitely not far and few between around here. But I definitely found your choice of words absolutely hilarious and will most likely think of you every time I use that emoji from now on. That's how funny it was.

However, your lack of enthusiasm in general and inability to understand that a child gulping down a boiling hot cup of tea is uhh.. dangerous ..??

Yeah. That's where I drawn the line lol.

Run along now, enjoy your day being miserable 😆👋

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/12/2021 14:30

Tonight I drink the sap of Yggdrasil. Hail Höðr. Hail Asgard!

I do it without the Asgardian Flourish at the end.

Probably because a drink left on the floor as a child would inevitably be kicked over or acquire a coating of animal hair, a flea or a fly within a few moments. Also has to be nuclear hot or ice cold, as a room temperature drink was one that had sat around and would be inherently risky (like the food).

I'm not into merely wetting my lips. Drink and be done - it has to hit the back of the throat.

MusicTeacherSussex · 29/12/2021 14:31

It's not noisy, it's just very very fast!

When we go out for a meal he just gets the waiter to throw his drink directly at his head, most of it usually goes in! If it's from a bottle it's easier but the draught cola can be tricky.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 29/12/2021 14:34

I didn't realise that wasn't normal Blush ugh, yeah I don't sip things, I don't think about needing to drink, it usually gets to the point I have Cotton ball mouth, then I down a drink. I think in my case it's ADHD related as there was a discussion the other day in a support group I'm in, and most of us had issues with regularly drinking, I'm not thirsty so why would I drink sort of thing, the old I can't see it so it doesn't exist.

Ugh yeah Blush

bigbeatmanifesto · 29/12/2021 14:38

We're a family of 'swiggers' over here and I'm embarrassed to say my DH asked me for years why do I drink so fast I'd never noticed it before until we left my Nans one day and he said did you know you, your mum & aunts all drink your tea in like 1-2 rapid gulps?
So I asked my mum did she know she drank like that and she thinks it came from my grandad, behaviours are copied & learnt and my 5yo ds now does it but he's added loud gulping and swallowing, I have no idea where that comes from.
I do it with fizzy drinks too but regret it almost immediately.
I have a friend who drinks the same way and he was like I can't believe there's someone outside of your family who swigs tea like you!
We were destined to be friends I think 😂

Thepineapplemystery · 29/12/2021 14:50

I totally do this! I really struggle to sip drinks and don't enjoy it when I do. I'm worst with water and tea/ coffee (water it's because I'm thirsty, tea and coffee because I don't like them unless really hot) but I also do it with soft drinks and alcohol.

3lovelykids · 29/12/2021 14:55

My son does this. He has Autism
