Downing every drink, every time

I have never met anyone else who does this, my fiance can't sip or drink anything over time.

Every cup of coffee, tea, glass of water or coke, he holds and drinks in one, continual cycle of gulp to swallow, maybe pausing to take a breath halfway through, but not always. He then slams the empty cup down like thor.

AIBU that the normal way to drink most drinks is to have a sip or two and set it aside?

I have tried it myself and it results in hiccups or drowning.

I do this, not the slamming down part but the super quick drinking. I like my hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold, can't drink them room temp or luke warm. If I do 'take my time' I end up chucking the last bit as its not its ideal temp anymore, maybe its that?

KevinTheKoala · 30/12/2021 18:37

I drink fast, I also eat very fast though. I've tried slowing down and it just feels like a ridiculous effort to change something that doesn't actually harm anyone else, it's not like I'm asking anyone else to change their habits and I don't expect them to keep up with me I just am the way I am.

Hanywany · 30/12/2021 18:39

@BabyDubsEverywhere omg I do this I thought I was the only one, I am no longer alone in my drink sucking thingy!!!🙈🤣 my DH always takes the piss about how I suck the glass and my nan always says about how I've done that since i was a baby i dont come up for air either just carry on til I'm red in the face! Deary me😊

I do sip hot drinks though, but my DH drinks them piping hot in about 2 seconds flat, he says he likes it when it burns😱🙈

icedcoffees · 30/12/2021 18:49

DH does this.

He then wonders why he burps all the time Hmm

rocky1914 · 30/12/2021 19:02

@MaybeHeIsMyCat lol yup, definitely couldn't do that hahaha 😄😩🤷‍♀️

ImALittlePea · 30/12/2021 19:05

I do this, most of the time. Always have. My thirst doesn't get quenched otherwise. Sips just don't satisfy it. Gulps, and the more the better, are what do it.

monotonousmum · 30/12/2021 19:11

@LemonMuffins

My DH does this with tea. Leaves it sitting there until its almost too cold to bother with then chugs the whole mug Confused
Mine too, just with tea. It's odd. And his gulping makes so much noise.Angry
Couchbettato · 30/12/2021 19:15

This sets my teeth on edge.

PurplePeculiar · 30/12/2021 19:20

My ex, who was autistic also did this. He's the only person I've ever seen drink this way

Halloweenadoodle · 30/12/2021 19:27

I do this. I very rarely savour drinks... any that i dont drink that instant will probably be thrown away.
I became a source of amusement one year ot octoberfest when a guy from work challenged me to drink a stein faster than him... he lost. I have a bit of a reputation now.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 30/12/2021 19:30

@Hanywany Very pleased to meet another sucker! Grin

Bebethany · 30/12/2021 19:30

I have a colleague that does that and he’s so noisy, slurp, gulp swallow… = yuk!!

gosling24 · 30/12/2021 19:54

The slamming down afterwards is what I think should be your concern. Are you 100% sure this is not some indicator of something such as a bad temper or worse?

CthulusMum · 30/12/2021 20:02

I also do this with all drinks. I am ND also

Lol... nope. Just enthusiastic.

What’s LD? Learning disability??

My husband does this, same with food, literally inhales it. Can’t imagine how you’d enjoy what you’re eating.

His family are all the same, always rushing.

MMMMMaria · 30/12/2021 20:44

Yup, I also drink all drinks very fast 🙈, like Itonlytakesonetree I also have to remember to have a big glass of water when I am drinking alcohol as I drink all drinks very very fast.

The OP isn’t concerned and has no actual AIBU, she just wanted to share this lovable story about her partner
MusicTeacherSussex · 30/12/2021 21:26

Thankyou @GhostCurry and what a great username... I'd love to know the inspiration for it

Yep we wrote this post together as we laugh about it a lot and it gave a few people some mild amusement.

I would suggest making him a coffee then putting it in the microwave for 2mins to bring it back up to 'really' boiling and see whether he can immediately down it in one, that should allow him down, it worked with my OH!

Right, you say that, I did this for his dad the other day, nuked it to volcanic, and down it went. It must be hereditary

Might work. Or he'll be scarred for life from superheated water boiling over his face and mouth.
Deepfriedbrie · 30/12/2021 23:04

I’m a slow-sipper whereas husband and in-laws down drinks (even scalding coffee). They never have a drink with dinner which I can’t get my head around. When I first visited in-laws, I had to get used to being thirsty or making multiple drinks as my glass of water left on the side would be tidied up every five minutes. I think they must have acclimatised to my slower speed as drink is now left alone Grin

Suipigz · 30/12/2021 23:17

Like toddler style yam and slam? Maybe something happened in his childhood and he got stuck at a two year old age of drinking? Or found out he was a superhero/ Demi god?? 😅

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 30/12/2021 23:21

@AnyFucker

I have known a couple of people (men) who have done that over the years

One had disordered eating and was hugely obese. He would add spoonfuls of sugar to white wine then down it in one ! The other just drank very, very quickly .
