Boxing day is a strange day

Does anyone else agree? Are you supposed to try to recreate a watered down christmas day repeat or do things get back to normal? Some people go shopping but with the run up to christmas and shops that's the last thing I feel like doing. I guess a lot of people visit the family members they didn't see yesterday but what do you do if you've got no one to visit? What's everyone else doing? posting for traffic thanks

Not doing much. Watching TV and haven't left the house. Watching the Matrix films as dh and I are going to see the new one at the cinema tomorrow for his birthday.

GaolBhoAlba · 26/12/2021 16:03

I love boxing day. Still a festive feel but more chilled than xmas day. Its one of the few days a year where I dont feel guilty for sitting doing nothing; just eating and watching telly!

DreamerSeven · 26/12/2021 16:07

Stay home, watch films, eat leftovers, that’s about it. Much prefer it to Christmas Day.

AnnaBolina · 26/12/2021 16:09

Boxing Day, we eat Christmas snack foods, watch a film, have bubble and squeak for lunch or dinner, the kids play with their toys... it's a chilled day

LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 16:09

It's OK. A bit like a typical Sunday. EXCEPT nowhere is open - except one costcutter several miles away. I live close to a small market town, and EVERYWHERE is shut, which I think is wonderful.

It's super foggy, raining, 1 degree C temperature, and everywhere looks like Silent fucking Hill. Can't see further than 50-80 feet. So I CBA to even go for a walk tbh, like I would if it was sunny, or even snowing!

Going out tomorrow though. Need some fresh bread, some milk, and some fresh fruit.

shouldistop · 26/12/2021 16:11

My dh went out with his cousins today (Boxing Day tradition for them).
I've just stayed at home with 5yo & 1yo playing with new toys, reading books and watching tv. We always host on Christmas Day so don't have anyone over on Boxing Day and no one has ever invited us to them so it's a quiet day.

Chipsahoy · 26/12/2021 16:12

We open more presents, always save some from wider family. Eat cheese and snacks all day. Kids play with toys, we relax on the sofa. I prefer Boxing Day and Christmas Eve to Christmas Day.

rugbysport · 26/12/2021 16:13

Does anyone else just feel full up from after Christmas dinner yesterday all the way through to the end of Boxing Day?

We haven't done a freak deal today mostly lounges about. I felt really tired today probably from all the food

Benjispruce5 · 26/12/2021 16:13

Long lie-in, big muddy dog walk, leftovers put out, everyone helps themselves, fire on, tv/films. We had guests yesterday and don’t watch tv on 25th so it’s a nice relaxed day today. I never go anywhere near a shop in Boxing Day.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 16:15

I don't really know what I am supposed to be doing today. Whole household off until 4/1 except me-back in work at 8am in the morning. Sad
Starting to get the usual Sunday night feeling. Get my work clothes ready etc

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 26/12/2021 16:15

Woke up at 11am, took a creamy coffee back to bed and spent a few hours reading under a cat. Up at 1pm and got dressed. Helped DD make brownies, did a buffet lunch of cheese and crackers and gammon.
Now back in bed reading (no cat) while DH creates his legendary Bubble and Squeak with all the leftover veg.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 26/12/2021 16:17

Oh I also just got up and helped DD set up her new fairy lights. DS1 and DS2 are back in the world of gaming. DH has bene playing Farming Simulator and now in the kitchen making dinner.

I feel a bit queasy today, either all the rich food or all the Bucks fizz yesterday...

Puffalicious · 26/12/2021 16:17

Opposite for me, our Christmas is quiet just DH and kids (the way I like it) then I host the mahoosive Boxing day party where everyone brings a dish and it's crazy with kids, games and laughter. I'm very, very sad this year as I had a positive lateral flow yesterday morning confirmed by PCR result today. Games, food and drink and kids all sitting sadly as I'm in bed feeling seriously rough. I'm soooooo disappointed and angry!!!

Anyway, hope everyone enjoys it no matter what.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 26/12/2021 16:19

Bored and fed up. Husband works in retail for the first time and he is working today all day. DD(12) stayed up to late last night and has gone for a nap after crying about how UnChristmassy she feels. DD(17) playing new Xbox game upstairs.

Im browsing Mumsnet with a G&T.

Not my usual Boxing Day! Normally we have friends or family round but none today.

gloriousgolden · 26/12/2021 16:19

Usually we go hunting but it's fallen on a Sunday this year so we're just doing xmas day round two 🥂 seen lots of people out on the Boxing Day family walk when I rode the horses this morning.

Ragwort · 26/12/2021 16:20

I went out for a walk pouring with rain just to get some fresh air, came home & watched CTM with my DM, had a nice lunch of leftovers with Bucks Fizz. DH & DS played golf ... lazy afternoon watching a film, about to play a board game or cards ... big buffet of leftovers and then film, more board games or tv. Quite chilled but looking forward to being on my own tomorrow Grin.

Benjispruce5 · 26/12/2021 16:20

Sorry to hear that @Puffalicious and well done for not spreading it about. Get well soon!

RozHuntleysStump · 26/12/2021 16:21

I would have gone to the shops but half of them were shut today so I’ll go tomorrow. I’ve just been cleaning and reading forums on my iPad.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 26/12/2021 16:21

I'm catching up on sleep from the past year. Having not had any proper time off apart from 7 individual days im burnt out and keep having naps when watching tv today

I guess I need it as I don't plan to sleep but I just keep nodding off!

DH is on the PS5 and DS is upstairs gaming with mates online.

The100thHoliday · 26/12/2021 16:22

Sleep, eat leftovers, TV, repeat. I find it incredibly relaxing.

I’ll pretty much do some version of this until New Year’s Day, maybe with a few walks thrown in to get off the sofa and out of my PJs.

Love the ‘no pressure’ bit between Christmas and NYE. HATE NYE with a passion!

Grapewrath · 26/12/2021 16:22

I had a long dog walk then popped to Tesco as we ran out of bread. Came old and made a cooked brunch. Saw dd and her partner who popped on for food.
Just going to chill tonight. I like Boxing Day it’s always nice and chilled

Benjispruce5 · 26/12/2021 16:23

@The100thHoliday me too!

fuckfuckfuck2021 · 26/12/2021 16:23

We've played with the kids stuff cleaned up mess from yesterday and I'm making a buffet tea I'm back to work tomorrow so trying to keep the Christmas spirit but I'm honestly shattered and just want a bath and bed lol

Beachbreak2411 · 26/12/2021 16:24

We always did the same thing on Boxing Day from when I was a child to a few years ago. It was a family.. outdoor activity in a beautiful place. I took my daughter (with a few difficulties) from her first Christmas. Then my brother met his now wife and after a fall out 6 years ago we now no longer do it (we did for over 28 years). Now we don’t even al get together as a family because she hates me. I miss Boxing Day. It’s never going to be the same for me now.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 16:24

Was Tesco open today? I know a lot of the supermarkets had the two days which I think is right TBH.
