Boxing day is a strange day

Does anyone else agree? Are you supposed to try to recreate a watered down christmas day repeat or do things get back to normal? Some people go shopping but with the run up to christmas and shops that's the last thing I feel like doing. I guess a lot of people visit the family members they didn't see yesterday but what do you do if you've got no one to visit? What's everyone else doing? posting for traffic thanks

Got up a bit late, went to the pub for the tractor run with husband, son and stepson. Came home for some small foods. I've just done a 40 minute calisthenics workout (first for several days) and will make a proper dinner a bit later.

Beachbreak2411 · 26/12/2021 16:45
@Beachbreak2411 can’t you still do that without your brother’s family?
My parents won’t without them. (Golden child and his wife is pretty much worshipped as a Godess by my parents!)

Benjispruce5 · 26/12/2021 16:47

Do it without the parents then. Life is too short so rewrite the tradition. I understand as I have a sibling issue too.

ThankGoodnessForTea · 26/12/2021 16:47

I find it boring. I am usually at work (NHS) but switched roles a year ago so I'm no longer working weekends or bank hols (not that I'm complaining about that).

I love the build up to Christmas great but then it's like a massive anti-climax! I went out and bought a few bits for work this morning (yes, that sad) and nipped into Cos*a for a hot chocolate.

Very relaxed day! Now watching 'Paddington' on TV and warming up yesterday leftovers for tea!

GalesThisMorning · 26/12/2021 16:47

Big walk on the beach to clear the cobwebs after yesterday's inactivity and eating. The sun shone and it was lovely. DS 2 has been playing with his toys and watching TV, teenage DS is eating Christmas dinner round 2, Turkey curry is ready for when we want it, there is a pan of mulled cider on the hob and the fire is lit... it's just a day with extra food and no place to be. It's nice.

SilverGlassHare · 26/12/2021 16:48

Boxing Day is the best!. All our guests have gone home and we’re eating goodies, playing with our new toys, drinking booze, watching Encanto, reading our new books, and planning to have cheese and biscuits for dinner. Perfect!

suckingonchillidogs · 26/12/2021 16:49

Boxing Day is my favourite day of the whole year. We've done our Xmas Day duties so its a day of doing just what we want. Had a fry-up, a long walk and just watched Some Like it Hot which I haven't seen for years. The best bit is that Christmas Day is a whole 364 days away!

trilbydoll · 26/12/2021 16:49

We usually do Xmas day Mark 2 with my family but because DD2 has COVID we did alllllllll the presents yesterday over a couple of Zoom calls. We've played loads of board games today, not eaten properly at all, and now kids are watching TV. I've still got ready made roasties and veg (because we were meant to be hosting) so we're having a big meal for tea that will look very similar to yesterday's lunch!

icedcoffees · 26/12/2021 16:50

I absolutely love Boxing Day.

DH and I had a lovely lie-in, he took the dog for a walk and we just enjoyed some peace and quiet at home - watching TV, having naps, eating up the leftovers and just relaxing with no time pressure to do anything or go anywhere.

I actually prefer it to Christmas Day in some ways as there are no pressures to do anything specific. DH is currently at his parents' house and I'm at home with the dog watching TV and debating whether to cook a pizza for tea or not.

Goldbar · 26/12/2021 16:50

Relaxing. Boxing day has the feel of Christmas day but without the frenetism of wrapping, building DC gifts, unwrapping, going for the obligatory Christmas walk and preparing Christmas dinner. Instead, we're all slobbing around, DC has been in front of the TV for large chunks of the day and grazing on leftovers so no cooking. Went for a brief walk but it's miserable here so didn't last long.

Onlyhereforthebiscuits · 26/12/2021 16:51

Having a wardrobe clear out, walking, doing my indoor hobby, reading.

Jacket potato for dinner

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2021 16:51

Usually chilling, eating leftovers washed down with Christmas booze, watching TV, eating chocolates, reading. And a good brisk walk, so afterwards can slob with a clear conscience.
Absolutely no shopping!

I love Boxing Day.

hallouminatus · 26/12/2021 16:51

I've only just learned (and evidently many others don't know) that today is not Boxing Day. Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas Day. So bad news for those who hate Boxing Day and were thinking it would soon be over, but good news if you love it as you still have the whole day to loo forward to.

spiderlight · 26/12/2021 16:51

I could cheerfully have taken down the tree this morning! Everyone else stayed in bed; I got up with the dog and watched 'Call the Midwife' in peace, which was quite nice, but it's been wet and grey here all day and all festive feeling has evaoprated, leaving only clutter and mess and too much sugary food. It was better when DS was younger and we had lots of new toys to play with, but now pretty much all his presents are related to his racing games, so he's been up in his room most of the day. DH and I went for a nice walk with the dog and we have a friend popping in later, but it just feels like a weird wet non-day to me, really!

Moonface123 · 26/12/2021 16:52

l love boxing day, l usually wake up early because l work early shifts, so l lay in bed for a while with a coffee browsing online, then l went for a lovely walk through the woods and fields with my 16 yr old son, fed all our unwanted cakes and biscuits to the birds and ducks at the lake, walked back, cooked fahitas, had a bath, now relaxing as back to work early tomorrow.

PeaceONoeuf · 26/12/2021 16:52

Got up at 10, cleaned, tidied the presents away, activated codes etc from yesterday, par boiled potatoes for tonight’s mini roast and left over crackers. Wrote thank you cards with the kids, found some films to watch. Just a very lovely eating rubbish and faffing around. Also put away Christmas decorations when I could sneak them past dh - I’ve left two trees and put away the random stuff.

venusmay · 26/12/2021 16:53

Spent the day doing crafts and watching TV with the kids. I'm craving two minutes to watch the news or just read a book. Tidied up a million times. Looking forward to when the kids go to bed!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 16:55

Oh in that case I'm working 8-6 on Boxing Day.
AutumnAlmanack · 26/12/2021 16:56

It's been quite a dull day really; very foggy this morning on the dog walk. DH went out to spend some time on his hobby and I did some washing, tidied out my car boot, and walked round the garden. At lunchtime the sun came out and the sky was a beautiful blue, and it was very heart-warming to see some of my bulbs poking their shoots out of the earth! Just about to cook dinner - back to normal stuff - lasagne for him and chicken for me!

Chocoqueen · 26/12/2021 16:57

It depends, but this year we stayed at home in our pj's and played with DD (4 months) and her new toys. When she had a nap this afternoon we watched a film, made a g&t and got out a box of nice chocolates we were given for Christmas.

Hamjamwich · 26/12/2021 16:57

Silly day. Shops are open for sales and very busy but skeleton bus service for the staff and customers and anyone wanting to visit family in hospital or otherwise.

Morethanthis71 · 26/12/2021 16:57

We had Christmas lunch 2, leftovers with a sausage and pancetta plait as the centrepiece and now we are at the Panto after having walked into town. Oh yes we did. Caught up on Corrie and Call The Midwife and read my Christmas present. DInner will be a snacky tea. More walking on the cards tomorrow and another no spend day I hope.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2021 16:58

We don't like going anywhere or doing anything on Boxing Day. We are so busy in the run up to Christmas, and on Christmas Day itself, that a long lie in and nothing to do but sit in our house as a family of 4, eat and drink what we like, ignoring the mess from yesterday, watch a film later etc, sounds like absolute bliss. I love it, and I've always hated any extended family gatherings on Boxing Day and resented them all! Once today's rest and relaxation is over I'm up for anything. But today is sacred rest time.

BrokenCopper · 26/12/2021 16:58

Netflix, Kids playing multilayer games, play with their presents, eat junk food all day. Once ay year so it's OK.

Hamjamwich · 26/12/2021 16:59

And school not back until 10 January which is a massive pain as work starts back on 4th
