Boxing day is a strange day

Does anyone else agree? Are you supposed to try to recreate a watered down christmas day repeat or do things get back to normal? Some people go shopping but with the run up to christmas and shops that's the last thing I feel like doing. I guess a lot of people visit the family members they didn't see yesterday but what do you do if you've got no one to visit? What's everyone else doing? posting for traffic thanks

I love Boxing Day. There is never time to go for a long walk on Christmas Day so we tend to do it on Boxing Day. And it's a good day catch up with family and friends we couldn't get to see on Christmas Day.

It's a good day to invite neighbours or friends over for a drink with none of the pressures of Christmas Day. Even the catering is easy. We eat cold turkey with ham, we make bubble and squeak made from leftover veg from Christmas Day. We make a fresh batch of stuffing and have pickles and beetroot, salad and coleslaw, crusty bread. We'll have a trifle or a nice cheesecake or something. It's laid back and fun and relaxed.

I refuse to go shopping or do anything else on Boxing Day that I can do on every other normal day of the year. Christmas is over quickly enough as it is - why the rust to get back into the shops? Ho desperate for a bargain must you be that you can't wait unti the 27th?

Sometimes the boys in the family go to the football on Boxing Day. Or we might go to a nice country pub. But it's basically a day for family and friends based at home.

We always go out for a curry on Boxing Day, used to be preceded by the Panto but DD is too old now. I like Boxing Day, still Christmassy but none of the same expectations. I’ve got 4 more days off too, so planning some days out too (while we still can).

Minniem2020 · 26/12/2021 17:27

I spent the morning putting pressies away while ds played with his new toys. Short walk this afternoon as the weather is awful, called into the in-laws for half an hour now we're back home watching a film and making bubble and squeak

This is where Christmas in summer comes into its own.

We don’t have any set traditions for Boxing Day, but there’s always something going on.

We spent this one down at the river by my uncle’s farm with lots of extended family.

Then came home and sat on the deck with a gin & tonic, and then had a BBQ with more chilling on the deck, what with just having had the longest day here.

See: NYE also being better in summer.

As it's Boxing Day I made a donation to the Hunt Saboteurs Association, so they can continue to help protect our wildlife on hunt days. Fx hunting with dogs will be completely outlawed one day soon (including so called 'trail hunting') so the sabs can finally relax and enjoy their boxing days like the rest of us.

A lovely laid back day - usually playing new board games, video games, watching films, no formal meals just grazing.

Nidan2Sandan · 26/12/2021 17:33

Pre-covid we always held a big party on boxing day. Its quieter now, partly covid, partly because most of the usual guests no longer live locally.

So, now it's just a chance to be lazy. We got up around 10am. I cleaned the kitchen from the Christmas chaos, fed the cats etc. When DH got up I hoovered. We then collapsed on the sofa watching tv and eating and drinking. Went for a nap and some "quality time" with DH Xmas Wink whilst the kids all did their own thing.

Am now showered, in PJs and drinking wine whilst watching DD9 play on the xbox. Might watch a movie later.

underneaththeash · 26/12/2021 17:33

I like it too. We always go for a walk and then have a buffet and few games and a film.

More relatives arrive 27th, so it's a quiet day.

LoveaStatementNap · 26/12/2021 17:34

Sales shopping and self-reflecting mostly!

RoyalFamilyFan · 26/12/2021 17:35

It is the Boxing Day shoots. Go out and shoot innocent wildlife for fun.

Love Boxing Day. Just accept it for what it is, rather than trying to make it into something it's not.

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 26/12/2021 17:40

It depends. From what I can gather sometimes it's an afterthought or odd or a bit nothingy. Sometimes it's valuable downtime on one's own or with the family. Sometimes it's a planned trip or a visit to relations etc. Sometimes there's an annual family/friend event on Boxing Day. Some people I know go on holiday on Boxing Day most years or to the panto. Some people work every Boxing Day or go shopping.

We've decided to have a personal-work day today, so we're doing laundry, banking, correspondence, tidying up etc. May put Carols From Kings on in a minute. I'm in a LiveChat with a utilities company at the moment Smile. Although the way it is going, it seems that the agent may be a bit sozzled Confused.

But I'm not bored or blah or nothingy today, personally. Are you OP? Why is that? How can you change your Boxing Day experience for next year?

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 17:42

My WH Smith Week to View calendar states 'Boxing Day on today's date and says tomorrow and Tuesday are Bank Holidays in UK/R. Ireland.

dementedpixie · 26/12/2021 17:44

Monday and Tuesday are substitute bank holidays for Christmas and Boxing day being at the weekend

Yes I thought as much, but a PP said that Boxing day was the first weekday after Christmas so was curious as to what the calendar said. I'm working Monday and Tuesday and get my Bank Holidays another time. Sad
whenwillthemadnessend · 26/12/2021 17:47

Tidied Xmas mess
Took dog for a decent walk
Kids slept late (teens)
Set new x box up
Played mario cart with dd
Ds on new Xbox
About to eat cold
Meats and chips
The tv and booze
Like boxing day More chilled

itsgoodtobehome · 26/12/2021 17:47

Boxing Day is the best day in my opinion. No hype, no expectations. There is still loads of food to get through, but it's all already cooked. Just a day to chill out and enjoy all the gifts you got yesterday. Perfect. Much prefer it to Christmas Day.

MsFestiveReindeer · 26/12/2021 17:48

We go to mil's house on boxing day every year. She provides a huge buffet and forces giant portions on everybody, having not considered any dietary requirements before she cooked (dd2 is vegetarian, all she could eat was chips). I hate boxing day.

user1471542288 · 26/12/2021 17:52

If we’re not meeting up with family it’s a walk along the seafront. It used to be Hove to Brighton, but we moved to Hampshire earlier this year so today it was Southsea to Portsmouth - we even got sunshine!

Nc123 · 26/12/2021 17:52

I love Boxing Day - no pressure, nowhere to be. We usually have a walk out, eat leftovers and enjoy our Christmas presents!

UsernameInTheTown · 26/12/2021 17:53

Walk dog, eat cheese, slob.

Me too! In fact I just doubled it after reading this thread.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/12/2021 18:00

Was planning a lazy day but looked for PCR tests and found local site .
DH is positive so needed a follow up, I have symptoms ( but cannot get a LFT for love nor money and I work in NHS )

So we drove down, tested , straight home (as it states . No pootling off to the shops , DH is isolating ) My DS is also positive .
So far only DD is bearing up !

I was going to do our Boxing Day Tradition (homemade pizza) but decided to do a Nigel Slater and poke about in the fridge .
Had Quorn roast , new potatoes , cauliflower cheese and some sprouts ( I bought a big bag of them we'll be eating them in March )

Going to sort out the bins then faff about till Eastenders is on.

Anystarinthesky · 26/12/2021 18:02

I have had a relaxing day binge watching 'Ted Lasso'.

Having an easy tea of yesterday's leftovers.
