Don’t really see partners mum since covid as lives a couple of hours away and she never travels . Previously it was small talk every few months . She came for Christmas lunch and this was my present . Aibu in thinking she is far shaming me ? When ever she sees her slightly overweight son she makes comments about how he looks pregnant . I used to run a lot don’t now .

I'd send it back to her with a little note written by her son.

ddl1 · 26/12/2021 11:03

At best, it's a very 'coarse' sort of present - who would keep something like that in their living room? At worst, it could be a dig. I'm usually a believer in 'not looking a gift horse in the mouth', but this is a truly awful present! Give it to the charity shop - maybe someone will want it! Or you actually want a cushion, cover it.

rwalker · 26/12/2021 11:05

sound like you have the type of relationship where you could joke with each other like this .

She's being a twat bin it.

VividImaginationAgain · 26/12/2021 11:07

I’m probably over sensitive but if someone gave me that for Christmas they would no longer be part of my life. I would bin her with the cushion.

BornOnTwelfthNight · 26/12/2021 11:09

I’d take that as a dig as well! Not remotely funny.
The fact that she comments on your dps weight as well, shows that she a judgmental arse and clearly has issues and opinions regarding other peoples weight…..she’s not just singled you out. So I guess that is something!

But still incredibly rude though, I Chuck it in the bin!

TrashyPanda · 26/12/2021 11:09

Why give it to a charity shop?

Can you think of anyone who would buy this (apart from bitchy MIL)?

Roselilly36 · 26/12/2021 11:11

Very unkind, no wonder you're offended. Bin it. Look out for a suitable gift for her next year.

JohnSmithDrive · 26/12/2021 11:12

@Shuffleuplove

Gloves are off OP! You need to send her this for her birthday…
OP's cushion is the oddest thing, it's not even an attractive cushion if you get past the slogan. At least this one isn't an awful decorative item Grin
GreetingsAndSalutations · 26/12/2021 11:15

She’d be getting that back next year for her Christmas. Rude cow. It wouldn’t even be mean of you either- it’s clearly to her taste/humour after all.

Shortpoet · 26/12/2021 11:18

With stuff like that I wonder about all the people involved:

Someone had the initial thought for the “hilarious” design and sketched it.
Someone took that design and created a plan to produce it,
Someone chose and sourced the fabric and buttons,
Someone in a factory had the slogan printed and cut the fabric for a run of these,
Someone stitched it together,
Someone packaged it
Someone added it to a catalogue of products,
Someone stocked it in their shop,
Someone bought it.

Did no-one at any point think, “this is a bit shit?

Catflapkitkat · 26/12/2021 11:18

It's the sort of funky pigeon card I would send to my best friend and she would send to me as we are always moaning about 'doing something' but end up making excuses. But wouldn't risk it with anyone else. Giving her the benefit of the doubt it could be the word jogging. She knew you ran and bow you don't. But it's risky. And really naff on a cushion

StFrancisdeCompostela · 26/12/2021 11:19

Super rude! What a crabby cow!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2021 11:20

Get her this for her birthday.

Is this present having a dig at me
AppleKatie · 26/12/2021 11:21

If you didn’t open it immediately laugh and get the joke it was a dig. There is a very limited sphere of human relationships where a present like this would be acceptable.

It left you feeling confused and wondering if it was a dig. Ergo it was at best a crass mistake gag gift and at worst a passive aggressive horrible present.

I agree gloves are off and she would be getting a passive aggressive cushion from me in a cutesy pattern for the next ten years 😂

No, cos it was probably done by a 9 year old in a Chinese sweat shop.
Ourlady · 26/12/2021 11:23

Well she's a horror. I wouldn't be inviting her back...ever!

BringUsSomeFrigginPudding · 26/12/2021 11:23

Weird. Ordinarily, I'd give the benefit of the doubt, though I'd not appreciate it and would feel uncomfortable! That's the sort of thing you buy for yourself if you have terrible taste but never give as a gift unless you are absolutely certain it's something the recipient will find hilarious.

But after reading that she says a man looks pregnant when he's gained weight... Yeah, I think you might be right that it's a dig at you! I'd get rid of the cushion immediately and be very wary of her for the foreseeable future. At worst, she insulted you; at best, she has bad taste in gifts!

HollyChristmas · 26/12/2021 11:24

I have a mil that fat shames everyone over a size 12 . I try to remain as low contact as possible . When I phone she always mentions how huge her granddaughter is ( had a baby about 8 months ago ) yet was happy to be collected by her on Christmas eve , and being entertained by her for 2 days . I dare say she will be moaning about her once she's back home.

Shortpoet · 26/12/2021 11:26

Well yes the people making it would have made what they were told.
I was wondering more about the people who designed and stocked it.

But then they were proved right because MIL bought it proving there is a market for this crap, so they’ll make more next year.

StellaGibson118 · 26/12/2021 11:32

It's not funny and the cushion is ugly too, not sure which would offend me more.

StellaGibson118 · 26/12/2021 11:33

@TrashyPanda

Personally wouldn't want anyone else to receive it and would recover it if it were me
BobLemon · 26/12/2021 11:34

Very large parts of my family would think this is fine.

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 26/12/2021 11:35

Re-gift it right back to her for her birthday.

Fuck the old cow.

PodgyMcPodgerson · 26/12/2021 11:36

Het a cushion made with 'I'm A Cunt' on it and give it to her for Mothers Day

LadyCatStark · 26/12/2021 11:36

It doesn’t really matter if it’s having a dog at you or not, it’s a hideous present! On the plus side, if you save the photo (not the cushion, that can go in the bin!) you’ll win the worst Christmas present threads for years to come!
