Don’t really see partners mum since covid as lives a couple of hours away and she never travels . Previously it was small talk every few months . She came for Christmas lunch and this was my present . Aibu in thinking she is far shaming me ? When ever she sees her slightly overweight son she makes comments about how he looks pregnant . I used to run a lot don’t now .

Straight to the bin as soon as she's gone

Or regift it to her next year. If she calls you out just pretend you can't remember getting it from her but you thought she'd really like it

time2tork · 26/12/2021 11:37

Omg. What the fuck did you do when you opened that?

I don't think anyone would read that and say "what a lovely gift, she'll like this".

It's not even funny..

She's being a dick.

PodgyMcPodgerson · 26/12/2021 11:37

*get as well!

dustandfluf · 26/12/2021 11:38

@Missey85

Sorry but that's hilarious! Not everything is personal you know?
Is it? I don't even get the joke..
Topseyt · 26/12/2021 11:41

I'm not easily offended by gifts, but yes, that one would enrage and hurt me.

I hope you snuck it into her bag for her return journey, with a note in saying how hurt you were and how she needn't expect another invitation.

You don't need to have much contact with her, surely, so keep it to a minimum.

shinynewapple21 · 26/12/2021 11:41

I think it's a strange present . I'm not one to assume the worst of someone so I I would think it's probably just misjudged . There are a lot of slogan things you get on mugs, cards etc eg a balanced diet a piece of cake in each hand , exercise being a walk to the fridge etc but you do need to know the recipient well and have a good relationship with them . I think a cushion with a slogan like this is strange .

blisstwins · 26/12/2021 11:44

@ChipButtyCurrySauce

Yeah she's being rude! That would be going straight to the charity shop!
No…just bin it. Awful.
cushioncovers · 26/12/2021 11:45

Burn it

3scape · 26/12/2021 11:48

Yup. Burn it.

LuluBlakey1 · 26/12/2021 11:50

@Missey85

Sorry but that's hilarious! Not everything is personal you know?
Why are you sorry? For having a crass sense of humour?
supergloo · 26/12/2021 11:52

I'd burn it too.

OhGiveUp · 26/12/2021 11:52

I would have called the dog over with a ' oh look Rover, a lovely new chewy for you ' and let the dog take care of it.
While the M.I.L choked on her mince pie.

Tal45 · 26/12/2021 11:55

It's basically saying you gave up running because you were too fat. I'd take the insulting cover off, get some nice material and make a nice new cover for it.

StellaGibson118 · 26/12/2021 11:58

For me it's the HUGE number of possible presents she could have got that were not this, that even could have still been cheeky, but she chose this.

5thHelena · 26/12/2021 11:59

Ouch! That would have gone straight on the fire. Horrible

LuluBlakey1 · 26/12/2021 11:59

Post it back with a note that says 'This was left at our house yesterday. Think it must be yours.'

LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 12:02

@Welshlavalove YANBU.

It's horrible, and not even close to funny.

Must have been commissioned by a middle aged man. They think they're hilarious, and are often in tears laughing at their own (unfunny) 'jokes.'

GaolBhoAlba · 26/12/2021 12:04

Horrible 'gift'. What an oul stick she must be!

PodgyMcPodgerson · 26/12/2021 12:07

@Missey85
1979 called...they want their sense of humour back

LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 12:07

I just noticed it was from your Mother In Law. Why does she hate you? Is she one of these dreadful MILs, who despise the fact that their precious boy loves another woman more than he loves her?

disclaimer, not ALL MILS are like this... Although... mothers of sons seem to be more likely to be nasty/catty/spiteful towards the daughter in laws, than mothers of daughters are to son-in-laws... AGAIN, not all...

LetHimHaveIt · 26/12/2021 12:09

I have a peculiar hatred of homeware with slogans: fridge magnets; cups; champagne flutes; wall hangings - whatever. But that takes the fucking biscuit. It's hideous independent of the crass stitching. You're not being humourless at all - I can't even begin to imagine how low the comedy bar would have to be for a person who found that funny.

PodgyMcPodgerson · 26/12/2021 12:12

OP never fear you might get a 'Live Love Laugh' glitter encrusted wine glass for your birthday

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 26/12/2021 12:12

I find slogan cushions hilarious (am v immature). Would I gift one to someone? NO WAY.

Is it at least comfy, or useful as a lap rest for a tablet or something?

ChristmasCrackered · 26/12/2021 12:13

I’d have been tempted to pick it up with the used wrapping paper/ used Christmas crackers and just binned it in front of her without saying anything.

Nanny0gg · 26/12/2021 12:14

@Missey85

Sorry but that's hilarious! Not everything is personal you know?
Wow! It's not witty or funny. Let alone 'hilarious'

I know everyone has their own sense of humour but there's usually some sort of recognised basis for it even if others don't share it.

There definitely isn't one here.
