AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 09:39

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Fact is that someone who has said and done what he has, and there's one hell of a list.

Imo is a terrible choice to front s prog that is primetime and definitely family viewing type thing.

And I can't really understand anyone who thinks otherwise.

Mind you I saw that bloke who wrote slash her face (can't remember exact wording) in a lads mag ages ago. Presenting a quiz show so whatever.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 01/12/2021 07:25

I just realised that now my FIL has passed away I don't know anyone IRL who admits to paying the BBC the licence fee.

Since everyone watches Netflix or Sky Sport, why should they?

Not to fund this shite.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2021 09:41

Hers was a much nastier insult that sought to deny him personhood.

Well that's certainly a fucking bonkers unique take on nepotism @Hont1986.😂😂😂 And AFAIK, the only person mentioned on this thread who was antisemitic towards GC was Giles Coren himself.

Samcro · 01/12/2021 09:58

@StoneofDestiny

How anybody can defend a racist, misogynistic, supercilious, talentless and cruel person is beyond me. By rejoicing at the death of a young person he was hurting only her grieving family and friends. Warped behaviour.

As for his seedy and creepy writings ................... something wrong in his head.

agree yet the op defends Frankie Boil.
StoneofDestiny · 01/12/2021 10:37

agree
yet the op defends Frankie Boil

Its Coren the thread was about to begin with - but since Boyle has been mentioned, he was in fact pulled off his show and TV for a while as I recall.
Coren has not suffered any consequences at all and that is very puzzling.
I don't read the guy at all - but have read about him in various publications, enough to know he cones across as odious and offensive in the extreme. I did watch the programme on Iceland last night however and can see he brought no talent to the table at all. Can't understand him being in that role. I won't watch again.

KentishTowner · 01/12/2021 11:06

@TooBigForMyBoots I totally agree. It's very odd that some people are leaping to defend Giles' actions as being innocuous compared to what Dawn said about him on Twitter, and to argue that she was trying to "deny him personhood". FFS Maybe there are a few Coren sock-puppets in circulation. There are always people - and depressingly, in my experience they are usually women - who leap to defend white male oppressors every time there is a threat to the status quo established by the patriarchy.

I do think that as license payers we should be able to demand that the BBC must expect presenters of family programmes to treat other people with respect, and Giles has so clearly fallen short of that on multiple occasions and has never apologised. If Fiona Bruce had gleefully celebrated the death of a young journalist, and was revealed to have sent messages to people calling them "rat faced child molesting cunts" would she have any credibility as the presenter of Question Time or The Antiques Roadshow? Why does Giles Coren always get second, and third and fourth chances? He is a terrible role model and a terrible example of privilegeand toxic masculinity - that some people can get away with anything providing they have the right connections, or rather that their father did.

[I appreciate that many people disagree with my opinions on Frankie Boyle and that comedians should not be censored when they are on stage. A lot of comedy is in extremely bad taste and I don't think there would be any comedy, or at least any funny comedy, if every topic that offended anyone were outlawed. The type of warm diahhrea served up by Michael McIntire would be even more ubiquitous. Is there any evidence that Frankie Boyle has been sending abusive direct messages or Tweets to anyone in a personal capacity as Giles has done on many occasions? On Louis Theroux's lockdown interview I thought Frankie Boyle came across as being rather contemplative and mild, although I agree he should have asked him about the Harvey Price incident.]

BonnesVacances · 01/12/2021 11:07

@Justcallmebebes

Well you've just handed him a heap of free advertising on a plate.

I will definitely make a point of watching it now. Thanks

You read the OP and that's your response? Weird! Confused

DontBeCatty · 01/12/2021 11:21

I agree but it makes his refusal to acknowledge or apologise for his disgusting ‘joke’ about a disabled child being a potential rapist EVEN worse. The guy knows exactly what he is doing and, presumably, is ok with it. That’s why I find people like him and Giles Conrad worse than more obviously nasty people who don’t give a shit but don’t pretend to,

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 11:39

I was having a scroll through Twitter where there is a lot of anti-Giles sentiment e.g. United Artists tweeted about the new series of Amazing Hotels yesterday but got so many negative tweets in response that they first of all changed the photo so that it didn’t include Giles Coren, and then just tweeted about the programme. And then they removed the tweet altogether.

Also while they were filming the final episode of Amazing Hotels at the Lanesborough someone graffitied on a door in protest/tribute to Dawn.

I dont like Giles Coren although I used to find him funny in the past. However I’m afraid I think the OP is a hypocrite if she likes Frankie Boyle who has said things at least as bad as GC.

LadyLyndon · 01/12/2021 11:48

I belong to the Oscar Wilde school of thought whereby the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. Giles courts controversy, he says outrageous things to get a reaction and delights in shocking people.

I spent two hours 1-2-1 with him, for the record. We discussed many things.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 01/12/2021 12:08

Is anyone else quietly surprised we have managed to fill nearly 9 pages talking about this tedious little non-entity?

KentishTowner · 01/12/2021 12:48

@PlanktonsComputerWife Not really, this is MN! There are pages and pages on almost any topic you can think of.

e.g. This one from 2017 has 341 comments.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3083323-giles-coren-aibu-to-want-to-punch-him-in-the-face

e.g. This one from July 2021 has 1,000 comments
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4301942--to-ask-why-Giles-Coren-hasn-t-been-cancelled-yet

I think GC makes a lot of people angry, and the moral and ethical responsibilities of broadcasters and those people who work in media and financial gain from tax payers/license fee contributions is an interesting topic.

mustlovegin · 01/12/2021 12:55

I was having a scroll through Twitter where there is a lot of anti-Giles sentiment

So what? There will be lots of people who support him. Pretty much like anything else in life - some will like them, some won't

mustlovegin · 01/12/2021 12:56

financial gain from tax payers/license fee contributions is an interesting topic

People who like him pay the license too

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 13:20

@mustlovegin Just because people might disagree doesn’t mean that they can’t discuss it. Isn’t that what Twitter and MN are for? I just said that the majority of sentiment on Twitter and MN seems to be very anti-GC. I can’t see any threads in support of him or if they are they are very old and very short. You seem pretty keen to shut down any debate about this. I had a quick scroll through the other thread and I see you accused a prolific poster @RaquelOak who posted lots of links and screen grabs of having “stirred up enough muck”. It seems highly ironic that the people shouting loudest about the evils of cancel culture are the ones who are keenest to shut down debate.

mustlovegin · 01/12/2021 13:29

No, you won't see any as most MN posters are very left wing hence we are in echo chamber territory.

Yes, I'm against cancel culture, which I think your OP is trying to achieve i.e. why hasn't he been cancelled yet? etc. I don't want to shut down debate

mustlovegin · 01/12/2021 13:30

And I've said this topic has been done to death, so try to keep up

LittleGwyneth · 01/12/2021 13:42

Thing is, Twitter is not real life. The vast majority of people didn't hear about this story and won't be especially interested in hearing it now. He's a very good presenter, which is all most people care about.

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 13:57

@LittleGwyneth I agree with you that Twitter is not real life. What about MN though? That seems more like real life. If people do like Giles Coren, despite the fact he has mocked someone’s death and done other spiteful things then why aren’t there lots of people defending him and posting threads about how great he is? I don’t agree with you that he’s a very good presenter. I think Monica is, but he is rather sneering. I’d prefer someone younger, handsomer and taller (but that is just my type). Also I don’t think he actually does that much TV, apart from the Amazing Hotels series, which was already filming when he tweeted about Dawn. So maybe he’s being quietly cancelled, rather than immediately fired.

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 13:59

@mustlovegin

I don't want to shut down debate. Isn’t saying “you’ve already stirred up enough muck” (negative things about Giles) to another poster an attempt to shut down debate though?

No it hasn't. I may, one day, tire of slagging off the pissy wee fuckwit but in the meantime I will continue to read and post on threads about him.Grin
KentishTowner · 01/12/2021 14:10

@mustlovegin

And I've said this topic has been done to death

Why are you still here discussing it then? You also posted on a previous Giles Coren thread too. If it's so tedious and boring and repetitive, why do you still feel the need to discuss it?

Alicetheowl · 01/12/2021 14:48

I don't always agree with GC, but I find some of his writing amusing. A bit surprised about all this business about him being privileged. I mean, yes, he went to private school, but his father was from a working class background, worked all his life, and apparently his mother was a consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, so worked for the NHS. So if he knew his grandparents, and heard his mother talk about her job, he's not exactly removed from real life in the way the average upper class person would be.
