AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Whilst the conversation has moved on, I very much enjoy the show.

I adore Monica. She gets stuck into every task, respects every professional she meets and earns their respect in return.

Giles on the other hand comes across as a bit of a numpty. Slapdash and half hearted in the tasks he's given. I suspect infuriating to be around.

Yes that’s my impression too.

I think he is privileged as he went to Westminster, which is one of the most elite public schools, and every column he writes is basically about how privileged he is and then sneers at everyone else is a total pleb. He can sometimes be quite funny. I used to quite like his coumns.

But I have found all the backlash following him celebrating Dawn Foster's death and also the revival of the criticism of his bad sex scene writing very funny indeed. Especially the idea that he's so sensitive to any perceived criticism, however slight. He must absolutely hate the idea that he's become a laughing stock. I expect he is puching walls and smashing mobile phones across Kentish Town/the world's five star hotels. And it's fun to discuss and dissect it on Mumsnet. What #lols! Wink

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 16:12

@dannydyerismydad I agree with you. Giles Coren is definitely the weak link in the show. In the few episodes I’ve seen he comes across as though he’s belittling and sneering at the staff, whereas Monica always seems really interested and respectful. Maybe it’s because she’s actually experienced the gruelling demands of working in service at Michelin star restaurants whereas Giles is just a critic so it’s all a bit of a joke to him. His contributions remind me a bit of the way he behaved in the F Word many years ago, after which Gordon Ramsay called him a “pompous prick”:

I think he is more to be pitied than laughed at.

He knows that too which is why he is not quite right.

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2021 16:15

but we all pay our TV license fee

don't watch live tv and don't pay the abc wages, we don't all pay in and some have chosen not to do so

TheElvishQueen · 01/12/2021 16:27

Monica comes from a humble background . I think she doesn’t see herself as special and superior. She has worked bloody hard to get where she is now. She doesn’t have airs and graces and isn’t a snob. He is, unfortunately.

KentishTowner · 01/12/2021 16:45

@WomanWithDiamondEarring

What do you mean he is more to be pitied than laughed at? Why? He has such an ubiquitous media career, he received an excellent education, he has lots of money, a lovely wife and children, a comfortable home and a second home in the country ... Why is he to be pitied?

dannydyerismydad · 01/12/2021 17:11

If we didn't have smarmy Giles as the sidekick of magnificent Monica, we'd no doubt get landed with SHOUTY Gregg. So. Small mercies.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 01/12/2021 17:14

He had an expensive education rather than an excellent one, surely, judging from the results!

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 17:23

I want to pay for my license fee. I love the BBC. I watch the BBC News every day and my children love CBeebies. They have the best drama and I love the documentaries. I just don’t want my license payer’s fee to fund the salary of someone who mocks the premature death of a young woman. For me that is an unacceptable line that was crossed and I am angry and am going to speak out about it.

I think if the BBC want someone to ham about with Monica they could get someone like Alan Carr who is fun and funny, but not so nasty and cruel. Also Giles Coren is in his 50s. He’s too old for the Young Turk act. It’s sad and pathetic.

LampLighter414 · 01/12/2021 17:31

I like him

mustlovegin · 01/12/2021 17:34

He’s too old

Have you heard of the word 'ageism' OP? You've mentioned his age twice already. You're not coming across as the good person you think you are

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 17:48

@mustlovegin

I actually said “He’s too old for the Young Turk act”. It’s like the reverse of what I say to my 7 year old: “You’re too old to make such a fuss about sharing with your sister”. I don’t find a 50 year old man pratting around very attractive. Call me ageist if you like. I just wanted to check that you still think laughing at the death of a 33 year old woman and wishing she went “to hell where she belongs” is perfectly acceptable.

Also, I thought you were bored of these repetitive GC threads, and yet here you are again, defending the vindictive silver spooner…

OP posts:
FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 17:49
  • I mean the same, not the reverse.

I never said that.

I'm against cancel culture though.

I just don’t want my license payer’s fee to fund the salary of someone who mocks

Also, do you understand that you are not the only person funding the BBC and other equally deserving fee payers may want to see him on the show? Can you grasp this concept?

Complain all you like, however. I'm not going to 'shut down debate'

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2021 17:59

But he is too old to be a Young Turk. He's a middle aged, mediocre, media boke. Ageism? Catch yerself on @mustlovegin.😂

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 19:01

He reminds me of a creepy uncle. Please note @mustlovegin I did not say that he reminds me of a creepy old uncle. Grin

I find it baffling that people say rhey like him. Why? What are his appealing points?

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2021 20:56

@PlanktonsComputerWife

He had an expensive education rather than an excellent one, surely, judging from the results!
He is walking proof that money can't buy you class or talent.
KentishTowner · 01/12/2021 21:00

@A580Hojas Beats me. I read a thread on Tattle on which someone had posted lots of different photos of Giles Coren with other celebrities, and it suggested that he was lying about being 5 ft 9 and that actually he is shorter than that. Maybe some people fancy angry men who resemble weasles (please note @mustlovegin that I did not call him an old, short, angry man who resembles a weasle.)

Esther Walker, his wife, wrote an article for the Daily Mail in which she said she married him for his 5 bedroom house in North London (it is a nice house and I know that as I live nearby):

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3447188/Marry-man-house-Love-Money-No-s-new-way-pick-husband-s-bit-unconventional.html

FlirtyKirti · 01/12/2021 23:10

He’s a complete scrote. I marvel that anyone can find him attractive, especially after the Dawn Foster Tweets. I really hope this series of Amazing Hotels is his last.

Changechangychange · 02/12/2021 00:09

@KentishTowner wow that article is um, interesting Confused

I am going to assume it is just click bait, and she and a DM editor sat down together and made it all up to get a reaction. But even if it’s a load of rubbish, it still must be quite humiliating for him to have her tell a national newspaper that she only married him for his money.

Naughtynovembertree · 02/12/2021 07:16

The bbc also has that nasty Boyle man on the pay roll, making fun of people with downs syndrome, makes me absolutely sick.

Also Jimmy carr.
