AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Yes, I gather Pointless at least is compulsory in care homes.It used to boom out of every room in my late DM's home and that's my main association with it now.

Giles Coren is a little too pleased with himself and doesn't waste time on reflection. I think that's the most positive thing I can say.

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:33

@Samcro Frankie Boyle is a comedian. I’ve actually been to some of his stand up and I think he’s brilliant. But you know what you’re going to get. I think Giles Coren publicly mocking a real woman’s death on Twitter and then popping up on prime time to prat about in hotels is horrendous. His Tweets weren’t part of a comedy routine, they were spiteful and vindictive. Dawn Foster couldn’t respond because she was dead. I think we should expect more of people who are on TV on a prime time BBC show that is funded at the license payer’s expense.

So it's OK to be seriously offensive about the disabled provided you're doing it for laughs? That's disgusting.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 30/11/2021 11:35

Piers Morgan wasn't sacked though was he? He walked out / flounced off mid-interview and didn't return.

If he was a comedian it would be ok? What did she say about him?

so its ok to mock disabled people if your a
"comedian"
very funny not.

This , I’m no fan of Giles Coren ( or frankie Boyle) but seriously you need to take a good look at yourself and what you find acceptable .
FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:40

@SoupDragon Sorry, but I do think different rules apply for comedy. I like really dark comedy like Bill Burr and Dave Chappell. I don’t think there should be any restrictions on what people should and shouldn’t say on stage in comedy.

But I think this is different. This is mocking someone’s premature death on Twitter. It wasn’t comedy or anything to do with him professionally. It was pure vitriol. She touched a nerve by rightly accusing him of nepotism and he savaged her after her death.

Giles should try getting a job on his own merits - he wouldn't. These TV dynasties of the talentless really piss me off. And I'm looking at you too Vic.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/11/2021 11:45

I've known people who made my (and a lot of other people's) life hell who subsequently died and my reaction was "Good, the world is a better place without you" but Twitter probably isn't the best place to have put that thought.

Aside from that, I like Giles Coren so thanks for the program heads up.

SpangleWhorl · 30/11/2021 11:52

'Dynasties of the Talentless' - ain't that the truth. You just know when you see a photograph of some perfectly average young person 'modelling' or having a go at photography, 'influencing', singing or writing a column, you'll probably spot a surname like Law, Beckham, Ross, Clarkson, Willis, Smith ...

I agree.

What did she say about him? I can't remember exactly and haven't looked it up, so stand to be corrected, but basically she said or implied that he was only where he was because of his dad.
Which is not quite on the same level as wishing someone who has just died to hell.

so mocking disabled people is fine....when is suits you?

TheMarzipanDildo · 30/11/2021 11:56

Let’s not bring Victoria into this, I have a crush on her.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 30/11/2021 12:01

David Starkey was brilliant on Question Time once- he told them all baldly they were all where they were through nepotism-- Dimbleby, either Victoria or Giles Coren, Shirley Williams.

They did not appreciate having this pointed out to them one little bit.

Needdoughnuts · 30/11/2021 12:13

Victoria is a goddess! Love her on Only Connect. She's an international poker player which nothing to do with being Alan's daughter ffs.

MorningStarling · 30/11/2021 12:22

Has Victoria Coren publicly spoken out about Giles though? I don't recall her doing so but may have missed it. By not speaking out about something to an extent you become complicit.

It's easier to become an "international poker player" when you're not having to work a real job for a living, your family money acts as a safety net and your name garners media attention thus attracting sponsorship. Yes she has to have skill to be a poker player but she was born into the ideal situation to exploit it.

KentishTowner · 30/11/2021 12:40

I can't bear Giles Coren. There have been several MN threads about him before. I started one a few weeks ago about his bad sex writing which caused much hilarity and bafflement about the comparison between a penis and a shower spraying around a bath.

KentishTowner · 30/11/2021 12:43

@IntermittentParps

Dawn Foster had the temerity to suggest that Giles Coren had only got where he is today because of nepotism in the media. In 2018 she said, "Giles Coren a prime example of how the “if I’ve heard of yer da, I don’t need to hear from you” rule holds for almost every man bar Jesus." Then in the summer of 2020 she died suddenly at the age of 33, so ... he Tweeted her telling her to burn in hell and then another one an hour later laughing at her death.

Thank you, yes, I'd forgotten the 'yer da' thing (quite funny Grin)

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 12:59

Is saying you want to rape your 12yo neighbour ok with you @Samcro? I find Giles Coren's whole attitude to sexual violence way off and very suss.Hmm

Changechangychange · 30/11/2021 13:03

@ColinTheKoala

I had not heard about this but would go out of my way to avoid watching anything with this man, or what I can only assume must be his sister, Victoria Coren

why is she responsible for her brother?

Oh don’t worry, she’s obnoxious in her own right.
Tusco · 30/11/2021 13:08

@topcat2014

All these people with no licences, do you not have TVs in your houses?

It's not just a matter of saying I never watch BBC

Yes I have tvs, I never watch live broadcasts or anything BBC related, I Player etc.
