To think *some* people are just fucking useless

I'm in a WhatsApp group for a uni course I'm doing and the others are somewhat younger than Mme (19-22ish) and OH MY GOD they're useless at stuff.

Everything is a problem that someone else needs to sort out or a reason they can't do something.

So for example. We usually spend all day doing our modules. A morning session and and afternoon one.

Morning one has been moved online and the afternoon is on site. We have 1hr break between sessions. We've been given 3 days notice.

Them: "I can't make it for the afternoon session, I live 90 minutes away! E only have 60 minutes between sessions....Waaaah"
Me: "Kust come to campus as normal and use the library and do the session from there..."
Them: "waaaah, I can't, becaise we're not allowed use teams on my work laptop, it's not installed"
Me: "so, use the web version..."
Them: "but I haven't got headphones... waaaah"
Me: SO FUCKING BUY SOME!!!!

I agree!!!! I sometimes wonder if it’s an age thing!!!

It's not.

FluffyBooBoo · 30/11/2021 09:35
@FluffyBooBoo because 98% of stuff has been done online in the last 18 months.

Every single person in my household has earphones of some description, be that proper over the head ones, ear buds, proper meeting headset, free ones that came with the phones. How else did several people work from home and home school all at the same time?!
I've done plenty of stuff online. Still do.

It's a funny thing. My house has different rooms, so people can be doing different things at the same time and not disturb others. I guess I'm lucky that way

GerbilCurse · 30/11/2021 09:35

Do you not need a headset for teams rather than just earphones or is it listening/watching only?

lupad · 30/11/2021 09:36

. How else did several people work from home and home school all at the same time?!

I never used my headphones whilst I was home schooling. I don't tend to use headphones often in my job anyway, same for DH

What’s App is usually for venting and sharing reactions. It’s a private tweet type thing, it’s not meant to be taken as seriously as you are taking it.

They aren't "poor university students
You literally said they are on degree apprenticeships which indicates they are the poorest of university students because most of those seeking degree apprenticeships cannot get loans to cover expenses and their living situation demands that they have some kind of income.

tttigress · 30/11/2021 09:38

Maybe if the tutor is presenting from the university, she could just sit in on that session?

I take you point OP

But equally it is quite annoying to have plans being continually changed due to Covid.

FluffyBooBoo · 30/11/2021 09:39

*"It's a big change and it's short notice. It's very inconvenient for some. People are allowed to complain."

No it's not, and no it isn't.

It's not at all inconvenient for them as they must attend every week anyway.*

Who are you to decide it's 'not at all inconvenient' for others? Clearly it is, as they can't be in two places at once. So they are having to come to a compromise. Which is inconvenient.

Not impossible, not insurmountable. But inconvenient.

Tal45 · 30/11/2021 09:40

If they can do the session from the library why can't they do it from home? Then they won't be late for the session because they've not been given enough time to get there between sessions.

Dixiechickonhols · 30/11/2021 09:41

Fluffybooboo are you a student? All Uni courses have been online during Covid so I’d expect students to have headphones to access online courses.
theelephantinthegroup the brownie leader sent me an email last night upset as a mum had complained re emails. You can’t do right for doing wrong. We send an email with list of activities for the half term and a reminder before deadline and reminder on Facebook but that’s apparently confusing.

Yes I am a student.

Nope - these people are all living at home, being paid to do a free degree. They are not poor woe-begone students. I promise you! They seem to have money to go out at the weekends, buy Starbucks and subway etc.

They CAN afford a cheap pair of £3 headphones - let's not pretend that £3 is the difference between these people eating and not eating.

They'd be late for the afternoon session, which is in person.

Some of us live on our own. Not everyone worked at home, not all kids had online schooling (if their parents went out to work, for example).

There are all sorts of configurations of households.

I do have headphones because they came with the phone, but I hate wearing headphones and have never used them, I never use them on work calls. I got new bone transfer ones for the gym which are just about bearable.

lupad · 30/11/2021 09:44

You seem a little obsessed with Starbucks

thisplaceisweird · 30/11/2021 09:45

I would really stop getting involved in their problems, they're not yours to solve and you seem very wound up. Just focus on your studies and step away from the whatsapp group.

FluffyBooBoo · 30/11/2021 09:45

Just think for yourselves and solve your miniscule problems yourselves

I'm sure they would. Based on what you've said, they weren't asking for solutions, they just needed a place to vent.

They would usually be at uni anyway. They have just decided that the only option available to them is to remain at home for morning session, and travel in for afternoon.

They can still travel in the morning, same as every week....

It's not an age thing. I'm in a FB group for my OU course, every single assignment SEVERAL people ask about referencing, word count etc. There is some good conversation but it's the same questions over and over again.

I was called rude for suggesting that there is lots of info if they use the search function.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 30/11/2021 09:47

Totally agree with the OP. Since restrictions came off and things became business as usual, so many basic tasks have become a whinge-fest.

00100001 · 30/11/2021 09:48

@user1471457751

Maybe they are just venting and you're 'helpful' suggestions are getting in the way if that. I would be pissed off by that new schedule too - surely it makes more sense to come in for full days but less of them (e.g. 2 full days rather than 4 afternoons). Travel is expensive and time consuming.
because that's how the DA is set up. You go in for 1 full day each week.

the schedule isn't new. It's just the morning session is temporarily online due to covid. Literally nothing is stopping them coming in as normal.

midsomermurderess · 30/11/2021 09:48

There is of course an awful lot of that on this site, grown women asking if they can eat something a day after its best by date, asking strangers, x said y, what does it mean????? etc. Some people, across a wide age range, are not very bright, capable of being functioning.

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 30/11/2021 09:48

You’re not alone @JustLyra As a mature student I was completely bemused by the lack of common sense or and any facility for critical reasoning exhibited amongst my cohort.
This was at a Russell Group uni btw and on a degree course (and then a masters) ranked in the top ten worldwide.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 30/11/2021 09:49

3 days is short notice and everyone is entitled to a WhatsApp whinge. If you can't just ignore it then the best answer is "if you really can't manage then tell your personal tutor / programme director / student course representative". You don't need to solve it for them and it's not a good idea to be the one who has all the answers.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/11/2021 09:49

Step away from the group OP! Just turn up, get on with your work, talk to tutors when you need to and do well in the course. That's what you're there for.

Yes some people are annoying but their incompetence at life is not your problem to solve. This is their learning opportunity. If you remove their agency by coaching them through it, they'll stay helpless for longer.
