No Religious Christmas cards

mumofEandE · 28/11/2021 23:05

I was in one of those 'cheap card shops' and a customer asked if there were any Religious Christmas cards.
There weren't.
I am not a practising Christian/ or practising anything (!) but this really made me feel that this is wrong!

I suppose Guy Fawkes is a celebration of the failure of a terrorist attempt with religious differences underlying it. Not sure religious folks want to particularly claim that one.

Chakraleaf · 30/11/2021 21:03

I just read a book called the history of the goddess from ice age to the bible. It has lots of information on the phasing out of older religions (and women!) While using the same festivals

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 30/11/2021 21:24

Errol that's pretty much exactly how I explained it to my dc this year - old school religious extremist terrorist attack that was foiled and had nasty consequences for those involved. Put it into a context they could understand (sadly really).

That book sounds fascinating chakra

I saw on FB that some people had complained about this card

What's wrong with it? I wouldn't buy it because it's not pretty enough Grin but it's not 'lost the plot' territory.

I like to get religious cards, and not spend a fortune- Card Factory have had boxes of cards with church and nativity scenes on in recent years.

I think it’s a shame when things like that aren’t stocked, but they presumably don’t sell all that well.

Are you one of the people who complained?

So, I have noticed that the OP hasn't been back for a while.
Maybe they decided to light the touch paper and watch it burn ?
As many posters have said religious Christmas cards are in most of the shops, all of the big supermarkets, even small local newsagents tend to stock the odd pack and places like the pound shop have plenty.
As a pp suggested the shop assistant probably couldn't be bothered to look and/or just didn't know.

julieca · 01/12/2021 05:47

@notthemum I agree. This was posted to be goady. Its like people who claim Christmas was cancelled because someone said Happy Holidays to them.

Nope - not goady- it was just something I saw the other day.

I have been following people's comments but some were a bit crappy to say the least!

I made a complaint in Tesco's as out of 23 sympathy cards, not 1 had any suggestion of religion - no prayers/ cross etc. For an older persons family who are very religious, sending them a bunch of flowers on a card just doesn't cut it. I was told Hallmark come in and fill the card section.

speakout · 01/12/2021 06:50

But Tesco /Hallmark UK will respnd to what customers want.
Most people are not practicing christians, even the elderly.
I love is a small twan and 4 long established churches have ben closed and the buildings put up for sale.
Congregations all over thr UK are dwindling.

I am delighted.

julieca · 01/12/2021 07:08

@mumofEandE sorry, I was wrong.

Shops dont have an agenda to push here. They just sell what people want to buy.
My FIL loved natural scenes with snow on Christmas cards. Good quality ones were always hard to find and I used to search many shops to find a card I knew he would like. I just assumed that was not what most people wanted to buy.

julieca · 01/12/2021 07:09

I am not religious at all. I hate getting religious Christmas cards personally.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 01/12/2021 07:10

I completely get that the religious community is reducing, but do you not think that out of 23 cards, there could be 1 with a vague hint? I can't get too excited about a lack of religious Christmas cards, but when a loved one dies, and their family find comfort in their faith, I like to acknowledge that.

julieca · 01/12/2021 07:13

@JumpLeadsForTwo sympathy cards are hard because there are so many different and difficult circumstances that can be involved.
Personally, about ten years ago I remember struggling to find a card that didn't have a religious sentiment or reference to meeting again within it. When buying a sympathy card I have went to a number of shops to find an appropriate one. Its always going to be hard to find the right one as it is such a sensitive time.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 01/12/2021 07:18

I know that @julieca but a simple card saying "you are in our prayers" or even a cross on the front and blank inside shouldn't be a problem. My issue was that there were 23 cards, and not one vague reference in any.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/12/2021 07:29

@mumofEandE it's the somewhat twisted equivalent of Christmas celebrated on the Discworld (Terry Pratchett) Smile
