No Religious Christmas cards

mumofEandE · 28/11/2021 23:05

I was in one of those 'cheap card shops' and a customer asked if there were any Religious Christmas cards.
There weren't.
I am not a practising Christian/ or practising anything (!) but this really made me feel that this is wrong!

There are hundreds of places you can get religious Christmas cards! They just need to look somewhere else. No one is obligated to stock them - most people don’t want them. 🤷‍♀️

SmellyOldOwls · 28/11/2021 23:07

Most people wanting religious cards probably get them through their church groups so there isn't much demand?

Lockheart · 28/11/2021 23:09

Aye of course.

I've seen tonnes of them about. I suspect you're looking harder for things to be offended about than for religious Christmas cards.

LaLaLouella · 28/11/2021 23:11

Religious cards are sold in loads of places - not a huge problem that they weren't sold in this particular shop...

I wasn't looking for them - another customer was! I just thought it strange / sad that they didn't have any but as someone above has said - the shop is a business and they will only stock what they will sell / customers want.

You know Halloween is theoretically also a religious festival? Guy Fawkes night is all about celebrating the protestant ascendancy. For most people the origins of these things are not important, it's just an opportunity to get together and have fun.

(You'd be just as justified throwing a hissy fit in the church shop because they have no Christmas cards commemorating the winter solstice, the true origins of the festival Grin)

Classica · 28/11/2021 23:21

Cheap card shops are all about the 'pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap' ethos and they'll have done their research and found that Santa sells, reindeers sell, snowmen sell, but Jesus in a manger doesn't.

If you look in the window of any charity shop they'll have this year's cards on display. They'll usually have around 8 options, 2 of them featuring a religious scene.

I bought a couple of lovely cards with 3 Kings image and words referring to following a star from The Card Factory yesterday. I think they were 89p. I'm sure there were others along the same religious theme. Maybe your store had sold out?

Those stores order what sells, I’m guessing the religious ones are the last to sell and get reduced down every year so it doesn’t make business sense to stock them.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 28/11/2021 23:33

Or they didn't actually know if they did and just fobbed them off justfor an easier life.

Unreasonabubble · 28/11/2021 23:35

There are not so many people who are religious nowadays. And also, most don't know if the recipient is religious or not so it is probably safer to send just a "Happy Christmas" card with no religious overtones.

Surely Christmas is about the birth of Christ.
I don't know of any church that sells anything . Most are places of worship.
Online is a good place . The faith mission tends to sell such .

beautifullymad · 28/11/2021 23:43

This year there are hardly any proper packs of Christian Christmas cards. I looked with my mum who always sends nativity cards. We looked hard.
The only place we could find doing them and we got the last pack on the shelf was WHSmiths.

You didn't look that hard then, there are religious cards being sold in many, many shops...

I bought Christmas cards with traditional nativity images, three wise men etc from a local charity shop last week. Our local card warehouse shop has "Congratulations on your baptism" cards so I imagine they have religious christmas cards too if I wanted them but no need as Ive got plenty already!

Unreasonabubble · 28/11/2021 23:48

@Classica - Well said.

Go to your local charity shop for religious Christmas cards.
Or your local chapel and you can buy Mass cards at the same time.
When I was young I bloody hated religious cards I preferred the Santa ones.

Aren't Christmas cards by their nature religious? People who don't celebrate a Christmas don't send them Confused
