No Religious Christmas cards

mumofEandE · 28/11/2021 23:05

I was in one of those 'cheap card shops' and a customer asked if there were any Religious Christmas cards.
There weren't.
I am not a practising Christian/ or practising anything (!) but this really made me feel that this is wrong!

I love getting christmas cards, but religious ones go straight into recycling- I won't put them on display.

@JumpLeadsForTwo

I know that *@julieca* but a simple card saying "you are in our prayers" or even a cross on the front and blank inside shouldn't be a problem. My issue was that there were 23 cards, and not one vague reference in any.
They sell what people want to buy.
speakout · 01/12/2021 07:58

Exactly.
Many people don;t want religion in their christmas.

I completely get that the religious community is reducing, but do you not think that out of 23 cards, there could be 1 with a vague hint? I can't get too excited about a lack of religious Christmas cards, but when a loved one dies, and their family find comfort in their faith, I like to acknowledge that.
How hard is it to write words of your own in a card? Is anyone really comforted by a religious symbol on a bough card versus a sincere personal message?

I don't get this:

"I love getting christmas cards, but religious ones go straight into recycling- I won't put them on display."

If religious cards offend you so much why not make it plain to people that you don't want them and save them wasting their money?

Makes no sense Confused

I live in a small town and 4 long established churches have ben closed and the buildings put up for sale. Congregations all over the UK are dwindling. I am delighted

What has made you become so bitter?

She doesn't sound 'bitter' to me.

Gin
'What has made you become so bitter?'

I suspect that speakout was brought up in a Catholic Primary School where fearsome nuns regularly rapped her knuckles with a ruler. I know a few people with that background and they hate religion with a vengeance.

Not really, if you see 'Christmas' as being merely the label currently applied to the midwinter festival. Of course, these festivals usually had some religious elements in the past, but the commonality of the timing across many cultures suggests it's the season rather than any particular deity which is the underlying reason. Cheer in the darkest time.

I know this isn't the point, but etsy has some absolutely beautiful bereavement faith cards. Usually dispatched very swiftly too.

I don't like religious ones either, what's wrong with just enjoying the season

Many many people, including myself, celebrate Christmas without religion. No need to be so passive agressive.

How?

"No need to be so passive agressive." ??

So now you're a psychologist? [big grin]

I never claimed to be a psychologist.

Can't speak for anyone else, but on the 25th of December I see my family, eat turkey, give presents and cards, maybe watch Doctor Who. Nothing particularly religious.

Although I'm assuming that what you mean, although you are too passive aggressive to say, that anything anyone does for Christmas must be Christian because of the name., even if those people are not Christians and do not engage in any Christian practices and activities. I assume that you are also spending this Wednesday worshiping Woden.

labazslovesliving · 01/12/2021 10:45

perhaps i am odd but those type of places I would not be looking for Religious cards more jokey cards

OK that's fine.
So it's a bit like Thanksgiving?

"Although I'm assuming that what you mean, although you are too passive aggressive to say, that anything anyone does for Christmas must be Christian because of the name.,"

Please stop assuming and sticking nasty behaviouristic labels on me. That says a lot more about you than me.

IMO People are free to do what they want at Christmas.
I just can't see the logic in calling it Christmas if people don't want a Christian celebration, why not Yule, Saturnalia, Solistic Feast of Mithras, Midwinter. (No religion in the last one)

Atheists are always complaining that Christians have hi-jacked Pagan festivals. Now it seems the boot is on the other foot and atheists don't like being called out on it.

Go figure.

What on Earth are you talking about now?
