Chanel on play dates

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 13:52

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd just assume they had more money than sense. Even if I had the money to waste on a designer bag, I wouldn't. They're mostly hideous.

ALittleBitWorrriedNow · 04/11/2021 14:41

Channel is a bit naff anyway

NotSure94 · 04/11/2021 14:42

I remember someone admiring my rainbow strappy sandals and asking if they were Chanel! I had in fact got them for a tenner in the African supermarket! God I miss those sandals, predictably for the price they were mostly cardboard and lasted about three months but they were amazing and I got loads of compliments.

Don't worry about it - I usually rock the Adsa George/teenage son's cast off look and it's never done me any harm or lost me friends!

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:43

@stingofthebutterfly But I suppose it’s all
relative isn’t it? If they have a great amount of money (they do) then it’s not wasting money. I’d imagine they keep them for a long time and aren’t particularly frivolous. It makes me laugh as it’s all second hand for lots of books, clothes etc sometimes for the kids and not wasting money on one hand

Who wears sandals in November?

nanbread · 04/11/2021 14:44

You're jealous and feeling shit because of.... a bag.

A fucking bag.

So not worth your time.

Try to see it from that perspective.

Anonymous48 · 04/11/2021 14:44

What on earth are designer sandals, and how would you know?

NothingIsWrong · 04/11/2021 14:44

Zara would be posh for me, if I actually noticed. I'm usually Primark, H&M and then second hand fat face/seasalt off eBay as there is so much nice stuff with absolutely minimal wear for cheaper prices.

I do spend decent amounts on bras though

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:45

@Dojacatpaws But why is it materialistic, don’t most people just like nice things? If we choose a bag or coat or shoes, we choose nice ones we like, they just do the same but with heftier price tags. I’d do the same I think, couple of good quality bags to last a good, few years, same with shoes etc. I think I’d mix it with *Normal clothes

Helloise · 04/11/2021 14:45

A good proportion of these bags and shoes that you see will be really good knockoffs - known as "replicas". My 22 year old daughter got into this whole scene couple of years ago*, she found a forum where people shared info about how to navigate the Chinese-language websites where these things are sold, how to find and communicate with Chinese agents who buy direct from the factory, how to find reviews of specific agents and factories, etc. Unless you're an expert and you got right up close and knew exactly what every stitch is meant to look like, you 100% would not be able to tell these are fakes (they often even fool people who work in the boutiques that sell the real thing) and they sell for a tenth of the price, give or take, of the "real items. My daughter says that all of her friends buy fakes, and they would consider it idiotic to spend £2,000 on something you could buy for £200.

*Before someone tells me off, my daughter no longer buys replicas as she's stopped working in the city and doesn't care about impressing her colleagues/bosses anymore with her clothes and bags. Designer replicas are a controversial topic, I am not sure how I feel about it but it doesn't matter to me personally since Chanel and the like is a bit "basic" for my tastes - I like some extraordinarily expensive accessories but they are a bit esoteric and not really economical for the replica factories to worry about.

Imissmoominmama · 04/11/2021 14:45

I generally use a rucksack, or my pockets; be my friend and you’ll feel much better Wink.

1forAll74 · 04/11/2021 14:46

Goodness me,don't ever fall into the trap, of assessing what others may have, and you don't have the same. Just think to yourself, that the others are like sheep, who have to follow designer trends, but you are an individual, who buys what you like.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/11/2021 14:46

Yes Zara is posh in my book too!

Really wouldn’t worry, it’s their business if that’s what’s important to them

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:46

@CaMePlaitPas I’m not in the U.K.

OP posts:
Dojacatpaws · 04/11/2021 14:46

Such ostentation would really put me off

Anonymous48 · 04/11/2021 14:47

@CaMePlaitPas

Who wears sandals in November?
Me!

(But I live in a warm climate.)

Still no idea what designer sandals are though, and me and my friends live in sandals year round.

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:48

@Helloise Definitely not knock offs, they wouldn’t do it and have multi million pound houses (some of them)

OP posts:
Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:48

Could I get away with a market knock off though 🤣

OP posts:
Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/11/2021 14:49

If they all have Chanel I bet they are fake.😂

LaBellaTrix · 04/11/2021 14:49

Sandals in November?

Helloise · 04/11/2021 14:50

Designer Sandals

More designer sandals

Ericaequites · 04/11/2021 14:50

They may well be all fur coats and no knickers while large amounts of debt. Just enjoy your friends’ company and stop comparisons.

ExConstance · 04/11/2021 14:50

I think that the way it really works is that A. saves up and buys Chanel or similar bag and feels good about it. A. then goes out and meets B. who has sees B. with Zara or similar bag which is more funky/colourful/has nice embroidery on it etc. etc. A. then wonders why she spent all the money on the Chanel bag in the first place and thinks B. is far more stylish and sensible.
On occasions I've bought something very expensive and regretted it when I've seen something far nicer that cost less. A never lets on though.
On the other hand it's probably fake anyway.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 04/11/2021 14:50

@CaMePlaitPas

Who wears sandals in November?
Other countries?

If I see someone on the street with an LV, Chanel bag etc I pretty much always assume it’s a fake. There’s a big market for them. I’ve seen high quality fakes for a couple of hundred - which I suppose is a bargain compared to the thousands some of these bags go for. Personally I’d rather go for a quality leather bag from a lesser known brand for that price.

tickledtiger · 04/11/2021 14:50

Just try to focus on the friendship.
