Chanel on play dates

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends that’s the important take away here.

Liverbird77 · 04/11/2021 14:10

What you think of me? I wear Sainsbury's and use the changing bag for everything!!!

Tal45 · 04/11/2021 14:12

Primarni and a carrier bag here. If they're nice then they're nice and that's what matters. I don't understand people who get excited about bags tbh.

Viviennemary · 04/11/2021 14:13

They're probably dupes

RosieGuacamosie · 04/11/2021 14:13

@NatMoz

I have money but I don't spend it on Chanel bags, you're more likely to see me with an Osprey rucksack.

I spend my money differently that's all.

If I wanted a luxury item it would be jewellery, something I could give to my baby to inherit in the future.

I have money goodness me that’s a crass thing to say!!

OP I wouldn’t worry about it, it’s just a handbag, doesn’t make them any better or worse than you!

AllieTM · 04/11/2021 14:14

I have a mix of expensive bags and shoes and stuff from Sainsburys.

I would certainly never think I was better than anyone else.

Judging people for having expensive things is no better than judging people for having cheaper things (not that you are OP but feels like others maybe are here)

DartmoorChef · 04/11/2021 14:16

I don't even have a handbag.

RosieGuacamosie · 04/11/2021 14:16

If you really want a nice bag OP I would suggest joining some of the Facebook resale pages and getting yourself a nice mulberry/YSL etc for about 1/2 the retail price. The Chanel ones tend to hold their value very well but there are bargains to be had for other practically new bags! I buy most of my bags this way now Smile

Moonshine5 · 04/11/2021 14:17

OP, I am mercilessly mocked by my nearest and dearest as I rarely use my designer bags. Either they will be too heavy, not have enough pockets, can't be asked to empty one bag into another, you get my drift. Also am a massive klutz and usually leave crisps, nuts, packets wrappers, juice, wipes in them etc. Currently using this and I heart it (yes rice bag lol)

Chanel on play dates
shrunkenhead · 04/11/2021 14:18

Not because they're mums, but because the majority of people can't afford designer clobber. Fair enough if you mix in certain circles then I guess you'd know who could/c couldn't afford it.
It's like the Burberry Effect - basically anything potentially designer just looks cheap and tacky. Those with actual money don't feel the need to flaunt it.

KurtWildeWitchOfTheWoods · 04/11/2021 14:23

And there would be me rocking up with my primark bag without a care in the world as to whether I'm being judged or not Grin

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:26

@shrunkenhead Definitely not flaunted at all, understated but I noticed as they’re so beautiful and then recognise the bags, shoes etc. I knew they’d have gear like that, but I think at this play date was when I noticed they *All did

OP posts:
felulageller · 04/11/2021 14:26

How can you even tell??

I wouldn't have a clue!

ElftonWednesday · 04/11/2021 14:26

I would worry slightly whether they are the sort of people to whom designer stuff matters and they are all signalling to one another that they are in this little club. Personally I can't tell a designer bag from a Primark one, unless it has the designer name written all over it, in which case it's rather tacky.

idontlikealdi · 04/11/2021 14:28

Fakes are a thing.

Pheasantlysurprised · 04/11/2021 14:29

im just not fond of what Chanel et al signal at all. It isn't me, and it isn't particularly individual or creative. It's just money, and no one looks past that, and it isn't enough for me.

that said I cant stand Zara either Grin

I'd be much more likely to choose something unique buy understated, or slightly louche, "ooh, my bag? just something my great aunt threw my way, no idea where she bought it".
I'd honestly buy one from Plumo before Selfridges.

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:29

@felulageller I know a few different bags (because I’d like one!) and obviously you can see the name/design on closer inspection

OP posts:
brambleon · 04/11/2021 14:32

If they aren’t judging you and you get on with them I wouldn’t let it bother you. All my clothes (and DC’s) are second hand, for me if I had a friend who wore Zara clothes that would be posh to me but if they were nice to me it really wouldn’t bother me

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:32

@ElftonWednesday Definitely not those type of people, this is just their life and clothes/bags as mine would be Zara, H & M or Primark 🤷🏻‍♀️
Nothing flaunted or over the top, beautiful, understated and often quite worn but good condition.
Def not fakes, I know their basic lifestyles-houses, cars etc. It would be just like a Zara bag to me

OP posts:
3scape · 04/11/2021 14:33

Anyone judging others based on how much they've spent on cars/ bags holidays isn't really worth investing time in and probably easily fooled too! Stick to those who value you, your time and company!

BiLuminous · 04/11/2021 14:33

I don't even have a Zara bag so don't worry. The brands they wear are irrelevant really; do you like them? Do they like you? Do they treat you as an equal? You need to find your people and not be friends with mums just because theyre a mum or because your kid likes theirs.

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:34

Eurgh..it probably makes me sound ridiculous and I’m honestly not shallow in any way, but I’d really sometimes just like beautiful things!

OP posts:
DespairingHomeowner · 04/11/2021 14:36

Maybe they are using the bags they used to take to work? In a lot of offices expensive bags are a bit of a thing …

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 14:36

@BiLuminous We all get on really well, I’ve pondered it a couple of times before but it’s never really bothered me as it’s mainly a mixed group with a fair few wealthier people and so what 🤷🏻‍♀️
Just at this meet, I realised that it was everyone, that’s how subtle it is really and isn’t flaunted

OP posts:
Dojacatpaws · 04/11/2021 14:38

They're not that down to earth if they are so materialistic
