Chanel on play dates

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Christmasadverthell

🙈THE BAGS AREN'T FAKE!!!
Ok so you are in a circle of people that can afford £2,000 luxury items. You can’t. It’s not about them looking down on you but have you got the income to keep up the friendship? I don’t think those with money care about poorer lifestyles actually. But I do think they assume nights out, nears, taxi’s, weekends away that sort of thing.

@ShirleyPhallus

The reverse snobbery on this thread is astounding. “I use a primark carrier bag that has a hole in it and all my stuff falls out but I’m a better person from not spending my own money on whatever I want to because it’s no one else’s business”

Why is MN so competitive? Who actually gives a shit what other people wear / use?

Totally agree. Probably because people are insecure and want to prove themselves

Well why do you think Chanel bags sell?

Champersandchocolate · 06/11/2021 20:07

Probably got it from inspired edition like most people. Even millionaires wear fakes, trust.

MissCruellaDeVil · 06/11/2021 20:12

There's a good chance they're fake, a lot of my friendship circle has fake LV bags for a day to day use, they're only about £15 so doesn't matter if they're scuffed. They only use the real ones when somewhere nice.

BadNomad · 06/11/2021 20:18

Are people really still going on about your millionaire friends carrying £15 fake handbags...

shas19 · 06/11/2021 20:25

Honestly you can get such good replicas, not from your standard market but definitely online. Even if they are real it doesn't matter

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2021 20:37

I know It’s mad 😂
justswaying · 07/11/2021 08:12

It is so funny to me that half of these posters are convinced the bags are fake GrinGrin

Eh?!

Wtf is inspired edition ?! Hahahaha

I have about ten designer bags. I buy them to update my clothes as fashion is difficult in plus sizes which I am. I work in beauty which means the young girls love to see the bags. We sometimes give them out as sales achievement prizes and that is always the most popular prize. Tbh I buy 90% of them second hand. Ditto my designer clothes. I love a charity shop too having worked in them. I have three friends who are multi millionaires. Two would not dream of buying a bag over £200. One is tight, the other likes to lay low and thinks showing wealth is vulgar!

Astrak · 07/11/2021 09:31

My "handbag" is a yellow bum bag.
I really don't care what anyone thinks.

I have a few "proper" ones, but as a retired professional, living in the back of beyond, I rarely use them.

Bunnycat101 · 07/11/2021 09:37

I find the insistence that they’re all fakes bizarre. People have money and they spend it. A mulberry Bayswater almost became an office uniform in London. I saw so many of them and it felt like a mark of success when I saved enough to buy one. No doubt I could have spent that on something more worthy. No-one bats an eyelid at people spending on holidays so I don’t know why bags seem to provoke so much inverse snobbery.

It always makes me laugh when I hear the trope about all rich people having battered Volvos etc. I live near a prep school and have never seen one driving past yet. There is however a fleet of land rovers and other expensive cars. People with money tend to have nice things be that watches, cars, holidays, handbags, jewellery etc.

ginforever · 07/11/2021 10:01

Ask if they go to Turkey and you know where their bags may have come from 🤣
They look perfectly similar and are £5 each lol

Some ppl like to pose as posh, make them feel superior 😉

saturning · 07/11/2021 10:39

God, all this going on about/assumptions:

i.The bags are replica fakes

ii. The ladies or people who spend more than £1000 are vulgar show-offs, or as in the case of chanel, spend £3000 plus

iii. they are trying to look posh.

They just have different ways of spending their money, that's all. It doesn't make them any better or worse, confirm or prove anything FFS! It's just a bag, an expensive one but it really doesn't prove anything.

I have a car that is over 15 years, I could afford a new BMW X5 or a Merc but I prefer to have money in the bank and over pay the mortgage by £500- £1000 per month. I don't judge people who do do have fancy cars on a PCP, via a loan or as a work car package/benefit...

I have a few Louis Vuitton that would now be sold in the boutiques at £1000 and then some and have a couple of YSL/Gucci silk scarves I paid £300+ for. Yet I have grey frizzy hair and am overweight and drive a 16 year old car. What am I trying to prove? That I'm elite or rich - no!!! I like the designs, the iconography and the materials.

Things that I have can be bought on credit card or payment plans, so if you have an income and can pay off monthly, things that maybe 10 years ago not widely available to the masses are now in reach. Also, let's thank instagram and blogs for showing "normal" people with Chanel

I was in Louis Vuitton yesterday getting a bag repaired and so many young people in 20s in tracksuits/sportswear buying scarves, perfumes and woolly hats - probably saved up!!!

Maireas · 07/11/2021 11:07

Mulberry is not the same as Chanel.
Quite a different price point. I'm a teacher and have Mulberry handbags, some of my colleagues favour those LV Neverfulls.
Not the same as Chanel. There's expensive brands, and there's full on designer!
If you have £10-30k to spend on a bag, you're in a fairly elite group.

saturning · 07/11/2021 11:20

chanel and hermes are the super expensive labels. owning a bag from those places does not make you more worthy or superior. it's a bag.
