Chanel on play dates

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 13:52

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
FlipFlops4Me · 04/11/2021 14:51

My bags are from the local charity shop. They are for me to carry things around in. Theirs come from posh shops and are for them to carry things in. No difference, as far as I can tell.

sasparilla1 · 04/11/2021 14:52

I really wouldn't worry about it!

People spend their money differently, and they don't sound like they were looking down their nose at you, so it doesn't sound snobby.

Helloise · 04/11/2021 14:53
@Helloise Definitely not knock offs, they wouldn’t do it and have multi million pound houses (some of them)
There are plenty of very rich people who buy replicas, in fact, very rich people often got that way by being not-exactly-ethical, and they're also, quite often, tight as fuck. So spending an hour online to get some bargain fake Loubies (or getting the assistant to do it) probably happens a lot more often in the multi-million pound houses than you would think.

Ozanj · 04/11/2021 14:54

I presume these are bags and shoes they paid for while working?

isthismylifenow · 04/11/2021 14:56

They are just things OP. Material things.

If you have a lifestyle where you can genuinely afford high end clothes/shoes/bags then fine. But please, don't get going getting in to debt to be in with this crowd.

AnAutumnAfternoon · 04/11/2021 14:57

We've just got to play the hand we are dealt with in life OP, that's all we can do. We are all the same when we are 6 feet under.

cakewench · 04/11/2021 14:57

I have a ridiculous diamond ring (not ridiculous but you know what I mean. Excessive probably for everyday wear) which I inherited and has been in the family for a long time. I do wear it everyday, unless we're out digging in dirt or something. And my thoughts on the matter are that I enjoy wearing it and it would be entirely wasted sitting in a box somewhere.

I've come to a point in my life that I've done this with many items now. I do have a few nice handbags and I see no reason to not put them in regular rotation. There's no use saving them for some hypothetical evening out.

Also since you asked, I wouldn't bother with a knockoff. Maybe just find something completely different and make it your own?

BeefSupreme · 04/11/2021 14:58

@2typesofjungle

Yabu to think these women look at you and your stuff and judge you for it, they probably couldn't really care less what shoes you are wearing.
Seriously, you don’t think people are judgemental twats?
EvenRosesHaveThorns · 04/11/2021 14:59

Your Chanel is my Zara. I do charity shops, but who cares?

BeeDavis · 04/11/2021 14:59

It’s a bag and sandals. They do the same job as the bag and shoes you have ☺️

girlmom21 · 04/11/2021 15:00

I understand OP. They have nice things as a part of their lifestyle and you just wish you could sometimes have a nice bag or a nice pair of shoes that cost more than a months mortgage. You're not unreasonable for how you feel.

SweetMaryHell · 04/11/2021 15:01

I have money but Zara would be classed as posh to me 😂 the likes of Chanel would be classed as bloody stupid

I don’t even own a handbag (I think I have one from next somewhere but I don’t use it).

All my clothes are from Next - I have a pair Hunter wellies for walking the dog and even they were second hand off eBay and as I said, I’m not short of a bob or two - I just don’t see the point in dressing myself up like a dog for people to approve of

ittakes2 · 04/11/2021 15:01

I have not been paying attention to other mum's handbags!

SweetMaryHell · 04/11/2021 15:01

Dog = doll

Bunnycat101 · 04/11/2021 15:04

Don’t assume they are new. I had a period before children and my large mortgage when I spent money on nice bags etc. I wouldn’t do it now.

NortieTortie · 04/11/2021 15:05

Not sure if YABU or not as it sounds like we have completely different lifestyles 😂 i wouldn't know designer if it slapped me in the face. However, I do think if you're being invited on playdates they surely can't care too much. Wear what you like and take no notice, OP. It's a good example for your DC. Flowers

Alpacahunter · 04/11/2021 15:05

Luxury brands like Chanel destroy their unsold merchandise to avoid it being sold off cheaply and lowering the tone of the brand. Coach was recently outed for ordering employees to take expensive bags out back, slashing them with a knife and then throwing them in the bin. Chanel doesn't give a crap about the workers they exploit to make their goods, the animals that suffer for the materials, of the effects of their empire on the planet.

Think of all the women in dv shelters that have had to escape with nothing that could use those bags. Poor people around the world that cannot afford warm or adequate clothing. I hate those luxury brands and what they stand for. You can get a great quality bag from a less famous designer for a few hundred pounds that will last for years. Spending thousands on a bag just for the label while others choose between heating or eating is some sort of weird collective madness we've all bought into.

traintraveller · 04/11/2021 15:05

It's always the same on these threads OP says her friends are lovely but she wishes she could have what they have. Nothing wrong with that OP, we've all been there. Then all these posters jump in to say they're fake/ naff/ materialistic/ in debt while going on about judging others.

nimbuscloud · 04/11/2021 15:06

@BeefSupreme
Yep -,the amount of judging aimed at the women with the Chanel bags does indeed prove your point.

KaycePollard · 04/11/2021 15:06

I think obvious labels are naff, as all they do is show off someone's money. That's pretty vulgar.

Rise above it @Christmasadverthell

elbea · 04/11/2021 15:07

People prioritise different things though. Lots of my more expensive clothes were from when I was a high earner before children. I lived at work and my bills were paid so had a high disposable income.

Now I prioritise good quality clothes that last years. I have quite a few pairs of expensive shoes, my £400 boots look good as new 7 years after I bought them. Before I’d buy a new pair every year and I’d buy lots of cheap dresses. Now less dresses but better quality.

Nope, don't feel shit about it. They are just engaging in conspicuous consumption, outside of their own bubble it means nothing and is a total waste of money.
BoredZelda · 04/11/2021 15:10

I wouldn’t know a Chanel handbag if it smacked me in the face.
