Chanel on play dates

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:

In the very wealthy parts of London, people don’t tend to bother. They certainly do spend money on clothes etc, but it’s far more understated and nobody wants a bag that is essentially a logo

This isn’t true at all, I don’t know what sort of information this is but I’m a member of several member’s clubs in London and mix with these circles and everyone has at least one birkin, all the chanel bags and every other Prada etc. They aren’t always gaudy. Clothes are expensive but not flashy, like Loro piana and brunello cuccinelli but believe me the bags are all Hermes, chanel etc.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 13:46

Actually @paloma2 sorry because I think my post reads as aggressive and it’s not supposed to! I’m genuinely surprised you’ve had such a different experience than me. My in laws are a Kensington family and what you’re describing is not what I’ve seen

Sunflowers095 · 05/11/2021 17:20

Coco Chanel tried to sell out her Jewish business partners to the Nazis. You don't need a bag that supports her "legacy" for sure.

Everyone can spend their money how they want but there's people starving and it's seems insane to throw away money on a handbag just because it has a logo slapped on it. I wouldn't worry if I were you!

mumoftinyterrors · 05/11/2021 17:31

Over half the mums at my son's school have a designer handbag, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci etc, and all similar styles.

I'd bet £100 95% of them are fakes.

Don't give it a second thought OP.

meganorks · 05/11/2021 17:37

I used to work in a cafe in a vair posh area. Every few months this guy would come and have a fake handbag party. All the posh local ladies would come and get fake Louis Vuitton handbags. I remember someone trying to convince me to go, but
A) I was 19, working in a cafe and even at £50, that was more than I would spend on a handbag
B) I didn't want one anyway, because who cares about that shit?!

Anyway, point is, who cares about that? And might be fake anyway (even if they could afford the real thing)

wellstopdoingitthen · 05/11/2021 17:38

I have a Chanel bag, I paid £3.50 at the charity shop.

msgreen · 05/11/2021 17:39

If people are kind and genuine what's the problem ,be you and
stop worrying they probably married to a cheque book anyway
if they are free for play dates

Aisforharlot · 05/11/2021 17:42

Chanel was literally a nazi. Don't feel bad.

amatsip · 05/11/2021 17:45

Who’s wearing sandals in the weather? It’s freezing 🥶

Lifethroughlenses · 05/11/2021 17:52

All you need really concern yourself with is whether they give two hoots what bag you have. If they do, they are not worth being friends with but I’m willing to bet they don’t give a monkeys. Normal people only care about whether others are funny/kind/similar interests/kids get on etc. Don’t get sucked into surface stuff.

fourandnomore · 05/11/2021 17:52

I have loads of different bags I use and none are expensive but if I added up the cost of them all it might add up to a designer bag - they may have that one single bag and that’s just a different choice. I wouldn’t have a clue where someone’s bag is from so I’m sure if they are lovely people as you say they wouldn’t know where yours is from either and don’t care. Try not to think everyone judges these things, they really don’t!

CherryBlossomAutumn · 05/11/2021 17:57

I honestly don’t have enough money to have any designer handbags.

However I do have friends who are wealthy, friends who are poor, friends who are on the media, friends who work as cleaners, friends who are Professors in Oxford or have a title before their name.

And as far as I know, none of them have designer handbags either.

LoisLane66 · 05/11/2021 17:59

They may be dupes for all you know. Don't be fooled. Chanel does not = happiness. I have a few items from Versace, Balenciaga, Gucci, Ferragamo and Ralph Lauren but the majority of my clothes are from M&S and Primark with a smattering of Zara and a lot of footwear from M&S. I am happiest in the High Street items.
Remember the old saying: All that glisters is not gold. (old spelling)

LisaD76 · 05/11/2021 18:00

You’ll probably find that a lot are fake, need that Chanel on Facebook or shopaholic Instagram sell good replicas, loads of fake balenciaga trainers on feet too

LoisLane66 · 05/11/2021 18:13

My most admired bag by a country mile, is a large grey handled slouch completely covered in silvery grey sequins. I have had random people of all ages, stop me in car parks, in Tesco, John Lewis and various restaurants/pubs/places around Britain, to admire it and sometimes ask where I bought it. In fact I have two. One bought in store and one almost new found on eBay in case the first was stolen.
It was 6 pounds from Primark in 2012. Still going strong with no sequin loss. eBay purchase was 2 pounds plus postage.
It's best to buy things you like whether or not they're fashionable.

Lightisnotwhite · 05/11/2021 18:13

@2typesofjungle

Yabu to think these women look at you and your stuff and judge you for it, they probably couldn't really care less what shoes you are wearing.
Well why go to trouble of having a Chanel bag if you didn’t care about them?

Of course they judge. A equivalent non Chanel bag is no better than a genuine one but they’ve actively chosen a branded one..

whenthedoveslie · 05/11/2021 18:14

Don’t assume they are new. I had a period before children and my large mortgage when I spent money on nice bags etc. I wouldn’t do it now.

Same. I have Chanel, Balenciaga etc. My most used bag now is a - free with my daughters shoes - rucksack.

It was entirely normal pre-kids days to buy these things. Wouldn't now and will pass them onto my dd's.

calvados · 05/11/2021 18:17

Not all Chanel bags are genuine OP ..

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2021 18:22

Not all Chanel handbags are fake either!

BabyDereksToes · 05/11/2021 18:23

{Alpacahunter} I totally agree. It's obscene really. I couldn't justify spending that much on a bag or a pair of shoes even if I could afford it. I get way more satisfaction from buying secondhand or getting a good bargain. It's all totally meaningless, this designer bollocks. Everything has been designed by somebody.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 18:25

Fucking hell MN is so annoying 90% of the thread is people saying the bags are probably fake when OP HAS SAID SO MANY TIMES THEY ARE NOT 😆🤦🏻‍♀️

3WildOnes · 05/11/2021 18:28

I live in Lindon and lots of my friends have designer handbags. Mulberry and YSL are more popular than Chanel amongst my friends but that is probably because they’re cheaper. I have one friend who has a few genuine bags and lots of very good fakes. Sometimes I borrow one of her fakes 😂

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2021 18:31

This thread is the usual mumsnet crap.
If you are lucky enough to own a bag then it must be fake/ you must be a numpty/ it is a dreadful thing, that makes you a dreadful person if you own one!
FFS how sad do some of you make yourselves sound??
I own quite a few genuine Chanel classics and Hermes bags. I see them as investments, which have appreciated very well, and that will most probably outlive me, they are made of quality calf leather and to me very beautiful, I dont give a f**k what anyone else thinks. And I know I am not adding to the mountain of landfill that fast disposable fashion is doing.

Designer handbags are not sustainable or ethical. If you want them that's your choice but what's wrong with admitting that:
  • Chanel was a nazi and supporting her legacy is distasteful
  • Most of the price you pay is for the logo
  • Designers literally burn their stock to keep the value high/not have to discount it - not sustainable at all

Do what you want but don't get upset if other people have opinions.

The play date seems like an opportunity for parental bragging maybe? I wouldn't worry about it, Zara is perfectly fine, probably better than what I would wear. I don't own a Chanel bag, I make do with Fiorelli which is low-rent by comparison, but I don't honestly care.😁
