Chanel on play dates

366 replies

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 13:52

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Willtheymakemegoonthemeds

zara? thats posh for me
My handbag cost £5. It's a bag.
Reviewer123456 · 05/11/2021 18:47

I have noticed a lot more designer bags around, I just assume they are fake.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2021 18:48

Sunflower, I only hope you don’t shop on the high street for fast fashion, nor eat/ support Mc Donalds who have dubious links to terrorist organisations, and follow your own rules, in the knowledge that many corporations support things we may not agree with.
Oh, and my bags dont have logos btw.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 18:50

I would rather own a chanel bag that’s not made from a poor child in a sweatshop than a bag from primark etc where it is. How ethical is that?!?

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 18:52

@WowIlikereallyhateyou people are not able to just be happy for other people or be fine with not having what other people have on MN. Just makes people sound jealous/bitter/lacking in self awareness tbh. I get not everyone wants a designer handbag, cool. But the vitriol against them it’s a bit “thou doth protest too much”

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2021 18:52

Justtheretoask, absolutely. There are alot of hypocrites.

How ignorant. A lot of people who wear fast fashion (not buy excess) can't afford other clothing. I'd you can afford chanel you can afford sustainable clothing.

Same goes for fast food - have you never heard of food deserts?

And btw, no I don't support these organisations when I can afford not to. Not everyone is vain and brainwashed by branding/advertising.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 19:01

Not everyone is vain and brainwashed by branding/advertising

There will be something you own/buy that probes you wrong.whether it’s the smart phone you chose, the car you drive or the brand of ketchup you buy. There will be something. Everyone has specific brands they like for branding/advertising reasons and it doesn’t need to be chanel or expensive to be the case

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2021 19:02

Sunflower, you dont have to buy fast fashion on a budget when you can get far better quality clothing from charity shops. Nothing ignorant about it at all.

You show yourself to be ignorant purely by your assumptions about peoples choices, the fact that you think people are brainwashed, and the fact you feel you can be rude to people by trying to be somewhat condescending. Well done!

Mollymoostoo · 05/11/2021 19:05

@marykitty

Zara? I am wearing now Leggings from Aldi
Primarni for me Wink
Empressofthemundane · 05/11/2021 19:08

I’m not a handbag gal. I wouldn’t even notice. I just go to TKmax and buy whatever is leather that I like the look of.
I’m also trainers all the way.

lovelymama · 05/11/2021 19:09

I don’t have a single designer item. Actually I have one sort of designer bag that all my friends chipped in for for my 40th but that’s it. I see mums in their designer stuff but it doesn’t make me jealous….I just think wow, that’s what you value, it doesn’t occur to me to value that stuff.

I have an amazing gym membership, lovely holidays, enjoy good wine. Those are the things I value, so I think we’re all just different

Ask yourself honestly though why you want a chanel handbag. Do you really believe these choices exist in a vacuum and you're not influenced by society/branding/other things?

Why is it so wrong to admit there's nothing admirable about it? We all make choices that can ba selfish/vain I just don't understand why so many posters are so defensive about it and try to act like it's some kind of altruistic thing.

Also FYI if you're poor and you work 12 hours a day you might not have time to shop in charity shops. So it is ignorant.

tempchecked · 05/11/2021 19:12

Has anyone ever seen the factories (sorry upmarket workshops) where these items are made, the REAL versions I mean? I am genuinely curious to know how they cost so much. Is it the stitching, the materials use, the design, the logo etc?

I know this is going to sound bah humbug but there are so many of them around now, they cannot be exclusively one off, handmade in a leather emporium etc. or maybe they are.

I know I am wrong to think this but they always seem to me to be Primark with a logo! And TBH a bag is a bag and as long as it suits my needs I wouldn't give a hoot. Each to their own though for sure.

Bollocks. Many people don’t. Especially people that don’t see adverts/ social media. And people that like a brand for a reason - wear well,, reliable, will change when the brand doesn’t work fir them.
BlueCherryBlossom · 05/11/2021 19:27

@fabulousathome

Nouveau riche behaviour.
This.

No one with actual serious money wields a Chanel handbag.

Own your cheaper handbag, OP, with your head held high.

I love my £40 handbag that I've used for years.

I'm not an ostentatious person though, because I'm secure in myself. I recommend not giving a shit and not playing the sort of games that make you feel shit for not having an overpriced handbag marketed at suckers.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 19:30

Hahahahahahahahahahaahahahaha. Hahahahahaahahahahah. Apart from the “serious money” people I know:

Kate Middleton
Tamara Ecclestone
Fashion bug blog lady
Literally every single A list actress

Why do people lie to themselves? It’s fine if you can’t afford it or don’t want it but don’t lie

CherryBlossomAutumn · 05/11/2021 19:34

YANBU to be feeling a bit shit about it.

We wear clothes to signal messages to others. The designer handbags is an exclusive clique and you can’t afford to be in that clique. You are a bit outside.

But don’t disregard them and build more of a barrier. You said they are nice. So barge past the clique and be part of them. But be careful not to become the ‘cute penniless one’ or in a similar box. Make genuine friends.

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2021 19:37

Bloody hell @Christmasadverthell, little did you know your thread would end up as handbags at dawn.

BlueCherryBlossom · 05/11/2021 19:37

Sorry, I was referring to people I actually know.

Admittedly I'm not friends with many celebs, who (let's be honest) are the product placement vehicles through which aspirational people are inspired to buy nonsense like Chanel handbags. I bet Chanel sends everyone on your list bags all the time.

853ax · 05/11/2021 19:41

Guess issue I'd take out of it is they all have same bags so may not end up being a great friend group if they copying each other will be competitive.

1onway1under12and1over18 · 05/11/2021 19:42

They’ve paid for them on klarna, catalogue payments or credit cards. Classic hire purchase Mercedes on the drive and aldi beans in the cupboard.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 05/11/2021 19:42

@BlueCherryBlossom

I don’t know about the people on the list because I don’t know them. But people I know with “serious money” buy them because they are classics and the amount they cost is nothing to them, and they just shop at these places. It wouldn’t occur to them not to. Some designer stuff is vile, gaudy and awful. A lot of it actually. But a classic flap bag or a birkin for example is a fairly understated and non gaudy example.

Phrowzunn · 05/11/2021 19:44

I have a beautiful Mulberry handbag which I always get lots of lovely comments about but my husband and my sister both saved up and went halves on it for a special birthday and in my every day life Zara is too expensive for me 😂

I don’t think the retailers of Chanel bags would entertain an association with Klarna for a nano second.
