AIBU in thinking it's OK to have the odd glass of wine while pregnant? Maybe 2 very small glasses a week?

Yes = YABU and shouldn't drink that much/anything at all

No= it's fine to have the odd glass

YABU

Can you really not go without??

Elletine · 22/09/2021 21:28

I am choosing not to - but then I don’t see it as a huge sacrifice/ feel like I am missing out, I just see it as a precaution. I’ve got all my life to drink…… what’s 9 months?

I wouldn’t judge you though OP, each to their own Flowers

wavecatcher · 22/09/2021 21:28

Honestly an occasional small drink is fine

StinkingCold · 22/09/2021 21:28

YABU

PurplePizzaCake · 22/09/2021 21:28

I can definitely go without, I probably only drank a total of 3 small glasses in my first pregnancy

I think an occasional glass is fine, but I wouldn't call twice a week occasional.

WoozySnoozy · 22/09/2021 21:29

You need to do your own research on this not just rely on randomers on the internet.

PurplePizzaCake · 22/09/2021 21:31

Sometimes I think it's easier to accept a drink at a social occasion than basically telling people you are pregnant by not drinking

I've done my own research but am also interested in what random people do too

I'd say YABU.

But that's my opinion and I wouldn't touch a drop.

Biscuits1 · 22/09/2021 21:35

I wouldn't drink 2 glasses of wine a week even when I'm not pregnant. I personally don't think you should drink at all as it is just not worth the risk to the baby.

Maybe I should have said 2-3 glasses on a very busy week, but usually maybe 1 drink every 2-3weeks. And when I say small glass I mean 100-125mls

Would you be able to say you are driving? Or accept a drink (then give it to your partner to drink and take their empty glass / accidentally leave it on a table / pretend to drink)?

My friend just had lemonade or cokes at functions before announcing - we had no idea as just assumed it had alcohol in 😂 might help! 😊

Lightswitch123 · 22/09/2021 21:37

sweetieqie · 22/09/2021 21:38

I'll have a drink very rarely with a large meal. But no means a regular thing, I wouldn't be scheduling it on a weekly basis. Why not treat yourself to your favourite soft drink or something instead?

pinkstripeycat · 22/09/2021 21:39

Why so desperate to drink? If you’re out what’s it got to do with anyone else if you don’t drink

bethabean · 22/09/2021 21:39

I'm 22 weeks and have had the occasional glass. By occasional I mean twice in the whole 22 weeks though

abw94 · 22/09/2021 21:40

YABU.

I'm a social drinker so really doesn't bother me if I go months without drinking when not pregnant so to actually choose to drink whilst pregnant baffles me. I don't see the point in it? You can't get drunk and if you had a drink whilst out you would have a lot of glaring eyes.

Zerrin13 · 22/09/2021 21:40

If you fancy a drink then have it. Its your body and your baby and you have to make the decision.
Personally its a no from me. I never touched alcohol when pregnant.

Cotswoldmama · 22/09/2021 21:40

I didn't drink at all. I even had to go on a hen do before I was telling anyone I was pregnant. I managed to offer to drive so I had a reason not to drink.

Indoctro · 22/09/2021 21:41

Personally I don't agree to any alcohol during pregnancy and I certainly didn't have any in my pregnancies

Skinnyankles · 22/09/2021 21:42

There is rapid brain development in pregnancy - alcohol is incredibly toxic during this time. Fetal alcohol syndrome is associated with higher intakes but causes such significant cognitive and developmental harm - I cannot imagine that even a small amount is OK to be honest. Fetal alcohol is difficult to diagnose - so it tends to be severe to be able to easily identify it. We do not really know what the impact of smaller volumes of alcohol.

4 small glasses in one week is thought to be the threshold - are you sure your 2 home glasses do not equate to this?

I advise pregnant women not to drink at all in pregnancy.

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/09/2021 21:43

YANBU because at the end of the day it's your decision.

That said, it didn't sit right with me to have any once I knew I was pregnant. It just seems like such an easy thing to avoid.

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/09/2021 21:44

Also having a drink when pregnant because of what other people might think or because of social pressure is probably the worst excuse for it.

RosiePosieDozy · 22/09/2021 21:45

No way would I touch a drop while pregnant. It's just not worth it IMO. I love a glass of wine but as a pp said, I have my whole life for that. 9 months without is not a big thing.
