They make brilliant frittata!

GrealishHairband · 08/09/2021 19:40

Bloody love tinned potatoes. Or ‘pebbles’ as they were known in my childhood home. Haven’t had them in years. DH turns his nose up when I rave about them. Pebbles, tinned carrots and tinned peas. Bloody luvverly.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 19:40

Little one gets Maris piper taste the difference, and mummy gets 40p tinned potatoes 😂

2 tins sliced and fried with onions, whack in a tin of chopped corned beef, serve with a fried egg, baked beans and think slices of bread and butter. A staple camping meal for our family

Seventimesaday · 08/09/2021 19:41

Like them roasted, in a Spanish Omelette, a potato salad, or mashed with a tonne of real butter.
Not too keen on them just on their own.
We always have an emergency tin in the cupboard.

CarrotSticks23 · 08/09/2021 19:41

They are so good sliced and fried! Delicious

ButForTheGrace · 08/09/2021 19:41

Oh and brown sauce

RobinPenguins · 08/09/2021 19:41

Ooh I still have some in the garage from last year’s pre covid panic buying. Might make saag aloo.

IngridTails · 08/09/2021 19:42

Brilliant store cupboard staple.

I use in corned beef hash with tinned peas and carrots when camping. I do push the boat out and fry an onion off too.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 19:43

I'm going to have to tried sliced and fried in butter.

@AuntLydiasNewHairdo

Do M&S still do that chicken in white sauce? Fond memories but for the life of me I can't remember what my mother did with it.
As kids, we used to have them in vol au vents (posh we were Grin ).

I bought some in lockdown and it was horrible - smelt like dog food

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2021 19:44

I only like them fried, but they are glorious like that. My son found a packet of Idohoan instant mash that I'd meant to put in the food bank and that is really, really nice, esp the cheese one

SoundAndVisions · 08/09/2021 19:47

To those that roast them, how long do they take?

Impatientwino · 08/09/2021 19:48

We like them in curries too. They stay firm and don't disintegrate into the sauce.

Re M&S chicken in white sauce in a tin yes they still do it. I fry leeks and carrots with fresh thyme, crumble over a chicken stock cube and then add in two tins of the chicken in sauce. Give it a stir and warm through a little, pop into a pie dish and top with ready rolled puff pastry.

It cooks down really nicely in the oven and is delicious.

Fantastic for quick Spanish omelettes also for emulsifying aioli. Bloody handy things to have in the pantry but many are too snobbish to accept this.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 19:49

I roasted them for 20 minutes and they were deliciously crispy and fluffy.

Never mind tinned potatoes, I have been fantasising about tinned cream. Smile Anyone remember that?

BottomPinchingAunt · 08/09/2021 19:50

@fairgame84

Love them. We used to eat them at my grandma's as kids so I'm fond of them. My grandma was partial to tinned food.
Was your Grandma my Grandma *@fairgame84* Grin Mine though tinned food was the height of elegance! Many a happy meal of tinned corned beef, tinned potatoes and tinned peas followed by tinned fruit, jelly and tinned custard.

My thoughts too.. I'm not ashamed to say I have 10 tins in my pantry cupboard 🤣

They're weird. They've got a funny waxy/rubbery texture and taste 'fizzy' in a way I can't explain, somehow. They're a real taste of my childhood but not one I want to revisit. Ditto strange overly sweet, mushy tinned carrots.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 19:51

My dad used to love tinned chilli con carne too 😊

Tangledtresses · 08/09/2021 19:51

They are fantastic in curry especially sag alloo they don't break up

swampytiggaa · 08/09/2021 19:51

I used to love them! Caravan holidays always involved a fray bentos pie tinned potatoes and tinned marrowfat peas 😋 my mom used to add a couple of cans of food a week to the shopping so we could take it with us 💕

notanotherjacketpotato · 08/09/2021 19:51

Are they not too wet to roast? Kitchen towel?

CottageOnTheHill · 08/09/2021 19:52

I use them for roasting when it’s just me for dinner. I love them. I also buy the McCain frozen baked potatoes for quickness. I rarely admit this as I was banned from another forum for instigating potatogate over the frozen baked ones 😂
