I put them in the slow cooker when I make stews as they are softer than normal potatoes. Also really handy and nice to have with peas and a tin of stewing steak or chicken in white sauce!

[quote Yellownotblue]I see your tinned potatoes, and I raise you rice in a can! A staple of my childhood. I cringe when I think about it now, but used to love it as a child.

We eat rice pudding from cans, is it much different really?

VestaTilley · 10/09/2021 14:32

No. We used to eat a fair bit of tinned veg growing up; I always thought tinned potatoes had a very odd taste...

@namesnamesnamesnames

I love tinned rice pudding. I truly am a child of the 80s 😂.

Tinned fruit cocktail anyone? I'd forgotten about it until I bought some for my lockdown stash (2 weeks of tinned food in case we all had to isolate at the same time) and rediscovered how nice it is.

Yup I buy that too! My youngest loves it.

@Nayday
Haha the good old days - she also took tinned hamburgers in gravy.. I don't even think we visited a French supermarket whilst we we there 😂😂😂😂

Bollindger · 10/09/2021 19:59

Cold tinned rice pudding with milk, mix and eat, oh yummy,

SolitaryTree · 10/09/2021 20:42

@Yellownotblue there’s a YouTube called atomic shrimp who has a few videos on “weird things in a can” or something similar. I expect some could definitely beat the rice in a can!

Feedingthebirds1 · 10/09/2021 20:48

I've seen sprouts in a can (in B&M).

@Slothkin

I absolutely love them - lovely memories of caravan holidays when I was little! See also M&S chicken in white sauce in a tin.
Slothkin me tooooo! In a lay-by on the way to Scotland. Tinned potatoes, tinned chunky chicken and tinned peas. Fabulous!
BobISMyUncle · 11/09/2021 03:45

I love them, eat them straight out of the tin! How minging is that? I do, however, have to rinse them under a running tap first, they are so salty. I think this is my guilty pleasure. That, and pink grapefruit chunks, straight out of the tin.
Sorry.

BobISMyUncle · 11/09/2021 03:48

OH! And Forsyte Pease Pudding! I usually put it in my lamb stew, but actually, (confession) only about half a can goes into the stew. Hence, I always have to buy at least 3 cans of the stuff. Bugger.

Piglet89 · 11/09/2021 06:24

As an Irish person, tinned potatoes are an actual racist statement.

Okbutnotgreat · 11/09/2021 08:29

Tinned potatoes are brilliant roasted or in a stew. Camping in the 80s meant dinner every night was a big tin of stewed steak, tinned potatoes and baked beans or tinned carrots. One pot over a campfire and just delicious.

Tinned veg are pretty nutritious I think and a very useful thing to have in the cupboard. We also loved tinned peach slices, those little orange segments and tinned rice pudding. We use tinned soup and beans regularly anyway, always been a bit warier of tinned meat (unless camping) but don’t really have a good reason for this.

Racist 🤣
LoisLane66 · 11/09/2021 10:28

I used to buy them in QuickSave. Not any more.

LoisLane66 · 11/09/2021 10:29

Actually, Kwiksave

LoisLane66 · 11/09/2021 10:32

I loved tinned apple puree. They were normal tins the same size as soup cans. Used to have it with tinned Devon custard. Delish.

KissedintheDark · 11/09/2021 13:04

I would have taken up camping if I'd known the food was this good. Grin

HeronLanyon · 11/09/2021 13:10

My childhood camping days (months every summer through Europe 60s and 70s) were full of powdered milk. Long life milk and us tinned DInty Moore beef stew. Thank god when we got to Italy and Greece and turkey and ate local food !

howdidigettobe50something · 11/09/2021 23:03

Loving this thread and reminiscing about my own childhood camping days with similar offerings. Looked for tinned potatoes and cream today but no luck. I'll try a bigger supermarket tomorrow. My daughter's wondered what an earth I was talking about when I told them what I was trying to find... And someone's just mentioned powdered milk! I remember Marvel from my SW days!

Pebbledashery · 11/09/2021 23:44

You can't beat most tinned foods. I have a large stock in case that was accumulated over lock down

josbd · 13/09/2021 00:46

YAK!!!!!

HangingOver · 13/09/2021 00:52

I adore them. Don't microwave them though, the feckers can explode even AFTER you've taken them out nearly hit me in the eye
