@Firstdateshotel

My dad used to love tinned chilli con carne too 😊
We used to have the all day breakfast in a can. You can still buy it. I’m partial to fried spam sandwiches.
nervousseacreature · 08/09/2021 19:53

Aww tinned potatoes, carrots and garden peas. Childhood caravan memories! I’d still eat them!!

Wrenna · 08/09/2021 19:53

I love them!

swampytiggaa · 08/09/2021 19:54

@CottageOnTheHill

I use them for roasting when it’s just me for dinner. I love them. I also buy the McCain frozen baked potatoes for quickness. I rarely admit this as I was banned from another forum for instigating potatogate over the frozen baked ones 😂
I buy these. Saves waste. Tbh I tend to bung them in the oven anyway.
Wilkolampshade · 08/09/2021 19:54

@ButForTheGrace I have a horror of tinned food as my gran had a corner shop full of it and it's all we ever seemed to get... but my god, that sounds fuckin' delicious! Smile

Hopeisnotastrategy · 08/09/2021 19:54

Tinned potatoes are good waxy, firm potatoes, ideal for stretching good ready made dauphinoise or Bratkartoffeln. Tesco Finest Dauphinoise are good, pop them into an ovenproof dish and double them up and cook them a bit slower and you can pass them off as home made. Don't buy M&S, dauphinoise they don't use waxy potatoes and the mouthfeel is too soft.

Home Bargains do very good Bratkartoffeln at the bargain price of 89p. Get the authentic ones with bacon, delicious with so many things.

AWellReadWoman · 08/09/2021 19:54

I use them in Thai Massaman curry and they work really well. Much quicker for a mid week meal

KhoshkaKatya · 08/09/2021 19:58

@Davros I do low FODMAP and I have them with no consequence. So unless you know you have particular problems with resistant starch they can be fine.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 19:58

They are a great staple for a week day evening meal. So quick and delicious. Low calorie too.. A tin was 106 calories!

@CMOTDibbler

I only like them fried, but they are glorious like that. My son found a packet of Idohoan instant mash that I'd meant to put in the food bank and that is really, really nice, esp the cheese one
I got some of that Idaho butter instant mash over lockdown too. Used it for sausages and mash and was very pleasantly surprised - the family didn't even notice! Nothing like the Smash of old.

Back to the tinned potatoes though - I'm never without one in the cupboard. They are brilliant with tinned salmon for salmon fishcakes. Also use sliced in Spanish omelette, and as a bulk in curries and stews. Also a good way of speeding up sautéed potatoes - just slice and fry. Must admit I haven't tried roasted, seems like a challenge for the weekend.

My new discovery is roasted gnocchi - crunchy, chewy divine-ness!

Is a no from me.

knittingaddict · 08/09/2021 20:02

Yuck.

Horrible memories of my childhood have just resurfaced. They are vile, weird things with no discernable connection to an actual potato.

knittingaddict · 08/09/2021 20:05

@sluj

Never mind tinned potatoes, I have been fantasising about tinned cream. Smile Anyone remember that?
Sterilised cream? Yes I remember that. Again nothing like actual cream, but quite nice in it's own right.
tintodeverano2 · 08/09/2021 20:05

LOVE tinned potatoes! They are excellent on curries or stew. Just don't try to cook them in the microwave as they explode.

bg21 · 08/09/2021 20:05

tinned potatos and fanny's faggots lol always make extra gravy though 👌

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2021 20:05

They are horrible!

SantanaBinLorry · 08/09/2021 20:06

I love a tinned spud.
Great for curries, frying and mashing up for fish cakes as mentioned.

I do this recipe with tinned spuds too. Its delish and dead easy.

@pigsDOfly

Really? Well they must have changed somewhat since I last had them, admittedly, some years ago.

Tasteless and watery, with an odd sort of texture somewhere between soggy and hard - difficult to explain, but not a good thing - and bearing absolutely no relationship to 'real' potatoes.

Thank you. That's exactly how I would describe them too.
justthecat · 08/09/2021 20:08

No . My ds raves about them In air fryer still meh

ablutiions · 08/09/2021 20:09

@sluj ooh I loved tinned cream.
The thick whooped stuff with a slightly metallic taste (yum)
Or what we called 'moving cream' which was evaporated milk. Wondrous with jelly. It apple crumble. Or off a spoon straight out of the tin (which had 2 holes in it so it could pour)

Marvellous

Chikapu · 08/09/2021 20:09

Some things just shouldn't come in a tin, potatoes are one of those things.

knittingaddict · 08/09/2021 20:09

@Jaffacakeinmypocket

I love them but don't know anyone else that thinks they are delicious 😂 I still miss Heinz tinned potato salad and vegetable salad from the late 70s/early 80s
That reminds me, can you still buy sandwich spread? I loved that as a child.
Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 20:10

Evaporated milk in tea brings me back to my childhood...

Spaceprincess · 08/09/2021 20:13

Yes in curry and roasted.
We have them camping with onions and corned beef or sausages all fried together.
They make excellent bombay potatoes too.
We also had tinned chicken supreme, think my mum served it with a circle of rice.

Whywonttheyhelpme · 08/09/2021 20:15

Tinned potatoes! These vile, rock hard, tasteless bullets should only be consumed in the case of a zombie apocalypse.

Step away from the spuds.
