My DH loved them chopped up small, with tinned carrots and frozen peas and a tin of Minced beef in gravy (M&S is nice) In to a Pyrex and in a slowish oven for 40mins or so…. Bloody lovely, I must admit… even better over a couple of Yorkie puds
He ate a lot of it before we met!

Looubylou · 08/09/2021 20:16

I can eat them but wouldn't inflict them on anyone else.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/09/2021 20:16

They're great in a frittata.

Watchingyouwazowski · 08/09/2021 20:19

My memory of them is also very ropey. @pigsDOfly described it perfectly.
I haven’t tried them for many years but all these recommendations are making me think it’s time to revisit them!

OllyBJolly · 08/09/2021 20:19

Completely dropped off my radar! That’s my mission for the weekend - seek out tinned tattles. Yum!

Comedycook · 08/09/2021 20:20

Odd texture. You can make them palatable though

EmoIsntDead · 08/09/2021 20:21

@ButForTheGrace

2 tins sliced and fried with onions, whack in a tin of chopped corned beef, serve with a fried egg, baked beans and think slices of bread and butter. A staple camping meal for our family
Oh god, that sounds amazing
Anycolourwilldo · 08/09/2021 20:22

Yesssssss!!!! Have you tried roasting them? Delicious

godmum56 · 08/09/2021 20:23

@Inthesameboatatmo

Nope and nope 🤢🤮
^^ this
GlitchStitch · 08/09/2021 20:23

I love them roasted but still have quite a big scar on my arm from when one exploded on me when I took the roasting tray out of the oven, about 20 years ago!

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 20:25

I'll be buying tinned potatoes for many years to come.

In the Mortimer and Whitehouse fishing series, Bob Mortimer does the outdoor cooking, and calls them "trapped potatoes".

swampytiggaa · 08/09/2021 20:26

@knittingaddict you can still get sandwich spread 😊 it’s by the jars of meat spreads usually.

I’m a picker for home delivery so I generally know what’s in stock

Martinisarebetterdirty · 08/09/2021 20:28

I love them - sliced and fried in butter. Also love M&S chicken in white sauce, served with rice and frozen peas, smothered in soy sauce - a lovely quick and easy meal.

SpeakingFranglais · 08/09/2021 20:29

Food of my childhood. Drain them and fry them in a little oil, eat between white bread with salt, vinegar and ketchup.

Blackberrybunnet · 08/09/2021 20:30

They are THE BEST for making potato salad, and also Spanish omelette (aka) tortilla . They never fall apart.

Newchances · 08/09/2021 20:30

I didn't know these were a thing at all! I'm never without a bag of potatoes though so wouldn't need them...interesting if I was going caravaning though...are they like baby boil size ?

DukeOfEarlGrey · 08/09/2021 20:31

I had forgotten all about them but you are right OP! Best eaten straight from the tin with a fork, dunked in mayo on the way to one’s gob.

DroopyClematis · 08/09/2021 20:31

@AuntLydiasNewHairdo

Do M&S still do that chicken in white sauce? Fond memories but for the life of me I can't remember what my mother did with it.
Yes they do... amazing in vol-au-vents.
DukeOfEarlGrey · 08/09/2021 20:31

PS They were a student staple for me if not already apparent from serving suggestion.

Itschocolatehonest · 08/09/2021 20:33

My mum would make gammon/bacon & tinned potatoes with peas & mint sauce, then she would put the ‘goodness’ (which was really the badness on them). The goodness is some of the oil from the pan with the gammon bits in it. Delish Smile

RazorSharp · 08/09/2021 20:35

Not for me!

SpeakingFranglais · 08/09/2021 20:35

@sluj

Never mind tinned potatoes, I have been fantasising about tinned cream. Smile Anyone remember that?
God yes, Nestle sterilised cream in a can. I can visualise the taste immediately, it was delicious, blue label with strawberries and cream on the front.
ODFOx · 08/09/2021 20:35

Drained, sliced up and fried with onion until they've gone crispy, then add corned beef, turning until it starts to brown, served in heaps, topped with a fried egg and a splash of Worcester sauce.? ....Never tried it.......except on every camping trip in the last 10 years! Food heaven!

Moonwatcher1234 · 08/09/2021 20:35

@Mollypolly2610

Use them in both Indian and Thai curries.
Please don’t ruin a good curry with these!
