AIBU to not want a hairdresser to massage my head?

I go to the hair dresser to have my hair washed cut blowdried and occasionally coloured. By a trained professional.

I go to a trained masseuse for a massage

WHYYYYY does almost every hairdresser (or training assistant…. or whoever washes my hair) now have to massage my head, without asking, when they are conditioning my hair? And why is it up to me to say ‘please don’t’ when they start…. Or to preempt it when I don’t know for absolute certain that they are going to do it and feel really awkward? I really dislike telling people I don’t like what they are doing. Couldn’t they just ask?? Like opt in instead of opt out?

I dislike it so much. The sensation, the noise of my wet hair being massaged… urrrrgh! I don’t ask for it. I don’t think they are trained in it. It’s not pleasant in any way.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

YANBU. Hate the sensation.

TenThousandSpoons · 03/09/2021 21:41

YABU

TooYoungToNotice · 03/09/2021 21:42

I also hate it!

Fucket · 03/09/2021 21:42

Nope I hate it too.

namemybabyplease · 03/09/2021 21:42

YABU - it's the best part of the haircut and should last longer!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 03/09/2021 21:43

I have rarely had people just start, they almost always ask.

But YANBU to find it gross and weird. I hate it.

RampantIvy · 03/09/2021 21:43

I wish my hairdresser would massage my head.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/09/2021 21:43

oooh i absolutely bloody love it.
I feel annoyed if they skip over it or rush it.

but I do see your point-maybe they should ask? it is a very personal preference-even if you want a light touch or a firm one-
or is it just how they do the conditioner so it's all rubbed in?

UnfinishedBunting · 03/09/2021 21:43

I simultaneously dislike and like it 😄.

Fairyfalls · 03/09/2021 21:44

It's so relaxing.

QueenofDestruction · 03/09/2021 21:45

I hate it, I don't like being touched more than necessary.

simultaneously dislike and like it

Haha me too!

nzeire · 03/09/2021 21:48

Same! Yuk! I ask them not to. But sometimes when I’m not feeling brave or have forgotten I have to angrily sit through it :)

Bethany7 · 03/09/2021 21:48

I love it so much! However I totally see your point and they should ask. I know my mum doesn't like it either.

On a separate note, perhaps I need go start a thread on this (?!) but I love having my hair played with and genuinely wish I could pay someone to play with my hair! I know that will sound weird to many. I have had a head massage a couple of times but it's not the same as having your hair played with. Unfortunately my little girl gets bored v quickly when playing with my hair!

annacondom · 03/09/2021 21:49

Nope. I also hate it. The worst one was from a junior who was really tense and pressed really hard, presumably bc that's what she thought was required. I told my hairdresser I get migraines (which I do, but it was still an excuse) and therefore my head's a bit sensitive, so she knows to skip the massage. If anyone else washes my hair I hate having to tell them.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 03/09/2021 21:49

YANBU, this is grim and icky, I wish they wouldn’t put you in the position of having to say I’d prefer you not to massage my head - as if it’s somehow normal to do this! Cringe.

Shirleyphallus · 03/09/2021 21:50

I had my hair done last week and it was like the assistant was trying to strip an antique sideboard with the amount of force she put in. Not relaxing.

anyoldname76 · 03/09/2021 21:51

Most of them don't massage properly anyway, I hate it, part of the reason I rarely go to the hairdresser's now

ScrambledSmegs · 03/09/2021 21:51

I hate people touching my scalp so for that yanbu.

But most people who've washed my hair when I go for a cut tend to ask first.

LadyCluck · 03/09/2021 21:51

I love it. Grin

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 03/09/2021 21:51

I’ve never been asked first, they always just dive on in without a by-your-leave.

HalloHello · 03/09/2021 21:51

I think they do it to let your conditioner sit for a minute and YABU, I love it 😂

mygenericusername · 03/09/2021 21:52

My hairdresser comes to my house because I can’t stand the salon experience. I wash my foils out in the kitchen sink.

I’ve stopped having facials as -a face massage is suddenly included.

Blueeilidh · 03/09/2021 21:52

Yanbu

ScrambledSmegs · 03/09/2021 21:53

I think it's supposed to help with scalp health though? I use a scalp massager thingy when I wash my hair for that purpose. Feels great and I don't even have to touch my own head Grin
