You can be pleased with whatever you like, why do you need to ask if it's unreasonable?

Kithic · 01/09/2021 13:34

what was it about?

Kithic · 01/09/2021 13:35

www.theguardian.com/media/2021/sep/01/ofcom-clears-piers-morgan-over-meghan-good-morning-britain-comments

The media watchdog has ruled that Piers Morgan’s criticism of the Duchess of Sussex on ITV’s Good Morning Britain did not breach the broadcasting code despite a record number of complaints about his comments.

Morgan, who quit the show after his comments produced an on-air row with another presenter, described Ofcom’s ruling as a “resounding victory” and a blow to “cancel culture”.

In a 97-page ruling, the regulator found that Morgan’s remarks were “potentially harmful and offensive” but were allowable because the code allows freedom of expression.

Following Meghan and Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Morgan questioned the truthfulness of duchess’s account of breakdown of her mental health at the start of her marriage.

“Who did you go to?” he said. “What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”

seaandsandcastles · 01/09/2021 13:36

YANBU. Free speech is important.

This whole cancel culture has gone too far but hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 01/09/2021 13:43

I seriously don't understand why Piers is so triggered by Meghan Confused

TheFairPrincess · 01/09/2021 13:48

Yay I guess

He’s not “triggered” he’s just not putting up with her bullshit.
Mrgrinch · 01/09/2021 13:51

I hope he goes back to GMB, I haven't watched a single episode since he left.

Lockheart · 01/09/2021 13:52

@Mrgrinch

I am sure they are devastated.
IntermittentParps · 01/09/2021 13:54

I loathe the man, but I cannot (much as I want to) disagree with the decision or the reasons given for it.

I think basically he thought he and MM were best buddies and she thought they were pleasant-ish acquaintances. When she 'dumped' him (or more likely just gently let the acquaintance-ship slide), he took against it. That's why he's so quick to jump on her now.
Plus of course he seems to generally enjoy publicly criticising people who are any combination of young, black and female.

Unfashionable · 01/09/2021 13:55

I’m no fan of either Morgan or Markle, and as a republican I’m all in favour of criticising the monarchy.

The Ofcom ruling is correct. In a free society, Morgan can call Markle a liar if he wishes, and she can sue him if she considers what he says to be defamatory.

I'm pleased, the erosion of freedom of speech and the cancel culture is terrifying

They were friends at one point, then after a night out, for unknown reasons, she declined to see him again. And ever since then, he's been gunning for her every chance he gets.

Make what you will of that.

Mrgrinch · 01/09/2021 13:57

@Lockheart did I say anyone should care? I said I'd like him back on it because he was the reason I watched it. Jesus Christ.

Lollypop701 · 01/09/2021 13:59

@DrSbaitso
😂 exactly!

AlternativePerspective · 01/09/2021 14:00

I wonder what his wife thinks of him being so obsessed with the fact another woman didn’t want to see him any more.

Freedom of speech is not being eroded. The government cannot persecute you for holding opinions.

Piers being fired from a TV show is not an erosion of freedom of speech because only the government can erode freedom of speech. Not a TV company.

People don't understand what freedom of speech / expression means. It's not that you can say whatever you want and no-one can touch you. It's that the government can't throw you in jail for holding opinions except where necessary (e.g. if you're trying to drum up support for terrorist groups).

www.amnesty.org.uk/free-speech-freedom-expression-human-right

Piers never shuts up about MM and so far he's not in prison. His freedom of speech is not being restricted.

If he was being censored by the government, you might have a point.

You understand he won, right?

In what way has his freedom of speech been eroded?

He. Was. Cleared.

He continues to spout his opinions in publications and on twitter. He continues to make his living from expressing his opinion. He has not been ‘cancelled’.

He. Was. Cleared.

So tired of hearing nonsense about ‘cancel culture’ from people who cannot grasp that freedom to speak does not mean the freedom to speak without criticism and that it is normal to be held accountable in one’s workplace. These are not difficult concepts.

He. Was. Cleared.

Do we need to say it again for the morons who use terms like ‘woke’?

MaMelon · 01/09/2021 14:07

YANBU

He’s fully entitled to express an opinion that, given some of the plasticine nature of some of her claims, doesn’t seem too off.

IntermittentParps · 01/09/2021 14:07

I suspect his wife is a twunt too. You'd have to be, surely?

Samcro · 01/09/2021 14:07

that is a shame, the man is a creep.

Iwanttobeapaperbackwriter · 01/09/2021 14:16

MissTrip82

Wtf? I get he was cleared. I'm pleased. I dislike him and do not agree with anything he says. But you are delusion if you think that our right to express an opinion isn't being curtailed and that cancel culture isn't a thing.

Abouttimemum · 01/09/2021 14:18

I’m pleased with the decision. I don’t like him but unfortunately agree with many of his opinions Confused

Indeed.

We know that Markle told at least one blatant lie during her interview with Oprah when she claimed that she & Harry got married before the ceremony. Given that we know that statement was false, it is entirely reasonable for Morgan, or anyone else, to question the rest of her claims.
