Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

(I'm still refusing to fight this proxy war Grin)

Snailhaterz2 · 27/08/2021 19:02

I'm an old fashioned feminist, and could easily be described as a Terf.
I also bloody love Joe Lycett on Sewing Bee. It's a lovely programme, where he is nothing other than supportive of all the participants. He also does some quite interesting stuff in Joe Lycett's got your back, which is basically a consumer rights programme. I'm totally against people like JK Rowling being "cancelled" as Terfs for spurious reasons, and therefore its only fair that people like Joe Lycett are treated similarly.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 27/08/2021 19:02

Totally agree OP. Sadly misogynists get away with it because society hates women generally.

Theunamedcat · 27/08/2021 19:02

If a member of the public wants a job and their background check reveals these kind of tweets in some cases they won't get the job even if they are 10 years ago

It wouldn't be tolerated if he were a woman either

MyPatronusIsACat · 27/08/2021 19:03

@rumpelrumpel

For everyone saying rape and battery type jokes were acceptable ten years ago. They really weren’t! How scummy do you have to be to find this sort of thing funny?

This. ^

Why are people acting like this was 100 years ago? It was 2011 FFS. Just 10 years ago. Stop minimising what he said, acting like it was nothing, and saying 'but it was sooooo long ago.' Hmm (It wasn't!)

If this had been Jim Davidson who'd said this, the people defending Joe Lycett would be calling for him to be banned off TV! Such hypocrisy.

I can't stand Joe Lycett anyway. He's irksome, and about as funny as piles. I hope he is booted off the show tbh.

Samcro · 27/08/2021 19:03

I like him
At least he is isn't a disablist twunt like frankie boil or gervais

MyPatronusIsACat · 27/08/2021 19:03

@hocusspocuss

Well this went down like a damp squib didn't it, OP? Oh well, try someone else next Friday.
44% of nearly people agree with the OP. (at the moment...) That's quite a lot. You're going on as if there are 99% of people against her!
Melroses · 27/08/2021 19:04

I haven't watched it for ages as he spoils it for me and it all looks like a presentation set-up these days.

I wish they could find someone interested in sewing.

dottyshihtzu · 27/08/2021 19:04

The band who follow everything the self appointed king of the terfs says. They follow the script to the letter and it's tedious

Yes, because women can't possibly think for themselves and draw their own conclusions, can they? Must be a man pulling their strings 🙄

Then again, you're using a misogynistic slur associated with death and rape threats, so your low opinion of women is hardly surprising.

hocusspocuss · 27/08/2021 19:05

It's not Brexit @MyPatronusIsACat - the numbers mean fuck all

Clymene · 27/08/2021 19:06

Oh women are fair game! Laughing about fat bitches getting raped is HILARIOUS!

I used to like him. Now he's just like any other tedious women hating gay man.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:07

Well, yes. “But why would any women have a problem with jokes about rape and punching women and laughing at their saggy genitals? It is a total mystery to me. They must have been directed to do it by a man I don’t like, it is the only possible explanation!”

Honestly. Have a think about it.

The voting means fuck all? Well, that's clearly nonsense, so I won't even bother to argue 🙄
owlbethere · 27/08/2021 19:07

Joe lycett is amazing. The end.

Catsrus · 27/08/2021 19:10

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

He’s the main reason I don’t watch Sewing Bee any more, though I can’t honestly say I knew about this.
I tape it just so I can fast forward through his bits. Same with Bake off these days - I just watch for the baking or sewing, I'm not interested in the egocentric ramblings of JL or the GBBO presenters.
GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:11

You can think someone is funny and talented and still acknowledge that what they said was shitty and awful and says a fair bit about them as a person. Even if you think he’s on your side about something else!

Really if you find yourself saying things like “he was only 23, thats’s practically a child” or “but it was 2011, we were all making ten rape jokes before breakfast by then” you may want to have a word with yourself about your expectations of men in general, because they seem a bit low.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 19:13

He’s a comedian. They tell jokes. Sometimes the jokes are offensive. Most of the time that’s ok as we know that because it is a joke it is not to be taken seriously.

The worst thing for a joke is for it to be unfunny, not for it to be offensive. You will never get 100% of people laughing at the same joke. So at all times someone will say “I didn’t find it funny, so therefore the joke shouldn’t have been told.”

Sometimes jokes are offensive. We need to come to terms with that.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:14

Easy on the ‘we’ there. I’d rather not be on the Rehabilitate Poor Cancelled Bernard Manning train, myself.

Tulipomania · 27/08/2021 19:14

I found Les Dawson much more offensive, actually.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 19:19

Yes sometimes jokes are offensive. But still some are considered generally over the line.

So it's all or nothing surely? Jokes that some groups find really iffy being ok but not others groups happens and with anything it's often jokes about women etc that are somehow ok.

In society generally this is true as well. Sexist jokes are up on walls in pubs, comments by drinkers etc. No probs. That is not true of other groups in general.

chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:20

This is disappointing to see.

I definitely find that even watching things from around ten years ago, some of the jokes feel very dated and you definitely wouldn’t hear them today. That doesn’t mean they were ok then, either, but they were certainly more common and wouldn’t receive the same level of disgust as they rightly do now. Like, it was shit then but I can’t see the inbetweeners not getting a bunch of ofcom complaints and think pieces about how damaging it is if it was made now!

I think he should apologise and donate to a charity which supports survivors of rape and sexual assault, personally. It seems madness to demand he “doesn’t present ANY show” and that his career is essentially ended because of tweets he made ten years ago.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 19:20

You’d have a job. He’s been dead for quite sometime now. Which is kind of the point, times change. I doubt most audiences would find Bernard Manning etc funny these days.

He wouldn’t get booked because he wouldn’t be funny. Not because he is offensive. Also the being dead thing would be an issue too.

chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:20

By that I mean the tweets are disappointing.

aaaaah · 27/08/2021 19:21

@RuggerHug

And the Gl*nnerGirls are out!
? Whats that?
Itreallytiedtheroomtogether · 27/08/2021 19:22

I was just disappointed when I saw his tweet supporting trans people - yes send support, but it is completely disingenuous to frame it the way he did. I do like him on GBSB and think he has a nice manner with the contestants - he doesn't come across as stupid, so I can only assume he is being deliberately obtuse in suggesting GC people see all trans people as a threat. Posting for likes, yawn.

These old tweets are offensive and yes, misogynistic. I don't agree with cancel culture, but it is interesting to note the difference in how misogyny is treated compared to other areas. Women don't count, even to lots of women, sadly.
