Joe Lycett is around my age, and I remember "jokes" like this being common 10 years ago in my circles (mostly university students). See also: "jokes" like "Make me a sandwich" and "get back in the kitchen"

None of my friends make jokes like that any more. They would be horrified to. It was fairly common at the time, even though it was bad taste, even then.

I'm of the opinion he should never have got the job in the first place.
