Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

I can’t stand him. No idea why he is popular.

SusieBob · 27/08/2021 18:06

He's great. If you don't like his work... then don't watch it. All televisions come equipped with buttons to change the channel and/or turn them off.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 27/08/2021 18:07

No he shouldn't be kept on. They're appalling tweets from a grown adult so no excuse, many are recent and the older ones are absolutely not representative of the kind of things posted at the time.

romdowa · 27/08/2021 18:07

Most of these are from 10 years ago 🙄🙄 none of us are the same person that we were in 2011. Digging up crap like this from a decade ago is really scraping the barrel

NiceTwin · 27/08/2021 18:07

He is fab in GBSB, I love his humour.
Just reminded me I wanted to seek out tickets for his next tour.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/08/2021 18:07

He's a gay man who presents the Great British Sewing Bee. There's nothing to say that either of those disgusting comments about rape is to do with women, although I imagine most victims of rape are female.

In this instance, I'd settle for a fulsome apology and a promise to think more carefully about what he tweets in future. I'm not sold on cancel culture.

It is very noticeable, though, that misogyny is not a hate crime in law and old and tasteless tweets when unearthed do not seem to derail a career if they were made by a male. A woman who tweets a carefully considered remark doubting that a person becomes a woman just by saying 'I identify as a woman' can expect to be reported to her employer/professional body/sacked by her literary agent or publisher/deplatformed etc etc. Depressing.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 18:09

Ah come on, it was ten years ago! Who among us wasn’t joking about rape and punching women ten years ago, hey?

…oh, you weren’t? No, me neither. Weird that.

lokomojo · 27/08/2021 18:12

I don't think there's good evidence Joe Lycett hates women. I don't think you've presented any here.

It's not convincing because he's not really a maleovolent personality, is he? He's more gentle jokes about parking and writing letters of complaint.

m0therofdragons · 27/08/2021 18:13

As a victim of rape I’m not offended by his jokes. He didn’t rape me and as far as I’m aware he’s not a rapist, just a comedian who tells jokes that aren’t to everyone’s taste. Are you there new Mary Whitehouse, trying to tell us all what we should and should find funny? No one asked you to!

SushiGo · 27/08/2021 18:18

10 years ago those jokes were totally standard. Shit, but standard.

He doesn't make those kinds of jokes now, so why have a go at him about it? He's obviously already changed.

CorrBlimeyGG · 27/08/2021 18:20

The people hunting down these ten year old posts are anti trans rights, Joe Lycett is being targeted because he is pro trans rights. What do you think of those people OP? People that seek to deny others equal rights do far more harm than someone making stupid jokes.

LolaLouLou · 27/08/2021 18:20

I am not a fan of 'cancelling' people

He seems like a creep though. What nasty things to say

Catcorn · 27/08/2021 18:21

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g
He says he is bisexual not gay.

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2021 18:21

This perfectly reasonable tweet is why people are going after him.

Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/08/2021 18:21

Apols, I remembered wrong. That makes it worse.

I am sorry I don't agree. Those "jokes" were not standard 10 years ago.

Ah well if he’s on Team Good he can say whatever the hell he wants, we don’t need any kind of standards. Next up: why Frankie Boyle is a lovely friendly progressive bloke!

GreyhoundG1rl · 27/08/2021 18:24

These mythical "rights" that are being denied to trans people left, right and centre.

Can anyone list them for me?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/08/2021 18:25

Comedy pushes the boundaries. Sometimes it pushes the boundaries into the totally unfunny. I can't get worked up about this. I think we should focus more on the actual rapists, rather than trying to cancel people's careers.
I feel sorry for comedians - iirc Jimmy Carr said he's already told the joke which will end his career.
People should be allowed to say what they want so long as they aren't seriously calling on their supporters to actually harm people. If his words offend you, don't watch. That's the approach I take with Frankie Boyle and it seems to work.

Next up: why are so many women being angry about a non issue because a disgraced man tells them to be. If the gowl says you should feel threatened by them over there, you should praise him and turn against innocent people. Honestly the script by some here is so obvious.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/08/2021 18:27

@NerrSnerr

Oh, come on. That's a vacuous tweet which completely misrepresents other people's concerns and is also clearly made to win brownie points. Nobody says trans people are all a danger to women. What people do say, with reason, is that self-ID is a gift to sexual predators, who are almost entirely male, and who want access to women only spaces and services.

What people also say is that telling children who don't conform to gender stereotypes that there's something wrong with their bodies that needs fixing medically is wrong.

hocusspocuss · 27/08/2021 18:29

This is yer bog standard Mumsnet smear of a pro trans celebrity.

Those tweets are over ten years old. People grow up.

Person posting this has an agenda.

Charmtaste · 27/08/2021 18:30

If you replace the word woman/lady/bitch in his tweets with any race/religion/sexuality and it would rightly be unforgivable, no matter how long ago but saying these things about women is ok?

@BroccoliFloret

Are you being mysogynist in inferring that sewing is something only women do?
How? Men participate in that show. Loads of people sew etc, they also manage not to make derogatory remarks or "jokes" about men.

Totally agree. It’s very simple @Charmtaste. Give the sewing programme a miss if he offends you.
