Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

@hocusspocuss

Just checking in to see if Joe has been cancelled yet... thought not
No, but over on pigeonsnet it's a different story....
NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 20:22

Well of course he's not been 'canceled'. Why would he be? A few women thinking rape jokes etc are shitty isn't going to even register.

The all rape is funny joke is about a child watching one pigeon rape another? I mean animals aren't people. But certainly ducks gang rape females sometimes killing them. I saw a thing about turtles where it was not unusual for the female to drown. Badgers apparently indulge in incest.

You can't view it through a human lens.

But I'm still not sure why a kid watching a male pigeon attack a female one and saying ho ho if you think about it all rape is funny is you know. Much of a joke.

I can see it others do and that's fine.

For those who don't find it funny then what's the point problem with expressing that? I grew up when TV comedy included sexually harrassing schoolgirls, women realising men could see them with no clothes on etc was mainstream comedy.

Some find it funny some don't.

The prevalence of blokes having jokes where the punchline is women/ girls being hurt etc has been around for as long as I remember.

Loads find it funny. I don't. So what? Both views are expressed. And there will not be agreement.

Par for the course.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 21:29

nicegerbil surprised you like South Park. Which is kind of famous for being offensive to pretty much everyone.

Also your comment on no one is policing humour The thread title is Joe Lycett should not present GBSB. Which suggests some policing of comedy.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:26

If it was offensive to pretty much everyone it wouldn't have been as successful as it was!

It's properly brilliant.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:26

But yes I imagine those who find the 'jokes' posted on this thread funny would not be likely to enjoy South park!

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 22:33

You can’t seriously think South Park didn’t contain offensive humour? I’ve not seen it in years but always found it funny. Earlier you posted this question to me…

And if it was another type of person? A certain race religion etc?

Eric Cartman is a complete arse (and very funny I might add). He makes loads of anti-Semitic comments aimed at his friend Kyle.

I really can’t get my head round you being a fan of South Park whilst loathing Joe Lycett’s old jokes.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:42

Well that's the interesting diversity of humans!

I haven't been keen on JL for ages as I got a vibe off him about women.
Those jokes come as no surprise to me.
He won't be sacked, obv. Because a few women on MN think his jokes about women and rape etc are nasty.

And it's no more complicated than that.

For me, over my life jokes with women being harmed etc as the punchline have been very common and usually told by men. That's something I notice and don't like.

The point about cartman isn't that what he says is funny. The point is that he's a total c*nt. Selfish, cruel, sexist, racist etc etc and he is aok with saying it all. It's a caricature of horrible bastards rolled into one appalling human. Anyone who thinks what he says is supposed to be funny in and of itself is missing the point massively.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:44

Although like the pub landlord who did something similar years ago. There are those who take it at face value and laugh.

The fact that Al Murray got adopted by those it was taking aim at is kind of funny and depressing at the same time!

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:46

I don't loathe them.

They're bog standard blokey jokes at the expense of women that are all over the place.

I mean meh really. I thought he didn't like women much and here we are. But no worse than loads of other men so whatever.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 22:50

So pretty much, you don’t like Joe. So his offensive jokes get criticised.

But you do like South Park, so you are willing to defend their jokes.

For what it’s worth, I also find South Park funny (but I’ll admit it’s been ages since I’ve seen any. Genuinely surprised to see you defend that show.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 22:56

Defend the show? I said why I liked it. What was there to defend against? Has there been some specific criticism from someone who hates it?

And as for the other. Why would I not be keen on him? I don't have a stronger feeling than that. Possibly because I get a vibe off him that he isn't that keen on women? Why else would I not like him?

So someone I like. Erm. Rylan? I can't imagine him making a joke about punching a woman in the stomach. But if he did. You think I'd be hohoho?

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 23:05

Yeah that show had offended lots of people. I’m not one of them. I’m of the view everything is fair game in comedy.

But it’s mocked pretty much every religion under the sun. One of the main characters is openly anti-Semitic. The death of Steve Irwin was dealt with in a not particularly sensitive way.

Just Google it. South Park is quite a controversial program and it has offended people.

This is from Wikipedia
Comedy Central (Netherlands) chose temporarily not to broadcast some scenes from several shows following the November 2015 Paris attacks. While no specifics were given, it included a scene in the 2015 episode "Sponsored Content" where presidential candidate Mr. Garrison states that he knows there is only one way how to deal with Syrian refugees, and the crowd shouts "fuck them all to death"

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 23:14

I watch it I know what it's like.

It's satirical. It's not like your bloke down the pub making jokes about xyz.

I don't get it. If you want to talk about South park that's another thread so more people can join.

You seem to be implying that because I felt that one bloke on telly was iffy about women and then wasn't surprised at the sort of jokes posted

That I'm not allowed to enjoy another program?

Is that what you're getting at?

I also liked brass eye. The film 3 lions is fab. I can't stand Jimmy Carr. When I was a child I liked Ivor the engine. The rocky horror show is a work of genius. The police academy films were shit.

Any analysis on that?

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 23:16

You like South park but similarity simultaneously you're posting to prove it's awful. And tbh you seem to be missing the whole point of the show if you are taking it the way you seem to be!

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 23:18

IF you are saying as you seem to be that you like it.

And you take the content as not satire but straight up.

Then it seems different people take different things from it.

I'm going to call it the Al Murray effect.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 23:27

Sorry gerbil I feel a bit mean saying this because you do seem like a nice person. But you are coming across as a hypocrite.

South Park is satire, Joe Lycette’s jokes are also satire. And both have caused offence.

For you to be fine with South Park making offensive jokes (they are satire and I would defend them). But then criticise Joe for making offensive jokes (also satire) - does come across as hypocritical.

If you don’t like the comedy / comedian. Just don’t watch it.

Anyway I think it’s probably time to draw this to a close. I’m off to bed. Have a nice night.

WeirdCatLady · 17/09/2021 18:17

I've just heard the excellent news that Joe will not be on Sewing Bee next year 👍🏻

Queenoftheashes · 22/06/2022 16:16

OP did you per chance call the police on Joe Lycett recently?
