Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I never knew you could search a person's tweets! Thank you!

dementedma · 27/08/2021 19:23

I find him quite creepy, personally, so not a fan

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:24

I doubt most audiences would find Bernard Manning etc funny these days.

Yeah, I think they might find him a bit racist.

I’m sure he didn’t mean it though it’s only comedy, they were probably only going after him because he supported the RSPB or something.

Clymene · 27/08/2021 19:24

@WhenSheWasBad

I used to like him. Now he's just like any other tedious women hating gay man

He’s a comedian. They tell jokes. Sometimes the jokes are offensive. Most of the time that’s ok as we know that because it is a joke it is not to be taken seriously.

The worst thing for a joke is for it to be unfunny, not for it to be offensive. You will never get 100% of people laughing at the same joke. So at all times someone will say “I didn’t find it funny, so therefore the joke shouldn’t have been told.”

Sometimes jokes are offensive. We need to come to terms with that.

What's funny about rape? What is funny about a man holding a woman down, pulling off her clothing, pushing her legs apart and shoving his erect penis into her when she doesn't want him to?

Can you explain the joke?

How about children being raped? Is that funny too sometimes?

Do tell us a joke! I could do with a laugh Smile

mediciempire · 27/08/2021 19:25

These tweets are awful and it doesn't matter that it was 10 years ago. He was 23 10 years ago aka old enough to know better!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/08/2021 19:25

You need to put in the Twitter handle with @ at the beginning and then whatever word or phrase you are interested in, @aaaaah. Good luck!

chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:25

@Clymene I understand you’re trying to be shocking but your description is actually fairly triggering. Please consider having your comment deleted.

If you're 'triggered', report my post. I'm describing my rape. Not that funny is it? And I wasn't in mortal fear.

What is funny about rape? I'm all ears.

Eralos · 27/08/2021 19:29

It’s satire

mediciempire · 27/08/2021 19:29

When I saw him storm out on Clare Balding's show because she said something that poked a tiny bit of fun at him, it made me realise that he thinks far too much of himself and is (like an awful lot of male comedians) a stroppy dickhead. These tweets have affirmed that for me.

Bawse · 27/08/2021 19:30

I don’t believe this to be misogyny. I’d say I’m pretty sensitive to sexist & misogynistic nuances masked as humour, irony, etc. and I agree that it’s often all too easily brushed aside and trivialised when it’s sexism (as opposed to racism and other forms of prejudice). I personally don’t see it here.

He often jokes about shagging people’s dads too, which, if substituted for mums, could definitely be construed as misogyny. I don’t think he uses a different tone particularly for men and women.

chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:30

I have reported your post. I appreciate that we deal with things differently but it’s affected me.

I am also a survivor and I found it distressing. I don’t understand why you’re being so dismissive towards me. I also in no way insinuated that rape was funny.

SheWoreYellow · 27/08/2021 19:30

But, if he’s joking about him being the rapist (the surprise ‘joke’), then that’s about raping a man, isn’t it? He’s gay. Still horrible, but not misogynistic.

Bawse · 27/08/2021 19:31

?? That was a setup, it was to draw attention to plastic bottling. He filmed behind the scenes throughout, it was all planned.
chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:31

Sorry, that was for @Clymene

VestaTilley · 27/08/2021 19:32

YANBU. He’s vile.

cuparfull · 27/08/2021 19:32

@m0therofdragons

As a victim of rape I’m not offended by his jokes. He didn’t rape me and as far as I’m aware he’s not a rapist, just a comedian who tells jokes that aren’t to everyone’s taste. Are you there new Mary Whitehouse, trying to tell us all what we should and should find funny? No one asked you to!
Hurrah someone who talks sense.....too many folk trying to police our thoughts words and deeds these days to the detriment of our freedoms.
witheringrowan · 27/08/2021 19:33

I enjoy watching him on GBSB, but I struggle to reconcile his persona there with the stuff he posts on social media, which shows a disregard for women's opinions and boundaries around their safety. And he doesn't seem at all open to listening to explanations or experiences of people who don't agree with him. I get the vibe that he likes women to be fun, giggly, gossipy, "fabulous", but doesn't have any time for the messiness of thinking about women's rights and safety or any type of feminism that's not just about a loose idea of empowerment.

He's probably delightful if you avoid any of those types of topics, but then again there'd always be an undercurrent of something nastier.

butterpuffed · 27/08/2021 19:33

@Jemand

It feels deeply unpleasant that someone is trawling 10 year old posts in an effort to cancel him for the crime of having his own opinion on trans issues.
Exactly, it's a pretty weird thing to do , on the hunt till they find something . He won't be the last to be targeted either.
Claypotkitchentable · 27/08/2021 19:34

These are from 2011. I can’t get offended about something someone said when they were a silly lad ten years ago.

His current self doesn’t come across as misogynistic on gbsb at all. I like him and find him funny.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 19:34

Do tell us a joke! I could do with a laugh

I’m not defending an individual joke. Just saying that often comedians jokes are offensive. Especially when read in a somber mood on mumsnet.

Should a comedian’s career be affected because someone trawled through their Twitter feed of the past 10 years?

Your post on rape could be seen as more traumatic than his joke.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:35

He won't be the last to be targeted either.

Oh the poor male comedians, will nobody save them from the terrible fate of having someone screenshot a terrible thing they said in the past? Oh the HORROR, truly it is just like North Korea.

EsmaCannonball · 27/08/2021 19:35

He definitely has a problem with women but he'll be fine because cancel culture has a blind spot when it comes to misogyny and, far from being snowflakes, women become inured to prominent people being misogynistic, sexist and creepy, because if we cancelled them all there would hardly be anyone left. (Anyway, I don't agree with cancelling people, but it would be nice if the media would challenge them on this stuff. There probably won't be many articles or interviews where the likes of J.K. Rowling or Simon Callow aren't associated with bigotry, so why should the likes of Joe Lycett always be treated with kid gloves?)

Clymene · 27/08/2021 19:36

I'm sorry if it's upset you (and that you are also a survivor Thanks ) and it's your prerogative to be upset. But I posted it for a reason. Which is that we now so frightened of talking about the upsetting reality of things like rape that it makes it easier to laugh about them. Because Joe is laughing about the word rape rather than the grubby reality of it.

People need to be shocked. Rape is horrible. It's not horrible because 'it's the last taboo', it's horrible because it's a deeply traumatising dehumanising experience. And men need to understand that.

chalamet · 27/08/2021 19:38

@Clymene of course, what you say is completely true and I really do understand what you’re getting at - I’m sorry, it just really shocked me because I wasn’t expecting it (probably stupid of me considering the subject matter!!).
