Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

I don’t support cancel culture at all.
Those comments are really not remotely funny though.
Plus women who support women keeping single sex provision are not “anti trans” .

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 18:44

He’s just a comedian.

There’s lots of comedian’s I don’t like. I just don’t watch them, easy.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/08/2021 18:45

Being pro women's rights and wanting to protect single sex spaces, doesn't make someone a TERF.
I don't agree with cancel culture, wherever it's coming from. JL might be a dick, but he does have a right to make a living.

playmelikeasymphony · 27/08/2021 18:47

I would agree Joe Lycett shouldn’t be presenting GBSB - Claudia was much better. But I also think ten year old tweets should just be left to the mists of time.

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 27/08/2021 18:48

I’m pretty sure most people without a gleaming halo like yours, OP, possibly said something TEN YEARS AGO that they might not say today.

It’s called growing the fuck up.

Jemand · 27/08/2021 18:48

It feels deeply unpleasant that someone is trawling 10 year old posts in an effort to cancel him for the crime of having his own opinion on trans issues.

@CorrBlimeyGG

The people hunting down these ten year old posts are anti trans rights, Joe Lycett is being targeted because he is pro trans rights. What do you think of those people OP? People that seek to deny others equal rights do far more harm than someone making stupid jokes.
Trans activists are welcome to him. And they can all stop digging up old tweets from people they don't like, because apparently that's how it works now.
aaaaah · 27/08/2021 18:51

Why did someone trawl through all his tweets to find them? Must have taken ages.

Agreed on all points. I'm very tired of being told those of us with concerns about women's rights and safeguarding of children and other vulnerable people are 'anti trans'. For goodness sake, engage with the arguments, don't just start flinging about the T* slur, which I thought was banned on Mumsnet, anyway.

Some of us were banging on about this long before Graham Linehan got involved, so this weird attempt to portray him as our leader is odd too. I admire him, though, make no mistake. He's put his head above the parapet to voice his concerns, which most men and the majority of women haven't, and my god has he paid a price.

hocusspocuss · 27/08/2021 18:52

Well this went down like a damp squib didn't it, OP? Oh well, try someone else next Friday.

rumpelrumpel · 27/08/2021 18:53

I’m disappointed as I liked him!

For everyone saying rape and battery type jokes were acceptable ten years ago. They really weren’t! How scummy do you have to be to find this sort of thing funny?

But to put it in context - he could be seen as enabling / encouraging misogyny whereas I’m more upset and quite triggered by the rapturous welcome Ronaldo is getting at Man U and afaik he’s an actual rapist. Puts me right off (men’s) football.

For anyone with ptsd - even sewing and sport arent safe areas.

Hardly. All you have to do is use a suitable search term.
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/08/2021 18:54

His gardening stories on Instagram are embarrassingly try-hard. He seems to be a good beginner gardener who enjoys his little patch but uses ridiculously offensive misogynist language to describe the flowers he grows, all ‘This tulip SLUT’ and ‘This dirty SLAG’. I’m not convinced he has learned much.

@hocusspocuss

This is yer bog standard Mumsnet smear of a pro trans celebrity.

Those tweets are over ten years old. People grow up.

Person posting this has an agenda.

100% agree with you there, you put it perfectly. I feel like sending GBSB a message of support for him tbqh.
Foxyloxy1plus1 · 27/08/2021 18:56

I preferred Claudia Winkelman on GBSB. I’ve recently rewatched them and the earlier ones were much better with her..

Shouldbedoingsomework · 27/08/2021 18:58

@Charmtaste

If you replace the word woman/lady/bitch in his tweets with any race/religion/sexuality and it would rightly be unforgivable, no matter how long ago but saying these things about women is ok?
It wouldn't be unforgivable, it would be exactly the same - a joke. When comedians make jokes, they are not being serious, ie they don't really mean what they are saying, whether it's about rape or whatever. I would have thought that was obvious, but there you go.
MilduraS · 27/08/2021 18:59

@GreyhoundG1rl

Most of these are from 2011. The world has moved on a lot since then. What on earth does this mean? He was an unpleasant little bollix ten years ago too, so what?
I mean jokes that were acceptable just 10 years ago are career ending these days.
Lordamighty · 27/08/2021 18:59

Digging up old tweets is straight from the TRA handbook but they don’t like it when the same tactics are used against them.
Joe Lycett is a misogynist, there’s plenty of, more recent, evidence.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

He is not gay, I know he was/is bisexual and think he prefers being called pan sexual now.

Tulipomania · 27/08/2021 19:00

I think he's funny.

The point about humour is it pushes our boundaries.

lokomojo · 27/08/2021 19:01

Father Ted is really good though. It's properly funny!
