to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

callingtimethistime · 17/08/2021 16:11

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

Offers over, as in Scotland. Excellent state schools and a really nice area.

I absolutely love living where I am, but I wouldn’t be able to buy a big enough property for £300k.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 17/08/2021 16:20

You could get a one-bed ex council flat here (London) for that.

LookdeepintotheParka · 17/08/2021 16:20

300k would buy a 2 bed house here - probably not family sized. We're just north of Bristol and it's a great place to live - good schools and beautiful countryside to escape into.

Last year 300k would have easily got you a 3 bed family house here but due to people moving out of Bristol cos of high house prices, it's really climbed in value over the last 6 months.

Where in the UK would you consider moving?

jennyt82 · 17/08/2021 16:22

I live in the North East, we have a 5 bedroom detached house with a large extension and double garage which cost us just under 300k

ShinyMe · 17/08/2021 16:22

Rightmove has nothing at all in my postcode area for as much as £300k. If I add a 5 mile radius for a search between £290 and £300k then I get 9 properties, all quite nice looking, all 3-4 bed detached with gardens. This is my favourite.

Cookerhood · 17/08/2021 16:23

South east. A 2 bedroom flat (nice one in nice area) or maybe a terraced house.

lking679 · 17/08/2021 16:24

Rightmove has a feature called “where can I live” you put your details and budget in there and will show you areas you can afford desired house in the UK.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/08/2021 16:24

Mostly 1 bed apartments. A couple of two beds. Where we are (small Home Counties cathedral city) is a lovely place to raise a family, but it's very expensive.

rosesinmygarden · 17/08/2021 16:25

Around my area you'd get a 2 bedroom flat or a small 2 bedroom terraced house for that.

I like where I live but it is expensive and busy. I worry that our children will be priced out of buying if they want to stay in the area.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/08/2021 16:25

In the immediate vicinity of my home (say up to half a mile from my door), 300k would get you one of only 2 properties.

Everything else (inc 3bed semis/4bed detached with garage etc in a nice area) is under 300k - around the 240-280k mark.

If I had 300k to spend I'd move around 10miles and go to the coast. 300k would get me a 3 bed terraced Victorian home with front garden and back yard a 2min walk from the seafront in a cafe/arts cultered northern town.

Bigpinkslippers · 17/08/2021 16:26

3 possibly 4 bed detached, definitely a large 3 bed semi in nice village in lancashire PR4 area. 3/4 close secondary schools which are all good.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/08/2021 16:26

nothing in the village where I live, but it would get you a 2 bed flat in a new build development in the next village

InpatientGardener · 17/08/2021 16:26

My house, 3 bed semi no parking, small garden, grotty area. South East of England on the coast. We're moving to rural Wales and I cannot wait. I wouldn't recommend living here, the traffic is insane, pollution disgusting, schools oversubscribed.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/08/2021 16:27

300k would get you one of only 2 properties

Neither of which are for sale I should add. Just that's their value

Neverrains · 17/08/2021 16:27

Well it bought us our house, which is a 4 bed detached, large garden, garage, 3 reception rooms… nice village in the Midlands, good schools etc. Bit dull though.

itsgettingwierd · 17/08/2021 16:28

You'd get a 3 bed semi around here for that price.

Just outside of Portsmouth and pretty much same sort of property for the price.

Nice area to live as very rural inland and coastal too. Great train links and motorway links and some really good secondary's but the usual awful ones in places too.

You can get a reasonable amount for £300k here. This one is in a nice village. I like living here, but it might not be lovely enough if you’re relocating from a big city.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/08/2021 16:28

Sorry, just realised that's a retirement flat!

It would buy you this house in another village near me

QforCucumber · 17/08/2021 16:28

We'd get a forever house, I love living where we are.

Nonicknamesforcatapillars · 17/08/2021 16:29

*lively

LadyCatStark · 17/08/2021 16:29

Our 5 bedroom detached new build with 2 en-suite bathrooms and a dedicated office, only a single garage though much to DH’s chagrin 😂. We’re in the far north west of England and DS attends an incredible grammar school. We’re quite rural though which has its good and bad points; lots of lovely walks with the dog but we have to drive to do anything else.

HelloDulling · 17/08/2021 16:30

Really nearby, it would be a 2 bed flat, but this 4 bed is just five mins down the road. You’d need a few skips though. Brunswick Street, Cardiff

LemonSwan · 17/08/2021 16:30

standard 3 bed semi (2 & 1/2 bedrooms) with an open plan living/ dining extension, drive, medium garden etc. on an untree lined street. Treelined street 350k

The non converted ones go for c. 200-250 depending on road.

Mercurial123 · 17/08/2021 16:30

One bed flat with garden in Brighton.
