to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

A very small 3 bed flat.

ShinyHappySummers · 19/08/2021 06:53

Meant to say 2 bed!

I'm On the border between leeds and Bradford. Beautiful area, miles of rolling fields yet a 10 min drive to the city centre. We love it here. Current home is 3 bed detached 3 bathrooms. Worth around £140k.

You get a lot of house for your money here!

300k would get us a lovely detached 4 bed cottage in the nice village up the road. I would move there if I could.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 19/08/2021 07:35

It seems that a reasonable 3-bed house in many parts of the country is at least a quarter of the price for the same in London.

Is the quality of life in London four times better?

Mumofsend · 19/08/2021 07:46

www.google.com/amp/s/www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/19493278.amp/ you would be short for this

Well easy access to everything incl number of airports, higher number of jobs, main galeries etc probably does count. It's always the cade of capital, and suburbs there, being considerably more expensive than most of the country.

I don't think the quality of life is necessarily better, but the ability to earn is certainly much greater.

Some of my friends who are sucessful at their jobs who work in London are probably easily 4 times as rich as those of us who left!

The most I ever earned was as a 30 year old in a job in the City. I've never earned as much since.

A nice 4 bed detached with garage and big garden. Where I want to live it would get you a shabby 3 bed semi

TheSpanishApartment · 19/08/2021 14:55

It would get you a 2 bed cottage (Bucks village)

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 19/08/2021 14:58

Either a 3 bed end terrace in the rough part of town, or a two bed mid terrace in a nicer part of town.

But if you pay 4x more for your mortgage/rent, that sharply reduces the benefits.

onlychildhamster · 19/08/2021 15:24

@ChocolateDeficitDisorder well your pension would be higher with 4 times the salary. And you can sell the London house when you retire so you get the money back.

Moving to a cheap area doesn't necessarily mean lower expenses. My expenses are similar to my friend in Yorkshire who is renting a 100k house even though I live in zone 3 london and have a £1020 per month mortgage. She and her husband run two cars- costing a total of £500 per month plus is paying off debts from the 9 months she was unemployed during the pandemic- cheapest parts of the UK were worst hit by unemployment during the pandemic. And she was in an office role and has a master's degree. I don't have a car which is easy enough in London and I was able to work remotely during the pandemic- London/SE has highest percentage of remote workers due to larger knowledge economy. So if you move to a place with cheap housing but reduced job opportunities, it's probably a false economy and doesn't mean that you are more likely to be a homeowner esp if you don't have lots of savings.
