to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

Small to medium detached with close neighbours:

I like it here - great facilities, close to Bath and Bristol plus countryside, but it's also the joint cheapest town in the area. Make of that what you will!

Biscoffin · 17/08/2021 16:41

A 4 bed detached.

Where I’m originally from, the area is very nice and has families there. Lots of my old school pals bought in the area as it’s still reasonably priced.

Bigoldhag · 17/08/2021 16:42

Easily a 5 bed with a big garden and space for multiple cars.

If you wanted land, you’d get a couple of acres and a 3 bed no problem.

Bigoldhag · 17/08/2021 16:44

Should note, by contrast, the ‘cheap homes’, eg 2-3 beds first time buyer typically are getting pricier and fewer available.

We don’t have many flats around here.

Peanutsandchilli · 17/08/2021 16:44

£300k would get you a 3 bed detached or a 4 bed semi round us. Possibly a 4 bed detached in a slightly rougher area (not awful though, an area with an excellent primary school but near a few streets of council housing). West Yorkshire, south of Leeds.

Only one house listed on RightMove, others (and not that many) are 1 or 2 bedroom apartments.

Schooly · 17/08/2021 16:44

Nothing at the moment Sad but, nearby, this studio flat:
Fairfield Road, Bow Quarter, London, E3

London is a great place to live with children, even though it gets bad press. And there are better things for your budget in other London areas!

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 17/08/2021 16:45

Absolutely love threads like this. Love two of you posting the same Norfolk cottage.

Fascinating the discrepancy in prices. And I'd never even heard of Biddulph!

This is why I don't get any work done.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/08/2021 16:45

Just noticed that kitchen is 3x6 Shock.

Juno231 · 17/08/2021 16:46

1 bedroom apartment I'm afraid! SW London

Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/08/2021 16:47

Small gripe, but links to places such as Willenshire (made up) with obscure post codes help no-one because I then have to Google where in the hell they are. Is it too much to ask just to put what region of the uk you are posting?

Goodtohear · 17/08/2021 16:47

3-4 bedroomed, well maintained detached houses. Good schools, transport train or buses OK (only every 30 minutes though). Good schools, in fact the local secondary always has a long waiting list and the local sixth form is consistently mentioned as one of the best state a level results in the country. Semi rural villages and a market town. Its 45 minutes to the nearest city though. My teens are happy here, however they don't know any different!
We're in Yorkshire.

SunbathingDragon · 17/08/2021 16:47

Cheapest place for sale in my village is more than double that for a two bedroom bungalow that is optimistically marketed as “a project” which means it really needs to be bulldozed and something else built there.

A nearby 1.25 acre field (no stables) sold for just over £250k a couple of months ago.

bloodywhitecat · 17/08/2021 16:48

Nothing in my exact area as we are very rural and properties don't come up very often but this is in the next village.

Dinosauraddict · 17/08/2021 16:48

I thought this was a really interesting question so just did a Zoopla search for my village with max price of £300k. Only 3 properties on market in that range - biggest is a 2 bed flat on a newish development in a good area.

If I was moving into a random area (so no family ties, job to be close to etc) and arrived round here, I'd buy this, purely for the Ecclesbourne School which is and always has been a wonderful state school.

You'd need a car to live in this village though.

Rolls Royce, Land Registry, Boots, JCB, Experian are some big employers round here, they are still recruiting.

Planttrees · 17/08/2021 16:49

I'm in the South East and there is nothing in my postcode for £300,000. Maybe 10 minutes away in the local town you could find something semi-detached with two bedrooms or a three bedroomed terrace on an estate.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/08/2021 16:50

Had to widen the search to ten miles to get anything, but then got either ex local authority houses in really not nice areas of nearest city, a gorgeous but teeny Victorian terrace 2 bed, and a surprisingly stunning three bedroom flat in a absolutely fabulous and quirky Grade II listed building w the city centre - but it’s it’s right on the main road in to the city and has no outside space whatsoever. Going 15 miles out there’s another surprise, a beautiful apartment in another huge listed building - this one has lots of shared grounds, stunning setting but it’s 2 beds and they’re miniscule and it’s on the edge of a village with barely any public transport links amd you’d definitely need to drive even to get a pint of milk.

Xiaoxiong · 17/08/2021 16:51

For £300k in my postcode you get a 1 bedroom flat in town walking distance to the station and the shops, or a 2 bedroom flat in purpose built blocks that are a bit further away and you have to drive. No houses.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/08/2021 16:51

That’s SE England btw

Rosegoldfan · 17/08/2021 16:51

Barnes Road, Darlington
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/105217061

Ok its 15k over the limit but there are some lovely houses here. Yes I love living here. Good schools, great transport links and country side on your door step.

PhoenixFreesias · 17/08/2021 16:52

Central Edinburgh , £300k would get you an ok two bed flat, or a good one bed. They’d probably be about the same size, 50-60sqm.

Do I like living here? It’s ok. Air BnB has ripped the heart out of it. I’ll probably move in the next year or two.

PeterCorbeau · 17/08/2021 16:53

Five-bed detached. Fairly rural north-east Scotland.
